Band Of Brothers vs. The Pacific - Endings
Band of Brothers is all about brotherhood and how these men joined and formed a uniquely close knit group, those friendships helping them getting through the worst of war and with the same purpose, making it a point to contradict their motto “Currahee” meaning “stand alone.” In fact the motto is more apt to the characters of The Pacific, which shows a much more cynical side of WWII seldom explored in movies and television. There’s a sense of isolation that isn’t in Band of Brothers that can be found in The Pacific with the characters scattering at the end of the war, and with Band of Brothers ending with a wide shot of the company when The Pacific ends with a wide shot of Eugene Sledge alone.
#band of brothers#the pacific#maybe that's why i never got into the characters in the pacific?#band of brothers is better but i admittedly don't remember it that clearly by now

Rami Malek as Snafu Shelton in The Pacific
#the pacific#i found the series mostly a slog#but it was worth trudging through for Carl Franklin's episode and Rami Malek's weirdo performance#snafu shelton

#the last of us#long long time#i wish i didn't see so much about this episode beforehand#it's a nice little story and the end moves joel's arc forward convincingly#but one of the best tv episodes ever? hmm#tbh i preferred the second episode#on the nature of daylight is castle rock's forever#though shutter island may be the use i've seen that's most faithful to the original context

Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan in SEE HOW THEY RUN (2022), Dir. Tom George
#see how they run#stalker x stoppard#saorise ronan is so freaking charming in this#would watch them in many a hijink#they could drop the fourth-wall-breaking though in the hypothetical sequels

A few thoughts on Avatar: The Way of Water
- James Cameron reasserts his mastery of the event movie. Like, no one else is even trying to make spectacle at his level. Watching it in 3D IMAX at Udvar-Hazy was an ideal environment and I wish everyone could see it there.
- Ryan Coogler’s a great director, but the underwater scenes here vs. Wakanda Forever show what a difference it makes when crews get the time they need to do their work properly
- It was, uh, not surprising that there were four credited editors
- Jemaine Clement should've had a way bigger part
- There’s some intriguing tension between movie’s stance on mortality (basically, it ties the humans’ moral corruption to their denial of death) and Cameron’s use of de-aging and other digital technology. I hope the future sequels dig more into those themes.
- Gritting my teeth for the inevitable, probably necessary cultural appropriation discourse
- Though the characters individually aren’t very interesting, I got invested in the survival of the family unit and these cultures, and the "From darkness to light” sequence is the most moving blockbuster climax in a while
- These movies are so weird! The thought of a film with an extended sequence explaining the mechanics of whale-hunting making a billion dollars tickles me. Moby Dick strikes again!
#avatar: the way of water#it's so funny comparing the train crashes here and the fabelmans#there's a secret war going on#and its commanders are james cameron and chris nolan#pick a side#bioluminescence can get it
