Plan and Reflection: Wednesday 9th of May
Plan
Refine everything, check all work is present and finished. I want to work really hard on the worksheets I have failed to do so far so I have a more rounded project.
Reflection
I officially find worksheets the hardest, most tedious and tiring aspect of any project. However, I have made 10 in the last 2 days and hopefully will finish a few more before tomorrow. (Scary deadline day!)

Plan and Reflection: Tuesday 8th of May
Plan
Today I will reflect back on the proposal and add this reflection into my evaluation. I will make sure my blogs have covered everything I can and that I have printed out necessary signs and leaflets for my exhibition.
Reflection
This has been successful and I have also started some worksheets I have so far neglected during the project.

Finish sewing curtains and start sewing title to cover the top of the curtains. Also, finish writing the evaluation to shorten and add pictures to at a later date.
Reflection
I have successfully finished sewing the curtains, all that is left is the hangings. I have also completely finished writing my evaluation, I will review and add pictures next week.

Plan and Reflection: Thursday 3rd of May
Plan
Today I will finish what I didn't get to do yesterday and work on the signs/leaflets I will need to print out for my exhibition.
Reflection
I have improved on the signs and leaflets for my exhibition and reviewed the notes I took yesterday for my evaluation as I won't be able to finish them until Tuesday. I will now try to figure out a way I will block the top of the entrance as there is a gap between the top and the rail for the curtain which I need to sort out.
Tumblr media
Plan and Reflection: Friday 4th of May and Saturday 5th of May
I have started work on my evaluation which will take longer than expected because I tend to waffle on and write a lot more than needed. Therefore I will need to spend at least one more day on this.

Plan and Reflection: Wednesday 2nd of May
Plan
Today I want to go over my proposal and take notes on things that have changed, have gone well, and things I could improve on if I did it again so I am all set to write my evaluations in a few days. I also want to go through my blog and take notes from that too.
Reflection
Sadly, I do not have my finished proposal on my laptop and have left it on a computer in college. Therefore I went through my blog instead and took as many notes as possible.

Plan and Reflection: Monday 30th of April
Plan
Today I want to look at what I would do next if this wasn't a college project and even possibilities of what I can do with this project in the future. Send the film off to charities or enter the film into competitions etc
Reflection
I have looked into possibilities of entering my work into competitions and I think it would be a really fun thing to do that opens lots of doors for me. I have posted some links on my main blog to send my work into once I have everything sorted out. Then only trouble is copyright issues with the music I have used, I am not sure what breeches the guidelines so to be on the safe side I have emailed the artists to ask if I can use their music for this purpose. Looking at all these events has given me a new lease of life with my work. It has given more ambition to do similar things in future and feel proud of my work. Maybe even be recognised within the industry if my work is nominated.

Today I finished sewing my duvet cover and its probably the thing I’m most proud of in this project so far. I know it isn’t a big part of my project but I’m proud of it because I actually planned it thoroughly before hand and executed it just how I had planned to which doesn’t happen often within my work. Considering I don’t don’t a lot of stitch work either I am so happy with it turned out its mostly even and the exact shape I wanted it to be. I first got someone to draw around my with chalk, carefully deciding how I was going to lay. I then hand stitched that shape just on one side, not all the way through as I need to put a duvet in there. I remembered from textiles classes in school that I am a menace with sewing machines, I use them wrongly and get confused, then they break then I inevitably break with frustration so I’m glad I was able to hand stitch it just as well.

Plan and Reflection: Saturday 28th of April
Plan
Today I want to start to sew the body outline into a duvet cover which I will later put in as the floor in my tent.
Reflection
I have started sewing as planned and so far I am very happy with the outcome and glad I chose to hand stitch rather than use a sewing machine.
Plan and Reflection: Sunday 29th of April
Finished sewing the bed cover.

Plan and Reflection: Friday 27th of April
Plan
Today I will go into college and paint some more of my tent structure, I will also figure out a way to hang my curtains that I will later make.
Reflection
I painted the last bits. I only need to figure out a few more sizes of wood I need but this will have to happen when I am able to put all the pieces together after the 10th of May. This is because before then I cannot put together all the pieces of my tent as I won't be able to move it to a different room once I am finished and the exhibition space is only available after that day. I also fitted the pole for my curtains to hang on but I will need to secure this better after I  actually make the curtains.

Plan and Reflection: Thursday 26th of April
Plan
Today I want to start building a wooden frame for my tent instead of PVC. I also have to finish cutting out all my sections of fabric now I have some more.
Reflection
Today I build most of my frame which I am happy about, I also cut out the rest of the fabric as intended. I did a few trials for a title but non of these worked and I have decided I will use the whiteboard behind my exhibition space for it. Although today I have been productive than yesterday I am severely ‘bummed out’ at the fact I had to redo all the work I did yesterday and spent extra money on things that didn't work out. However, this has shown me where I lack organisation and I will be able to improve on this for the duration left of the project.

