SOFT FASCINATIONS Dj set for film, performed by Jennifer Moore at the Unitarian Church, Stephens’ Green, Dublin; October 29th, 2017.
Soft Fascination is a term given by environmental psychologists Rachel and Stephen Kaplan to denote the mild, fascinating stimuli of the natural world, which inhabitants of the industrial metropolis often strive to encounter. It is a term found in their research into Attention Restoration Theory (A.R.T) and restorative environments, which investigate relationships between our bodies and the natural world, especially with regard to treatment of Directed Attention Fatigue.
‘Many of the fascinations afforded by the natural setting might be called soft fascination. Clouds, sunsets, scenery, the motion of the leaves in a breeze - such patterns readily hold the attention but often in an undramatic fashion. Some fascination is so powerful that one cannot at the same time think of anything else. Soft fascination, by contrast permits a more reflective mode.’
The notion of Soft Fasciation is the starting point for this observational film shot and edited by Jennifer Moore. All footage was shot in the outer and regions of two cities, Vancouver and Dublin. The accompanying dj set is comprised of works by artists based in Dublin and Vancouver, in continuing the idea that the spirit of both landscapes inevitably permeate the bodies moving through them, filtering quietly into all we make and do.
