When it comes to putting together a shirt and tie combo, some men are born with the odd ability to mix and match patterns, colors, and textures. While some men are lucky, others don't even know what tie to wear and how to match it.
To save yourself from that disappointment, wear the exact same combination hoping no one will notice, or randomly point it to your wardrobe in hopes of getting the right combination for the day. If you are one of these people, you have a problem. As men, we need a better game plan, we need to know what looks best because it shows our own style and personality.
Learning how to combine a shirt and tie well can be a difficult task, but once you understand how to do it, you will not only look good, but also feel better about yourself.

Tie proportion
Tie percentage refers to the width and length of the tie in terms of men's construction and clothing style. If you're a tall man, chances are you're wearing a tall suit and a wide front. You'll look your best when you balance it with a wider-than-average tie that's long enough to reach the waistband. A short man, on the other hand, should look for a smaller tie that is not only narrower but also shorter.
For a medium-sized man, proportions can be a problem when buying from a high-end fashion designer. Men of medium size should wear a tie that is 3 to 3.75 inches wide.
Tricks with dollar bills
If you're shopping for a tie and don't have a roulette with you, try this trick for a dollar bill. All you have to do is take a dollar bill. If the tie is near Washington's nose, you're safe. If it stands out above the portrait or behind a tie, this is not the average width.
The basic rule is to start with the main color of your shirt and then combine the large patterns with the smaller ones.
Solid-on-Solid
This is the easiest and risk-free way to mix and match a shirt tie as there are many ways you can do it better. Here are some of them:
Use contrasting color combinations. Use a darker tie on a light shirt. This will make your outfit stand out with a bit more color.
Use similar color combinations. Are you wearing a pink shirt? Try a red or purple tie. It doesn't have the same effect as a contrasting color combination, but this type of matching shirt and tie creates a level of sophistication.
