hello, everyone! 

we come with some unfortunate news: refraction will be closing. although we really loved the concept, ideas, and especially all the wonderful muses that gave this directory life, we’ve become too busy in our lives to give refraction the proper love and care it deserves. 

we will be keeping the blog up, along with the OOC side blog. you are, of course, free to continue your threads and develop your muses anyway you wish! if you’re curious about the plot of refraction and want to know what we had planned, we will still be on this account for a week or so. feel free to message us and we will tell you all the secrets of afterlife.

we hope we can meet again somewhere else in the future; until then, please stay safe and happy!

hello, everyone! our second event of this arc is starting soon and with that comes a few new characters. to give potential muns of these muses time to apply, we are introducing them before the start of the event. applications for these characters will be accepted when the event is released on sunday. 

there are four new muses total: the skeletons, mentor and dragon, and the temporary characters, trainer and boxer. these muses are deeply connected with event 2; please only read about them if you don’t mind massive spoilers. the characters are now listed on the census page.

NEW SKELETONS

mentor. born 1996 / died 57.07.20 (61) / noble, righteous, wishful, desperate a leader left alone; the lone survivor, they were the mentor of a team of hackers who attempted to infiltrate AFTpex. carrying the responsibility of the mission and the burden of grief, they push onward, looking for other survivors and to eradicate life after death.

dragon. born 2031 / died 57.07.24 (26) / pessimistic, selfish, competitive, angry a pro-gamer who suffered an untimely death. hiding their gamer identity from everyday life, dragon never truly enjoyed what living had to offer. dragon continues to keep a low-profile, choosing to hide away in their favorite game to avoid any and all social interactions.

TEMPORARY CHARACTERS

trainer. born 2015 / died 57.07.20 (42) / resilient, kind, parental figure  pre-haker, trainer's homelife was filled with misfortune, yet they remained bright and seemed unaffected -- the smaller joys in light outweighed the neglect they faced; trainer continued to find new things to attempt and achieve. as a talented coder, when the opportunity to join the underground anti-AFTpex group, it just felt right. their rank within the anti-AFTpex group raised with their affection towards others around them. fate had brought them a new set of reasons to keep fighting: the found family of others just like them. trainer would do anything for those under their care and for advancing the cause, destroying AFTpex.  

boxer. born 2023 / died 27.07.20 (34) / desperate, skittish, remorseful  the boxer had a life that could be thought of as mundane and regular, one that would quickly change when their father joined AFTpex. as a software engineer, boxer’s father was hired to work on afterlife before the public release. but while afterlife glimmered with what could be, boxer saw the true reality of what it truly brought: afterlife would change the world, but it changed boxer’s, too. after the divorce, boxer lived with their mother -- what was abundant quickly diminished until both money and resources were completely depleted. boxer, seeing how AFTpex ruined their family, sought revenge from then on, and joined the underground resistance in hopes of achieving just that. but like everyone, boxer has a secret, unspeakable to even themselves. (please message the main for the secret only if you are 99% sure on playing this character!)

hi, everyone! our first event has officially ended, but there is still a lot to unravel within this arc. because the event is over, the meme is no longer a viable source of activity and should not be sent to others or reblogged; however, if you still have muse for certain questions, feel free to do them on your own! threads that have been started during this event can, of course, be continued as well.

life before death

there was a storm the day she was born.

it wasn’t uncommon in jeju city. it was the end of monsoon season after all, and it seemed the perfect pairing to the wails of the choi’s newborn daughter. the nurses made their sweet comments, saying how beautiful she was, how healthy she looked. but in reality, she was just like all the other babies.

she grew up on jeju island, neither poor nor wealthy. always solidly average, it seemed. her father worked at a nice hotel, one popular with tourists. her mother had previously worked at the same place, but left the job to be a stay at home mother once jinae was born. she wasn’t much trouble as a child and didn’t show any kind of striking promise so early. jinae whined often, though that was no doubt the product of being an only child, doted on from an early age. they were a close knit family who enjoyed each other’s company. jinae and her mother would visit the hotel on her father’s lunch break, the trio took a big trip once a year, and no one ever missed eating dinner together. no family was perfect, but overall they were happy.

most of jinae’s energy in school was spent on being social. she liked to talk and did it often. even when she had nothing of importance to say, she found herself filling the silence if only to have the attention for a few moments. growing up an only child, she was used to getting more than her fair share of attention. now she had to share that with her peers. she aligned herself with the popular girls, never the one in charge, but indispensable as she always seemed to know everything about everyone.

when most of her friends made the decision to attend university in seoul, jinae followed suit. she had never been particularly smart, but her mother never gave her the opportunity to slack off when it came to school work. she was accepted into a decent school, got a degree in marketing, and fell into a routine in seoul. despite missing her family, she liked the simple life she had built for herself.

there was a storm the day she died.

things were going well. jinae had just attended an interview for a social media marketing position that she thought went extremely well. tonight she planned to go out with friends, a pre-celebration for the job she was nearly certain she would get. and tomorrow, her parents were coming in to town to visit. it wasn’t her fault. her phone slipped out of her hand and into the street. without a second thought, she jumped after it, eager to save it from an oncoming car or the rain.

she failed to notice the bus approaching, or the fact that the rain kept the driver from properly seeing her.

life after death

those who attended the funeral of the young choi jinae had only pleasant things to say about the girl. they talked about her kindness, her wit, her work effort. all normal, if not generic, things to be said at a funeral. the truth of the matter was, in life, jinae was rather unremarkable.

her death had been on impact, so she was surprised when she regained consciousness and found herself as part of afterlife. her family had discussed it a few times, but never seemed to have a preference for or against it. she understood the decision to have her uploaded: she was so young, and this would giver her a chance at some kind of life. but she cried and screamed until there was no air left in her lungs.

the life she had built for herself was gone. her apartment would be rented to someone else. her friends would be sad but eventually move on. but jinae could see her family now, mourning the loss of their only child. she wanted nothing more than to comfort them, hold them and assure them she would be okay. she pleaded with the system, just one chance to see them again. it was impossible, she was told. but this jinae wasn’t the same girl she was on earth. this one had nothing to lose. maybe it was the only child inside of her that was rarely told no but she refused to accept that answer.

jinae never had to be tough in life. in life she was content as a side character in someone else’s story. but now she had nothing to lose. once she was able to pull herself together she wasted no time in exploring. the ‘afterlife’ was endless, surely there had to be some way to get a message to the other side. months went on with jinae searching everywhere she could think of. books, different planets, separate sectors. she interrogated anyone she thought might have any ties to AFTpex or anyone that seemed to know more than the average about the system. every time she thought she was getting anywhere she was met with a dead end. months turned into years and before she knew it, eight years had passed.

the people who know what jinae is searching for think it’s pointless. they encourage her to stop wasting her time on a fruitless hunt. but this search has turned her into a different person. to gain LP to continue her traveling, she finds herself making an effort to help others. what started as a chore became a habit. jinae had never been much of an adventurer in her actual life, but now every day seems new and exciting. and her curiosity and constantly evolving personality seems to attract people to her.

while she remains focused on her goal, she’s found a new sort of life in the midst of it all. some tell her to slow down and relax, just enjoy this opportunity she’s been given. but slow down and relax was what she had done in the real world, and it didn’t pay off so well for her in the end.

she chooses the username imbris, the latin word for storm. a common theme in her life, she knows now that she embodies a storm much more now than ever before.
