Sound Design and Foley
In the assignment for my masters degree, we were aiming to redesign sound and foley for scenes from the movie "The Forbidden Planet". We had to record everything from scratch.
We used household items like dryer and kettle to create atmospheric sounds. It worked like magic and sounded like a different planet.
For footsteps, we used different materials like metal board, normal floor, gravel for human footsteps, and even a combination of crumbled paper and pencils for deer footsteps.
Here's a link to the making video

Everything is one
For my project in The Art of Sound & Noise, I decided to get my hands dirty and go experimental. Coils, pliers, leads and what not.
Tumblr media
The main objective was to convert light to sound. A youtube video was projected to a solar panel, which picks up the fluctuations in electricity. This signal was circuited to a mixer using a TS cable. After amplifying the signals, the output was connected to a basic speaker. The resulting "noise" had an interesting pattern and rhythm to it.

A lot of challenges were faced, and hence, a lot of learnings were made.

The sound that we hear is actually from the bulb of the projector, and regardless of the video I play, the noise from the instrument is unique to the projector. A bigger projector with multiple bulbs would have picked up varied fluctuations of the video projection.
Regardless, it was a fun experiment, and I was glad my design actually worked.

Van drive.
My part time job involves driving a van at night. Unfortunately, this van doesn't have a music system, and I find myself working through a whole environment of sounds.
Through this soundscape, I attempted to recreate what I hear while working. All sounds you hear are recorded separately and carefully layered. I also keep switching between outside world and inside, to compare the variety of the "noises" that I hear.
In this journey, I used my mobile phone recorder to capture the sounds. The audio quality is surprisingly neat.
