3ds Max 2024.1 released

Autodesk has announced the release of 3ds Max 2024.1, introducing several new features and improvements to its existing tools.
The update includes significant enhancements to the Boolean Modifier, with a new caching method offering up to seven times faster loading of Boolean scenes. Additionally, the Boolean Modifier now fully supports smoothing groups, specified normals, and explicit normals that exist on input Boolean operands, effectively processing and including normal data in the result meshes created by the modifier.
The Array Modifier also receives considerable updates, including new Array By Element methods that provide users greater control over the arrangement of elements. Previously, if a source object had multiple elements and Array By Element was enabled, each element was randomly used as a clone. Now, two new Array By Element methods let you control how elements are arranged. A new ‘Variation’ parameter has been added, allowing users to adjust the angle of clones in phyllotactic spirals. Additionally, there are new parameters for the Phyllotaxis Distribution Method, offering more control over randomization.
One of the major user interface improvements in 3ds Max 2024.1 is the ability to create custom defaults through the context menus. This allows users to set user-defined default settings for many spinners, check boxes, radio buttons, text fields, drop-down menus, and colors.

Anima 5.1 released

AXYZ design has announced the release of anima 5.1, the latest version of its crowd simulation software.
With anima 5.1, users can duplicate and modify subscription assets in their projects, with the original asset needing to be installed and available for use of the modified resource. Animated thumbnails for assets from the online store have been added for easier preview and users can now adjust the size of the thumbnails in the actor panel and use the integrated search engine from the online store for asset discovery.
Additionally, anima 5.1 offers a new reset time slider to set the time for actors to be teleported back to the start of a path, and a new toggle to show or hide passwords in the sign-in dialog. The search engine from the original store has been integrated into the actor panel, project packing performance has been improved has been improved for sending to render farms. The plugins can now display a special model to indicate an access error when reading from 4D resources.
The 3ds Max Plugin in anima 5.1 allows duplicated drop characters to be a copy instead of an instance only, with improved compatibility of the 4D models with Chaos Vantage. It also includes support for 3dsMax 2024. Support for Maya 2024 has been added in the Maya Plugin.

Camera Tracker: Error Thresholds Rollout

The Camera Tracker utility’s Error Thresholds rollout attempts to identify feature tracking errors by taking measurements and comparing them to the thresholds that you set up in this rollout. You can use this detection can be used both during a manual tracking review or during actual tracking to correct errors using the Resample On Error control in the Motion Trackers setup rollout.

Interface
Match Error
A sum-of-differences-squared measure in RGB space of the best match in the current frame to the feature target from the previous keyframe. The error shown is a percentage of the maximum possible image difference. Good matches are usually below 0.05 percent.Variance Delta
The difference in RGB color variance between the feature target image and the current best match. This measures whether the target and match have similar color ranges and can compensate for mistakes made by the sum-of-differences measure.Jump Delta
The tracker computes a moving average for the preceding five frames and measures the difference between that average and the jump in the current frame. If this difference exceeds the current Jump delta threshold, a potential error is flagged. If the threshold is set to five, any jump in the current frame that’s five pixels more than the average jump in the last five frames is flagged. This picks up sudden accelerations rather than just large jumps.
You can adjust the thresholds as needed and enable or disabled individual measures in the detector using the checkboxes to the left of each measure.

