NSHA Fail
I have a few friends in CB who have been brutalized by McNeil’s NSHA. I have been a Nova Scotian by choice for 26 years. In the last 10 I have seen Community Mental Health in HFX devolve into a useless front for Liberal authoritarianism. The last move to obscure the issues was appalling (https://www.thecasket.ca/opinion/columnists/vibert-liberals-determined-to-contain-critics-281060/). Doctors and first responders have been blocked from having a public say at health committee meetings!
I could go on about Dr. McGillvary, etc., but we all watched while she was viciously attacked. The FB group #HowManyNSHA-IWK presented a petition yesterday. I was approached by one of the organizers to contribute, but was unable as my panic disorder has been worsened tenfold from lack of treatment.
This is my story, in brief. My experiences in the last decade, especially since the formation of the consolidated NSHA have been damaging, not positive. I have been treated by a pdoc who later had his license revoked, by a mental health nurse who treated me like it was my fault and a psych resident who ignored a 45+ year history of abuse, depression, anxiety and C-PTSD. Previously I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and told there WAS no treatment. When that didn’t work (I had a terrible reaction to drugs that never should have been prescribed for me...TWICE) this latest ‘resident’ diagnosed DYSTHYMIA!! Now I am so demoralized I can barely leave my flat, I’m living off my meager savings, and all before me is dark. Shame on you Stephen McNeil, and you Randy Delorey! #MadAsHell #epicfail #nspoli #failedmentalhealthcaresystem #howmanyNSHAIWK #NSHACrisis

“…only 3.6% of Nova Scotia’s health budget is spent on mental health…"
"For many years the province contributed virtually nothing to the CMHA while expecting [it] to run public education programs, mount workshops for various professions, support community mh centres, provide volunteers to visit the mh institutions, and establish community-based programs for the post-mentally ill….The lack of federal money for mh after dedicated post-war grants ceased meant that access to cost-shared dollars and project grants was limited. Going after project funding…has consumed a disproportionately large amount of energy. The lack of support for the CMHA has resulted in the sacrifice of much talent in the field of mental health.” [Protect, Befriend, Respect: Nova Scotia’s Mental Health Movement 1908-2008, 2008] p.1-3
(see this is EXACTLY why i’m v critical of the glut of awareness campaigns that move focus away from actual mental health funding and health care/programming/community supports for people living with mental illness. it’s a smokescreen, and without the latter you’re not going to decrease stigma or have people able to participate in the community anyway.)