Theoretical Issue
Only One Person
As I have highlighted before one of the hardest things I have experienced throughout this project was having to write, direct, film, edit and act the films by myself. In part it was a conscious decision, I did not want to interfere with other peoples projects and I had a very particular image in my head about how everything should look. On the other hand it was a tremendous challenge to do all of it myself especially with being infant of the camera. If I had a full team I would have done things differently. I would have cast the characters in the way I have depicted them in my character profiles. Secondly I would have more moving shots, the camera following the character. Something that is key and I admire in experimental film is long shots set in one location. In an ideal world for this project I would have 3 separate actresses (however I have found positives in using 1). I would film and direct and if I had the opportunity, a helping hand to edit. I did eventually enjoy making the film, the fact it is almost finished gives me a great sense of pride that I did it alone. However, during the few weeks of failed filming attempts and then limited time I was stressed and sensitive. This gave me a new perspective on the project but it wasn’t great at the time.
Display
If I could display my work in any possible way I would create a very uncomfortable scenario. I would have one room filled top to bottom with screens. White walls, floor and ceiling, no furniture and very clean as though in a hospital. This would symbolise how mental illness is as serious and needs treating as much as physical illness. I would also have a second room that had 5 cameras in it. The viewer would step into the dimly light room, there would be a luminous square on the floor and with me operating it theatre style lights would shoot on illuminating the viewer in a spot light when they stand in the square. This would shock the viewer. One camera would be positioned directly in front of the face however not obstructing their view. Two more would be slightly to either side of the first. Another would be at stomach level making the viewer uncomfortable or insecure about how they hold themselves. The last would show their full body. The viewer by this point would feel tremendously awkward. As horrid as this might feel it is for a reason.
All these cameras would instantly stream footage to the room with the screens, this room is filled with people watching different cameras on different screens. The viewer in the room with cameras then watches the film I made which is projected onto the back wall covering all of it. Obviously by now the viewer is so uncomfortable and tense. I do not wish to cause harm to the person in any way, it is just to show how someone with a mental illness would feel daily. The box to stand in would show that they are confined to that space even though they are in a big room, they are being controlled. The cameras are to make them more conscious of their bodies and as though they’re constantly being watched. The bright lights are harsh on the eyes and show an unflattering image on the screens in the other room. Everything I would make and design would be to make the viewer feel how some of us do when engulfed by mental illness. Alone, humiliated, confused, upset, insecure etc.
The people in the other room (who one by one are in front of the camera watching the film) should understand that although the person on the screens looks like a ‘normal’ human they are really struggling. Although their inner turmoil isn’t visible on the outside they are suffering internally. Once each person is in front of the camera they will understand. The difference is they only feel it for the 6 minutes of film, not during a panic attack that lasts 20 minutes or a relapse that lasts 6 months. Understanding mental illness through film isn’t about graphic imagery or grey clouds its about putting the viewer in the characters shoes.
This is how I would display my film if I had all the resources I needed however due to time, space and money constraints this is not possible for my exhibition.

An Issue with the Tent
Today I stubbled across an issue that I will have to resolve quite quickly. There is not enough MDF (or similar material) at college for me to use as a base for my tent. This means that the structure of my tent will be dreadful and the risk is it won’t stand up. I have decided I will attach some pieces of string the the large end of the tent to the ceiling to help but this really isn’t enough. Another option is to just use long strips of wood as a replacement for the bottom polls. This still means I can staple the tent to it and it will help a bit more with support but until I try I don’t know.
I think tomorrow I will have to see if there is enough wood for me me to completely remake my inner structure. This means the same dimensions just using thicker wood rather than PVC so the whole tent is more stable. If there is enough I will definitely get cracking making it rather then faff around to see if the first options MIGHT work and have a disaster on exhibition day. Although, I hope there will be enough wood, I am able to make it and it would be better I do feel deflated at the prospect of scraping a weeks worth of work.

Plan and Reflection: Wednesday 25th of April
Plan
Today I want to cut out and begin to form the tent. I will need to buy some more fabric so I will either order that today or find a shop that sells the same material I already have. I also want to sort out what I will be doing for the floor of my tent and begin to think about signs I will need for display to guide the viewer.
Reflection
I have successfully achieved my plan for today and also built the main parts for the structure of my tent from PVC. However, I will need to rethink my structure as it isn't very strong at the moment.

Review of Exhibition Ideas
My project has developed a lot so far and its not always easy to document all the thoughts and processes I have. So here is a brief run down of where I am at with my exhibition, not including the research I have already posted on my blog about inspirations. All my ideas have been based around making the viewer feel uncomfortable in one way or another.
Viewing Plinth
Initially, after a few different ideas, I decided I would create a plinth that you looked down into through a viewing slot. You would have headphones on and when looking down see a projection facing upwards onto a piece of tracing paper in the centre. After beginning creating this I lost the plinth, the plinth when found was battered up and then decided I wanted a more immersive exhibition piece anyway. This was the last time I worked on my plinth:

Bathroom Projection
With this plan I wanted the viewer to stand in a bathroom watching the projection of my film on the bathroom wall. I liked this idea because it was in a big space that the viewer walked in to, therefore more immersive but not as isolating as I would have liked. This didn’t go to plan as every time I attempted projecting this onto the college bathrooms or my bathroom at home it didn’t work. I tried to resolve the issues that occurred but sadly it became obvious that this plan wasn’t working.
Tumblr media
Current: Cave/Tent
This is my favourite and most challenging plan so far. I have never worked with anything on such a large scale before and the resources are much more expensive and harder to get. This idea has the perfect balance of immersive space and isolation for the viewer. This is where I am up to so far in my create of the tent. It is a small paper model with the dimensions written on that I will use to make the real thing.
Tumblr media
I want to make sure that my final piece isn’t just a film on a computer screen. I want there to be an experience and hopefully with some more work and planning this tent will create what I am going for.

Plan and Reflection: Tuesday 24th of April
Plan
Today I want to begin to make my tent/cave. As the materials are expensive I need to get this right first time so today will mostly be planning.
Reflection
Today I have measured and jotted down the dimensions I have to work with and what I can create within that. I have made the poles for the structure and started to mark out on the fabric where the panels are. I am happy that I finally have a good idea but I am worried because I have not bought enough material. This means having to spend more money and losing time whilst I wait for it to be delivered. Thankfully I can work with what I have for now.