Autodesk has released 3ds Max 2024

Autodesk has released 3ds Max 2024. New features include:
OCIO colour management is now available as a technology preview, bringing modern colour management solutions throughout Max. 
A new boolean modifier is available that allows users to incorporate boolean operations into the modifier stack. 
An OpenVDB meshing method is included in the new boolean modifier, providing an alternate wat to calculate operations. OpenVDb booleans are topologically independent of the source geometry and they will often yield good results even when mesh errors are present that would cause standard boolean techniques to fail. 
The array modifier is updated with a new Phyllotaxis distribution technique. This type of pattern is frequently seen in nature, particularly in plants and trees. 
The array modifier includes a new Material ID rollout that can control the materials IDs on a per-face or per-element basis. Several modes are available including random, sequenced, and the ability to change the ID of the first and last clone in an array and randomise the remainder. 
The array modifier can now use a progressive transform mode that increments the transform value for each element. 
A new controller allows the user to add multiple Transform controllers to an object as layers of blended animation data. This lets animators add unique animation data to each layer, as well as allows them to control how the layers blend together.
A new material node allows the user to switch between multiple materials using a numeric index. 
The motion paths feature that allows users to visualise animation paths has been updated so that it can now be used for all controller types and it works with the new list controllers. 
The slate material editor has been overhauled to use QT. As a result, it’s much more customisable and dockable, as well as promising significant speed improvements. 
The material editor now includes a new Compound node that allows you to create sub-graphs. These can be used to organise large graphs to aid legibility. Creating a compound is as simple as right-clicking on a selection of nodes and selecting Package Nodes in Compound, 
The Modifier list has been improved to use QT and now includes a list search feature so that users can start typing to find the modifier they need. 
The Symmetry Modifier‘s default Mirror Axis is now X to better align with artist’s workflows.
STL import is now an impressive 10,000 times faster, and the STL Check modifier is 5000% times faster.
Auto Smooth is now at least 10% faster
The Material Modifier can now be used on splines without them being converted to a mesh. It can now also retain explicit normals when applied to a mesh. 
Spline Welding is improved 
Retriangulation for Edit Poly and Editable poly is improved as follows: The edit poly modifier now uses the new retriangulation algorithm introduced in Max 2023.2;  Editable Poly objects and the Edit Poly modifier now automatically retriangulate faces when a vertex, edge, or face is adjusted in a way that causes edges or hidden faces to cross; New faces that are generated when performing capping are no longer left unsmoothed. Instead, faces are assigned to a new smoothing group; The new traingulation algorithm is now used for face splitting by insertion of edges, Slice, Cut, Bridge, Vertex extrusion, and edge extrusion.
3ds Max 2024 ships with Substance 2.4.10 and Arnold 5.6.0.1

Causes:
Corruption during Arnold installation.
Solution:Uninstall and Reinstall the MaxtoA plugin:
In Windows, open the Control Panel > Programs and Features menu.
In the programs list, find the entry for the MAXtoA for 3ds Max plugin.
Right-click the MAXtoA entry > Uninstall.
Download the latest MaxtoA plugin for 3ds Max and install it again.
Note. Do not run any other programs or software during the install.

