I think part of why Gem is so quick to lean into Grian's suggestion of being villains is because it's the closest she'll get to being a red life with Pearl before the finale. Gem loves it when Pearl shows off just how competent she is and loves encouraging her to be more destructive and violent towards others. Pearl is a very capable player and is easily one of the strongest on the server but she doesn't like to show off and tends to undervalue herself. A lot of her strategy in the life series is to keep her head down and not draw too much attention to herself and you can see her doing that already in this session. Pearl likes to play into being a wet cat but Gem knows she's far more than that.

Gem, on the other hand, is all about shows of strength and intimidation. People on the server fear Gem and she encourages and embraces it. She's had a reputation from before she even joined the series and she's had no choice but to play into it. Everyone knows Gem is capable and dangerous and I think in some ways it bothers her that people don't seem to think Pearl is too. For as much as Gem teases Pearl, Gem does consider Pearl as an equal. Gem wants Pearl to stand beside her at the top of the pecking order like she belongs.
