REBEL TARTAN : Self - Reflection
-
The aim for this project is to collaborate in order to create our own approach to Rebel Tartan and produce an awareness of human trafficking through textiles design. Throught the process of this project, we’ve gradually improve one week right after the other. I feel as a group we’ve continuously received a positive feedback that we could all be proud of and the amount of work we’ve produce, it’s astounding.
My constant endeavour is to always train and challenged myself into a professional level. To always excel my own self expectations to better my practice and further collect new set of skills.
Working with the team has been such eye-opening experience.
Being close to said colleagues outside of university is different as to who they are when they are in working-mode'. We've learned about each other's work ethic and really inspire each other in terms of motivation and to be curious of different working methods.
Having a different taste and style from one another would always cause some clashing moments with one another but I feel as though as a group, we always try our best to reconcile to decimate any bad blood. There were times were commitment and priorities were challenge.
We are all professional to the best of our abilities and would hate to let anyone down. To be hindered by a misconceptitive matter we don't know nothing about would be incredibly counterproductive and very backwards-thinking. It's within my own belief to always put that obstacle aside if I ever want to move forward.
From what I've experience in the last Unit X, is that I feel as though if we continuously rekindle the same problem repeatedly, our group would gradually break apart and the focused would be elsewhere aside from the collaborative work and individual work. There is only so many tries one should take before finding a new way.
I feel as though I've taken a role of foreman management. Several times, I've organised a week plan to continuously push our groups work process. They became reliant on me as much as I do with them. I know most, if not all, of the members in the group personally and I've learned their work ethos and working capabilities from previous projects. So being a mediator between everyone had not only improved my communication and interpersonal skills but also helped manage a team effectively without taking dictating roles and jobs. I consider myself to be a good judge of character and potential and for me to set a list of objectives is not to act as a tyrant but it's because I know everyone can do it and will definitely keep us up to date with one another.
Even though the project is based on how not to make any garments. I still recognise how my making skills had greatly improved and reached a higher technicality above from my usual standards. I no longer create samples simply for aesthetics but with a concept or a function to validate it's making. I've greatly improved on my skills with in printing as excessively producing sets of prints had become a therapeutic experience.
I feel like I've encountered techniques that might contribute to my final year collection if I were further explore said method in a higher level. There is definitely an opportunity to revisit some research and even the designs that I've produce to inspire future work.
I've greatly enjoyed this project. I feel the ethics behind this unit is very benficial for personal character development, to provide an outlook of the fashion industry in collaborative schemes and how to deal a variety of situations to put the work in favour. I feel as though this project was an incredible conclusion to end my second year and to transition towards my final year in BA Fashion.

Wednesday, 3rd May : Group Design Selection Process
Today is our group selection on what we would like to put forward for Robin to see.
Seeing as we all have a range of garments we wanted to design, it would be ideal to reflect on eachother’s work and gave our opinion in order to refine our number of designs.
In terms of critiquing each other’s work, there was definitely some tension as we all have our own preference and opinions.
After the meeting, we all left to our own devices to further redraw and take note of the opinions we shared.

FABRIC ROAD TRIP
Rose, Jack and I, once again went on to Jack’s car and cruised around in Manchester to all the fabric shops we’ve been to before to retrace the fabrics that we have purchased as we now had a set fabric board we agreed on.

GROUP CRITIC: PT.2
During our group critic, it was very important that our message was crystal clear to our audience as it is not only our tutor that we are presenting to but to the MIAO embroidery group as well as a guest named Joanna Green - the representative of Rebel Tartan and a friend of our tutor, Poppy.
From when it was our group, we were confident with everyone being in the same mind-set. Fully able to take on from one point to another on que. We relied on our posters to cover our topic for they contain all the key images, research and final group line-up.
We were pretty adamant on showcasing pour narrative in relation to Rebel Tartan to human trafficking and the other pressing point of how we collaboration as a group, throughout the Unit X project.
-
We received an extremely positive feedback from the tutors. They were able recognize the substantial amount of work we’ve put into and went through. It was incredibly validating.
They also cared to mention how successful we worked as team, which was very important for us. How the project itself had a variety of personalities yet anchored by the research of human trafficking.
Poppy commented as to how our group line-up could escalate to 40-looked collection! To which we express how difficult it was to narrow down to a line-up of 12 looks!
Sarah and Poppy compared our working ethos from the start of the year and how well we have improved as an individual -how our designer skills had bettered and how our delivery was professional.
During our interview with Joanna, we had parroted ourselves, seemingly well organised in the mind. She had the same reaction with everyone else: positive, appraising and claimed how well our work spoke for itself.
-
Now all we need is to conclude the project for the deadline but for now, enjoy the exhibition!

EXHIBITION DAY
We started the day with a rolecall and a health&saftety signing sheet.
Then Jack volunteered to drive the group along with the posters and other people’s projects to help everyone else. The good Samaritan.
When we arrived, we discussed the layout out of the room and to arrange the posters/20 pages.
Having made the posters, we hadn’t need to spend extra time to sort out any order of any work. Once we marked where we would layout on the wall, we went away to run some errands for the other groups and for our tutors.
We were told to take our time, so we did.
When we got what we need to the shopping centre , we grabbed something to eat as a ‘celebratory feast’ of sort. Enjoying ourselves.
When we got back, we set up our poster in under 15 minutes so we were told once againg to help some other groups or to take the free time and chill.
We were so relieved on our layout as we could relax the day and discuss other further actions and to simply await for the final crit!

Day’s End
-
As the end of the day approaches, the group dropped one by one to get home to rest as we have some have been up from 5am in the morning.

At very late 9pm: group file organised, the poster my tutors asked me to create and print is ready, samples in a carrier bag, stacked the finished posters neatly - all ready to be picked up in the morning.
I very satisfied with the finished outcome. The posters have illustrated our overall focus and practice for this Rebel Tartan brief.
Im very excited for tomorrows exhibition!

Working Atmosphere
-
I’ve noticed that today has been a true test of how the group work together cohesively to produce a finished presentation.
There has been a vibe of negativity I’ve noticed within the groups.
I do understand that when it comes to work ethics and priorities, there is a definite clash.

Work, Work, Work, Work
-
Having finished our personal lineups the day before, Jack and I started organizing the pages from everyone else and decide which one to showcase per board then to photocopy it.
The whole day process was a steady and stressful routine.
Copy. Cut. Paste. Copy. Cut. Paste. Copy. Cut. Paste.
Simple as it may sound, the process was a steady and stressful routine.
It was an implicit decision for me to direct the layout. Throughout the whole day, everyone in our group repeatedly asked me if they should include a this and that page.
This was quite stressful to priorities which pages to include and how to seeing as we had so many files and pages to go through. It was also particularly difficult to successfully include all of everyone design.
I find myself having for my team’s approval to ensure everyone is happy with the input they have on the poster.

It was a messy day.

Thursday, 11th May : Action Stations
-
Today may be one of the most active and stressful for the Unit X as we solidify our work to present for the exhibition.
First thing in the morning, we had a discussion of the itinerary for the day of the exhibition.
Sarah has entrusted me with her staff ID to use to pay for the printing the REBEL TARTAN and other relevant posters.
And thankfully, we are able to use the printing credit when it comes to printing our group posters too!
May have been the best news yet!
For us to print the exhibited pieces for free it did not go underappreciated!
I just hope the opportunity wasn’t taken for granted when the times when the card was not on my hand.