“Error in reading RSe Stream” when opening Inventor files

Issue:
The following message occurs when opening Inventor documents (drawing, presentation, assembly, or part): Error in reading RSe stream
Causes:
Inventor files may be considered a database collection of different files, read as a table or database of different entity types. Inventor only reads the information that is needed for the current task to reduces file read and write time. An RSe error indicates a problem with reading the database. 
Potential causes for this issue are:
Version compatibility.
Network latency.
Saving to external USB drives or a defective hard drive.
Interference from anti-virus software.
Insufficient privileges for user profile.
File corruption issue.
Interference from third party data mirroring or similar software.
VoidTools Everything (See Also).
Solution:
Depending on the root cause, there may be different solutions to this issue. Try the following suggestions:
Verify the file format of the Inventor document is compatible with the currently installed version of Inventor.
Right-click the file in Windows explorer and select iProperties.
In the Details tab, the Last update with field will reveal the file format (e.g. 2016, 2015, 2014, etc…).
In the Help (?) menu of Inventor, select About Inventor. The version of Inventor you are currently using (including service packs and updates) will be listed.
If the file is newer than the currently installed version of Inventor, updating to a newer version of Inventor will be necessary in order to open that specific file.
Note: Inventor documents are not backwards compatible with previous versions of Inventor. 
Try opening and skipping unresolved files or with different active View Representations:
In the Open dialog box, highlight the file and select Options.
In the File Open Options dialog, select a different View Representation. If there are file dependencies, try enabling the option to Skip all unresolved files.
An old version of the file can be restored from the OldVersions folder specified in the project file:
In the Open dialog, browse to the Oldversions directory.
Select corresponding file with the previous version extension (e.g. TestPart.001.ipt, TestPart.002.ipt)
Select Open.
Select the option “restore old version to current version” in the Open Version dialog.
Make sure User Account Control Settings are set to default position:
​Browse to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > User Accounts and select User Account Control Settings.
Lower the slider bar to the “”Notify me only when apps try to make changes to my computer (default)” position apply.
Restart the computer and retest.
Test while logged in with a brand new, local, administrator Windows User Account:
​Run the Rest utility while logged in with the problematic Windows user account.
Retest.
If the file is accessed from a network drive:
Test opening from the local hard drive temporarily until the cause of the network latency can be discovered and removed is advisable. Note that a similar error can appear during the save process. 
If a mapped network drives is used, it is recommended to use the Universal Naming Convention (UNC), e.g. \\computername\documents\subdirectory. Try updating to UNC paths in the active project (IPJ) file in Inventor.
Reviewing the network environment section in the help for reference.
Consider implementing a Data Management solution like Vault that will allow users to work from local hard drives while also storing data safely on a secured network server.
Make sure that the server is not an unpatched Windows Server 2008 R2 or older.  The lack of compatibility patches might be the issue.
Other potential conflicts include anti-virus software. Consult with the anti-virus program developer to properly configure the anti-virus software to function with Inventor.
Always perform any anti-virus or firewall changes at your own risk with your IT department involved. Some have reported that while testing, they temporarily disabled the firewall while writing over the network and it stopped the corruption of parts. They ultimately found that changing some of the anti-virus permissions led to no more corruptions. 
Note: ‘Old Versions To Keep On Save’ setting is available in the Options node of the Project file. The number of versions to be stored for each file can be set:
Expand Options in the Project Editor.
Right click on Old Versions To Keep On Save and select Edit.

Your Render Time (and How to Optimize)

General
To give you a quick example of why it’s faster to use a render farm, imagine that you have a frame that takes 30 seconds to render on your local machine and it takes 1 minute per frame on our farm. While you may have a faster render time, we simply have more machines to throw at the job.  In the time it takes your local machine to render 1 frame for 30 seconds, our farm could have up to 30 or more frames done in 1 minute.
The idea behind a render farm is to use multiple machines to render the job vs. rendering out one single frame quickly through your local machine. 
Additionally, you need to make sure that your scene is optimized.  If your scene is not optimized, it will take longer to render, and end up costing time and more money.
Tips on Lowering Your Render Times
All scenes are created differently, so there is not one magic answer.  However, there are some general tips that should apply to everyone.
Scene Optimization
Always prep your scene before uploading/submitting a render.  Maya has options to “Optimize the scene file” in order to remove unused or orphan nodes, etc.  Clean up your meshes, delete history, etc. This is just good practice for any scene file, but messy or cluttered scenes can have an impact on render times. Try to get that scene file size as small as possible before uploading.
Cloud Rendering vs Local Rendering
When you look at the frame times on your local machine and see the frame takes 5 minutes, it might be different once you render the same frame on the farm due to “overhead” that needs to take place.  When you render locally, you already have the scene file loaded and just hit “render.”
On the cloud, once a server gets assigned a frame it first needs to open the 3D application, load the scene file, load plugins, load scene assets, and then render the scene, write the image, and finally close the scene and close the application.  All of this is accountable render time which may drive the total time up. Normally the “overhead” is minimal and only adds a short period of time, up to about a minute.  But if you have a messy file, or large scene assets such as large texture files, then this time can add up. 
Light Maps
Having a light map (caches) is one of the best ways to lower the render time.  If you are using any sort of Indirect Lighting, then generating a light map locally will allow us to read from that file and avoid having to calculate the light bounces, thus saving you time and money. 
Differences in Animation frame times
If you submit an animation or test render and see your per frame render time averages around 5 min per frame, then that is what you should expect for the full animation, right?  If you have dramatic camera movement or other objects entering the frame later in the animation, then you can expect those times to go up or vary depending on how far along in the animation you are-especially when it comes to reflective, refractive or caustic materials/objects, etc.

