Help, I’ve fallen ...

There once was a television commercial for a gadget you wear around your neck when you get old and fall down and need help. The old lady would fall, then cry out “Help, I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.” For some reason this was humorous to many, and unforgettable to most.

Several years ago my younger sister who has always been physically active decided there weren’t enough yoga classes in her town, so she spent 18 months traveling back and forth to a big city to get certified as a yoga instructor herself. One of the first things she taught me was this: get down in the floor and get back up -- ten times a day. You do not want to lose the ability to get up because when you get old, you’re more prone to fall.

Ten times seemed excessive, but I knew I could do it at least twice a day every day. I reasoned that my mom got down on her knees to pray every day, I could get down in the floor to ensure I’d always be able to get back up. 

I’m older now. I live in a senior mobile home park. My yoga classes are filled with women as much as twenty years older than I am. We don’t get down in the floor because it’s chair yoga. But, one of the first things I did was ask the yoga instructor to show us all how to get down and get back up. 

My balance is still excellent. I’m strong and flexible. I go to chair yoga twice a week, and do yoga moves at home almost every day. I also swim almost every day. If you don’t do any other exercise at all, getting up and down from the floor every day may save your life.
