I am SIIIIIICK of people calling Dragon a deadbeat father okay somehow even after the Kuma flashback got animated people are still spinning it like he's the worst dad in all of One Piece (which is CRAAZYYY btw when dads like Judge and Kaido are right fucking there)

If he could have done it without putting him at risk of being kidnapped, killed, or tortured (very likely all three) he sooooo very obviously would have chosen to raise Luffy himself!!! But he couldn't risk it like that!!!

And the only person he trusted enough to care for his son--who he knew wouldn't turn him in for being the son of the leader of the revolutionaries, and who wasn't involved with the Revolutionary Army and therefore could realistically keep him safe from the Marines--was Garp!!! Now did Garp actually do well with Luffy? FUCK NO!!!! BUT WHAT OTHER CHOICES DID HE HAAAAVE

And for the record (because I've been seeing this argument a lot lately) DRAGON WAS ALREADY!! LEADING THE REVOLUTIONARIES WHEN LUFFY WAS BORN!!! SO IT'S SIMPLE MATH COME ON PEOPLLEEEE

-Ohara was destroyed 20 years prior to the modern day, pre-timeskip (Robin was 8 when that happened, 28 when she joined Luffy)

-Dragon created the Revolutionary Army roughly a year after the Ohara incident, which puts that around 18-19 years prior to the modern day

-Luffy was 17 when the story begins, which means he was born a couple of years AFTER Dragon had already started and been leading the Revolutionaries; obviously we don't know anything about how it happened or with who and why exactly lol but he probably gave him to Garp within, like, a few months of him being born because I don't think Dragon would have wanted to risk having a baby around wherever the Revolutionaries were basing