MAXScript errors at 3ds Max startup
Issue
At 3ds Max startup, MAXScript may pop up the following error messages:
Compile error: Can’t find include file: $startupScripts\vrsceneexport.ms
In line include “$startupScripts\\vrscene.export.ms”
“$startupScripts\\vrayinstall.ms”
include "$startupScripts\\vrsceneexport.ms"
include "$startupScripts\\vrayutils.ms"
include "$startupscripts\\vraylightlister.ms"
include "$startupScripts\\vrvismatconvertor.ms"
The errors are usually due to leftover files from previous V-Ray installation or due to incorrect installation/uninstallation of the product.
Solution 1
A quick way to fix such errors is to reset 3ds Max settings to default by following the steps below.
Resetting 3ds Max settings affects all user-made UI customizations. It may also affect other plugins.
Close any running 3ds Max sessions.
Navigate to the following path:C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\
Open the folder for the current installation: i.e. 2020 – 64bit.
Rename the ENU folder to ENU_old.
With the launch of 3ds Max, a new ENU folder is created automatically, and the issue should be resolved. However, if the issue is not resolved, you can restore 3ds Max settings by removing the new ENU folder and renaming the ENU_old folder back to ENU.

Solution 2
Another solution is to locate the corrupted script and remove it from the 3ds Max startup folder.
Find the script-file-name either from the pop-up message or from the MAXScript Editor.  
Navigate to 3ds Max Startup folder: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max <Version>\scripts\Startup
Remove the script file.
Reinstall V-Ray.

Modo 16.1 released
Foundry has released Modo 16.1 with more than 21 feature additions and enhancements. This release also includes changes to the core that will set up future development for the application. Evidence of this in the new release includes a new decal workflow, updates to the Advanced viewport, the first iteration on new uber tools like Polyhaul and greater emphasis on curve-based workflows.

“{{‘ipmErrorText1’ | translate}}” message appears when launching an Autodes
Issue:
After starting up an Autodesk software, the following message window appears and the program becomes unresponsive, requiring ending via the Task Manager.
{{‘ipmErrorText1’ | translate}}
In some instances the software launches, however a timer is displayed on the top-right. If clicked, the same error dialog is displayed:
Causes:
Corrupted Windows User profile.
Missing updates.
Firewall.
Bad installation.
The system does not meet minimum system requirements.
Solution:
Verify the below items, testing the software after each:
Create a new Windows Admin user profile.
Check the Autodesk Account from the Software Coordinator if the license is assigned to the User.
Install the latest updates for Autodesk Single Sign On Component and Autodesk Licensing Service from the Desktop App or Autodesk Account.
Verify if any firewall is interfering with the below folders and included files:
C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Autodesk Shared
C:\Program Files (x86)\Autodesk\
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Autodesk Shared
C:\Users\**YOUR USERID**\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\
C:\Users\**YOUR USERID**\AppData\Local\Autodesk\
Run a Windows repair using the command “sfc /scannow”:
Open CMD (command) as administrator.
Type “sfc /scannow”.
Read the cbs.log and look for DIRSD OWNER WARNING and or Duplicate ownership for the directory.
If this is found or something similar C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs” is owned twice or has its security set twice go to the next step.
Right-click on the C: drive, and select Properties option.
Go to Sharing tab, and click on Advanced sharing. Provide administrator password if prompted.
Check box Share this folder option, and click on Permissions options.
Check box Full control under Allow option.
Click on Apply, and OK.
Restart the PC and attempt to open Autocad Product.

Adobe has released Substance 3D Stager 2. New features include the ability to create turntable animations, real-time rendering in render mode, USD export workflow, CAD import, New crash reporter workflows and more
