CONFRONTATIONS.

     THERE JACK GOES AGAIN .    it takes everything for gabe to not roll his eyes .    does jack not GET IT ?    he  --  blackwatch  --  doesn’t have a CHOICE .    surely jack understands that sacrifices have to be made for the GREATER GOOD .   isn’t that the point of his job ,  anyway ?   he should get this .   jack should be on HIS SIDE .    like he always used to be .

     the feeling is heavy in the blackwatch commander’s chest twists and coils inside of him like smoke ,   a horrible thing that makes his fists clench ,  his jaw set .   they shouldn’t be FIGHTING over shit like this .   his wedding band weighs heavy on his finger .   the urge to fidget with it ,   to draw attention to it ,   is hard to fight .   but he resists anyhow .

     something in him aches so terribly .    the same part of him that wants to grab jack ,  tell him he’s sorry ,   press the apologies to his lips in gentle kisses .  BUT THAT’S NOT HIM . he doesn’t do apologies .   he never has .   so what if he misses what they had before all this fighting ?   tough luck .

    ANGELA KNOWS HIM TOO WELL .  or maybe he’s gotten bad at lying .  his teeth grit ,  &&  his fists CLENCH .  this wasn’t the way he expected the conversation to go ,  not at all .  his head is spinning with excuses ,  but he knows it’s NO USE.

JESSE // quick-drawn

     Jesse had grown close with A LOT of people here over the years, but none compared to the bond shared between him and his commanding officer. Years of training, running mission after mission, day in and day out — they’ve watched each other’s backs, been there through each other’s best and WORST — he was Reyes’ RIGHT HAND MAN. Over a decade of camaraderie passed, you’d know the guy well enough to know when he’s BLUFFING…

          His grip subconsciously tenses around the bottle he’d picked up, growing tighter with every word spewed from the other man’s mouth.

                    Same shit, different day.

     And as time went on, it was becoming increasingly more DIFFICULT for Jesse to accept these empty promises.

     “You know I was never one for standin’ ‘round, watchin’ from th’SIDELINES. I ain’t sure how much longer this engine’s gonna run without any OIL…” It was a well known fact on Overwatch grounds that, while the red-tape work done by Blackwatch was dark, perturbing and messy — it was NECESSARY. Without it, they would continue to watch that foundation crumble beneath their feet.

     Jesse finally turns, reapproaching Reyes but not stopping until there’s only about a foot between them, his voice lowering to a whisper, “There’s talk ‘bout another uprising, over in London — we jus’ supposed t’SIT ‘ROUND and wait that out too? We’ve got people over there, Reyes…”

    GABE UNDERSTANDS HOW TIRING IT IS .  being unable to do your job ,  having to stop ,  that feeling of  RESTLESSNESS that quells and doesn’t seem to leave until you feel that sense of accomplishment .  he’s felt it all before ,  he can’t pretend that he hasn’t .   he’s not UPSET with jesse for pushing this  ;  he can’t when he truthfully understands why he feels the way he does .  hell ,  if he was in jesse’s position ,  he’s sure he’d be going CRAZY with cabin fever .

    but it’s hard to admit that jack just isn’t working with him .  gabe kep tFUCKING UP ,  and now his whole team is feeling that loss every single bit .  it sucks ,  and he wishes he could do more ,  but that’s not where his POSITION leaves him .  he sighs .

     an uprising ?  he’s overheard stuff about it from jack . . .

     wait .

     and idea strikes him just then .  blackwatch isn’t allowed to function as a BRANCH .  but that doesn’t include the individual people ,  right ?  maybe he should stop asking for their branch to revive ,  and start asking for his INDIVIDUAL PEOPLE to help with the big stuff .  hah .   he’s a genius .

She wasn’t used to losing, especially at something she was good at. She had not been contested in skill since meeting Cassidy. She was raw, unrefined, no training, bad habits.

                       “Rrgh-!”

Another snarl of frustration as she hit the start button and the holos flickered into  existence. Athena starting to count down in a pleasant robotic tone. She did worse, which was only fueled by the frustration and she let the viper clatter to the counter. Less than perfect meant death.

        REYES LET OUT A SIGH .   he understands her frustration ,  truly .   there was always this lingering need to be perfect .  but perfection wasn’t necessarily achievable when they were only human .   the coils of disappointment can’t help but wrap around themselves as expectations lay heavy on their shoulders , trying to give .   he’s been through this :  sep was brutal .  it signed them up to be more than they could ever be otherwise .

     Jesse couldn’t even REMEMBER the last time Reyes got a hit on him like that — whether that was because it had been so long, or because of the swing, he wasn’t quite sure…

          — should probably get that looked at.

     But one thing Jesse was sure of? He felt OFF, even before the slug to his chin. His mind wondered everywhere but in the room, which ultimately lead to the misread. He’d thought that keeping up with his usual routine would return some sense of normalcy in such chaotic times, help keep his mind off the current state of Overwatch and it’s affiliates.

                    It wasn’t working.

     “Thanks for th’REMINDER…” he mutters, fingers pulling at sore jaw. “ — mind’s just a little preoccupied, is all.” Jesse tries to shake off the hit, exiting the mat to grab his water bottle from the bench, he pauses in stride.

          “It’s been a MONTH — Morrison ain’t gonna bring us back on, is he? Blackwatch is shut down FOR GOOD?”

         ---   THE TWO OF THEM HAD COME TO FAR FOR JESSE TO MISS SUCH AN EASY PUNCH .   it had been years since he’d pulled the kid from deadlock and gave him the option to rot in prison ,  or join blackwatch .   he also knows the past little while has been horribly stressful for everyone affiliated with overwatch .   thinking about it too hard made his jaw grit ,  and is fists clench .

              (  how could he be mad ?  it was his fault ,  anyway .  )

        ---   talking about morrison was no better .   at the mention of him ,  it was hard not to visibly cringe .   he and jack were on rocky terms at the moment .   he’d fucked up pretty badly recently ,  and in such ,  had jeopardized overwatch as a whole .  the reveal of blackwatch was brutal to their reputation .  but ,   he hated having to hide shit for so long .   he understands ,  at first glance ,  that it’s his job to be secretive .   but there was a point where the stuff hidden was harmful ;  where it not being publicly shown was just flat out lying to the public about the company he worked for .

        ---   gabe ignores jesse’s offhanded remark ,  rather addressing his obvious distress about the state of blackwatch .    ❝   i’m working on it ,   ❞   reyes attempts to reassure .   ❝   i’ve been talking to jack about it .  ❞  as if that had changed from the last month .   ❝  we’ll get blackwatch functioning again .   i swear on it .   ❞   not the smartest idea ,  given that jack had absolutely sworn off letting blackwatch function .  but he couldn’t let jesse give up on the branch .

           i like to think a mix of both !!  in my portrayal of gabe ,  he was raised by his single mother  &&  is the oldest of two siblings .   his relationship with his mother is a little rocky at times ,  but for the most part he adores his mother .

       ---    TRAINING WAS ,  IN NO WAY ,   UNFAMILIAR TO REYES .   this was fairly obvious ,   seeing as he ran drills with his blackwatch team quite often .   ashe  --  one of the newer recruits  --  was certainly the ambitious type .   he liked it ,  truth be told .   but ,   much like everything else ,  it seemed to also be a bad thing .   that ambition became a fault during difficult drills .

       ---     said drill was an aiming drill .   for the most part ,  ashe had shown killer aim .   but it seemed this one was proving to be a difficult obstacle .   it was fine ,  really ;  struggle was normal .   even he struggled sometimes ,  and he often came up with the drills .
