You’re too clever by half.

Your intelligence is unmatched, but your smart mouth is going to get you into trouble one of these days. Everyone says so. Odds are you’ll make one witty remark too many and meet a tragic, easily preventable end that surprises no one in the least. You’ll be mourned, of course, but we all saw it coming, and you kind of deserved it.

      “ … ” the droid paused, turning to look at her once again. very rarely was his company desired due to the lack of manners that was expected of most droids. but perhaps any semblance of familiarity was desirable in a world that differed so drastically from their own - himself included. however, the cadence of her voice hinted at something deeper than simply grasping at straws from the past. hesitantly, he moved back towards her with his head tilted in a mildly curious manner, remaining silent for a long, uncomfortable moment - save for the whirring and grinding of various mechanisms in his tiring frame.

      “ well, ” kaytoo began, albeit awkwardly - speaking at length of any personal confessions ( his own or someone else’s ) was not something he was accustomed to, with the exception of cassian. “ i suppose someone has to remember them. ” he continued, uncertain of how much said between them would be welcome, or how much of his assumptions would be correct. it was practically a 50-50 chance that their current conversation could go either way, and he wasn’t sure which percentage he wanted to happen more.

       “ i remember everyone that left me, too. rather, those i left behind. ” those that he should have died alongside, rather than being reactivated here - wherever here happened to be.

       “ ... ” kaytoo hesitated for a moment; how he managed to be so readable to all of these strangers, when he prided himself on being stoic to all but a select few - all of whom were now, presumably, deceased. glancing away from the child for a brief second, as if looking for any eavesdroppers, the droid finally bows his head in a somewhat solemn manner. “ no. no, it isn’t. " 

      but he imagined the same could be said for her situation as well - were children not immune to this bizarre, sick experiment? logically, he could understand the need for a diverse range of subjects but that did not excuse it - nothing justified any of this. bending down as to seem less intimidating to a small child, kaytoo ventured a question of his own. “ are you alright? ”

       k2 is so bitter and sarcastic to everyone except children. he understands children, because he knows what it’s like to be treated as less intelligent, to be dismissed easily, or to have less of a say simply because of what or who you are. he also remembers what it was like once his imperial programming was removed, and to be left confused while his own personality and way of thinking grew - something that could have been labeled his ‘childhood’. this is why, with children, even when he’s terribly upset or angry, he will be much more patient with them than he would be with anyone else.
