this is my first avery x reader headcanon request, and my first isle of armor x reader request in general! i hope i did it justice! ;;

he would absolutely demand to be the little spoon at all times

in day to day life, he has a lot on his shoulders - his family lineage and the expectations that come with that, his gym leader training and taking care of his pokémon, working on his psychic powers... he’s a busy, stressed, self conscious guy

(well, aren’t we all, really)

so, when he’s with you and you alone in the space he knows is most private - your bedroom - he really comes out of his shell

the first time you slept over, he was... uncomfortably formal about the way you’d sleep, actually

‘if it’s preferable to you, i’d like to present the idea that our sleeping arrangements should be decided upon by myself and my own judgement. though i’m certain you have your own nightly habits that i’ll allow you to carry out without issue, i would find it most appropriate if i were to-‘

‘um, avery,’ you interrupt, keeping your tone mild. ‘can you cut to the chase, please?’

avery falters a little, but gathers himself together again a moment later, pushing his silky hair behind his ears and his glasses up his nose

‘well then,’ he starts, looking unsure. ‘i’ve only heard this referenced by others, so forgive me if my phrasing is incorrect, but i would much prefer to be — is it called a ‘little spoon’?’

you stare at him for a moment as your brain tries to catch up to what has just left his mouth

‘oh,’ you eventually reply, still a little baffled. ‘yeah, that’s what it’s called.’ he looks at you expectantly. ‘oh! yes, avery, that, um — that’s fine with me.’

and here you are

wrapping yourself around a lanky ass guy who’s at least a few inches taller than yourself, trying to warm yourself back up from your quick trip to fill up your glass of water

he grumbles into his pillow, his pretty hair falling over his face and muffling the noise further

‘your feet are cold,’ he complains, but he doesn’t recoil; rather, he shuffles back into you — only minutely, but you still feel it. ‘move them away, please.’

‘can’t,’ you reply, pressing your nose between his shoulder blades. ‘i’m freezing. need to share heat. we’re like two little eiscues.’

‘i am not a penguin, and i am certainly not created to share heat,’ avery grumbles further, but you can both feel your hands warming up where they’re pressed against his skinny waist

‘hmm,’ you hum in response, snuggling closer

with this, avery finally gives in and begins to shuffle in your arms, arranging the pillows and the duvet until he’s just comfy enough

there’s a pause where he doesn’t let all the tension ebb from his body, though — just as you’re about to ask, he huffs a quiet sigh and leans back

with that, he finds your hand in seconds — those psychic powers are going to good use, you guess — and interlocks your fingers, pulling your arm across his waist to nestle it close to his chest

it rests there for a moment, but not long — after a second, he pulls your hand up to his mouth and gently, carefully kisses the back of your hand

you can’t help but giggle, and you know he heard it when you hear him huff a dramatic little sigh

‘i’m sorry! you’re just so cute.’

he huffs again. ‘i’m not cute. i’m romantic.’

when you peer over his shoulder, you can see the faintest smile playing at the corner of his mouth, and you can’t resist leaning in to kiss it away

to start out nice and light - i think avery would fall for someone who has a hobby they really enjoy, tbh!

like, it doesn’t matter if it’s reading or knitting or embroidery or singing or  eating ramen - as long as you have something, he would really enjoy sharing that experience with you (and he might even go out of his comfort zone to try it with you!)

kind of related, but i think he’d also like someone well-read - whether it’s in general in terms of literature, or whether it’s just on a specific topic

what i’m saying, basically, is that if you have a niche thing you’re very weirdly knowledgeable about - you’re a winner baby!

to delve a little deeper, i think he would obviously also be interested in someone understanding, empathetic, and good at listening and offering advice or even just kind words

i think he would also bond really closely with people who he has shared experiences with, even in the smallest of ways

he would also appreciate someone with the ability to actually get through his admittedly obnoxious persona who can see that he’s just as vulnerable as everyone else!

so - a patient partner is definitely key. his prissy, prickly act is just an act, but it’s also a defense mechanism for when he feels wronged or bad about himself - as long as you understand that, even if you’re strict when he acts out, he won’t mind at all

to be fair, i think he’d also really like someone a little blunt. is he being an arsehole for no reason? as long as you’re not, like, purposely humiliating him, keeping him in check is something he appreciates

i think avery would also like someone capable of taking the initiative and leading a little - in terms of the relationship in things like physical attention, but also in terms of, like, answering a phone call because he would rather pass away than speak to a stranger on the phone (understandable)

also, random, but i think he’d like someone who could braid his hair really well or who would be able to at least appreciate the massive amounts of effort he puts into things like his skin and his hair and his clothing

i think, of course, all of these things would really have avery falling for you - especially if you’re understanding about things that others might find pretentious (including his extensive 12 step night-time skincare routine)

he’s not the best at expressing himself, either, so you’ll know when he’s really fallen for you!

between how flustered he gets and how much he begins to struggle with looking you in the eye, he’ll also start to really take a lot more time to think about how he wants to articulate himself to you

he’d also be very attentive after he’s fallen in love, i think! little gifts and sudden expressions of kindness become a lot more day-to-day, since he very quickly comes to realise that he actually really wants to show you how much he cares

i think he’s also the type to be a little hesitant to actually let himself really love until he knows it’s reciprocated. he’s not necessarily more of a taker than a giver - he’s just particularly guarded

but once he knows you’re really, genuinely into him - not for his looks or his family name and links, but for him - that’s it. it’s over for him
