Salmon Poisoning Disease by Dr. Krista Hight
Our Veterinary Hospital has seen several cases of Salmon Poisoning Disease in the last couple of weeks. We want to remind everyone that dogs should never eat raw Salmon! Please be vigilant if your dogs are out hiking or have access to streams that may house salmon. If your dog gets sick, make sure to mention any possible exposure to raw fish at your veterinary appointment.
Salmon Poisoning Disease causes severe diarrhea, fever, inappetence, vomiting, enlarged lymph nodes, and severe lethargy in dogs and is often fatal if not treated. It is only prevalent in Washington, Oregon, northern California, and British Columbia. It is caused by a fluke (parasite) carried in the kidneys of salmon that matures into a Rickettsial (microorganism) infection in the canine gastrointestinal tract that then spreads and replicates in the lymph nodes. It usually takes 5-7 days post-ingestion of an infected fish to start showing symptoms (diarrhea and fever being the most common). It is diagnosed by testing the feces for fluke eggs and is treated with dewormer medication and antibiotics. Often dogs have to be hospitalized for treatment, because they are usually too sick to eat or drink.
Other properly prepared raw diets and other dry, wet and freeze-dried salmon diets are perfectly healthy and nutritious for your animals. Speak to a Reber Ranch team member if you have any questions.
-Dr. Krista Hight

Reber Ranch Turns Black Friday into an Opportunity of Pure Giving Back
KENT, WASH. NOVEMBER 15, 2017
view full press release here
Every year, the holidays spark a particular feeling that inspires people to become more festive, more reflective, and more importantly, more giving. Reber Ranch, a local pet supply store, is no different.
This year, Reber Ranch is jump-starting the holiday spirit with a special charity event that supports the Valley Retired Police Dog Association(VRPDA). The goal of this association is to financially support Police Service dogs in their retirement years, in which their medical costs are higher than most other dogs due to years of physically demanding work.
With an in-kind donation from Reber Ranch, the Valley Retired Police Dog Association was able to print calendars for the 2018 year that they can sell for $10 each to raise funds to help support the retired K-9s that need continued care.
Reber Ranch will be selling the calendars in their store, and 100% of the sales will go to the Valley Retired Police Dog Association. To help promote the sale of calendars, on November 24th, otherwise known as Black Friday, police officers and their K-9 partners will be in the Reber Ranch store to sign calendars and do a demonstration of what the K-9s are trained to do.
“The Valley Retired Police Dog Association is an organization that is near and dear to the hearts of everyone at Reber Ranch,” said Carrie Estrada, Marketing Manager at Reber Ranch. “In 2017, we collected and donated more than $3,300 to the organization, and we are excited to see how much more we can earn for them with the calendar sales.”
Reber Ranch has set a goal to sell 300 calendars this year, which will bring in an additional $3,000 for VRPDA. In addition, Reber Ranch will be donating 2% of all sales that take place during the calendar signing window.
“We have some pretty remarkable Black Friday deals happening that day,” said Bill Greene, General Manager of Reber Ranch. “Our hope is that we will generate a lot of store traffic that will garner a nice donation for VRPDA.”
Calendar signings will take place at Reber Ranch on November 24th, from 4pm to 6pm. K-9 Demonstrations will start at 5pm.
