Rant about Asian dramas
I don't normally post, and I'm fairly certain no one will read this, but I'm genuinely upset and need to vent. This is me mostly angry ranting about endings because I have no irl friends who watch Asian dramas or anything with subtitles so me ranting to them doesn’t help.
Ending spoilers for Untamed, Word of Honor, Love Between Fairy and Devil, Till the End of the Moon, and Miss the Dragon.
I’m new to asian dramas, only watching them for the past 1.5-ish years. In that time I’ve finished five, and dropped two cause I thought they were boring. Of the ones i’ve finished, one had a happy ending (Untamed), one had an ending that was sad enough they had to do a second ending for it which was less sad, but still sad if you think about it (WoH) one had a “happy” ending that was somehow unsatisfying (LBFaD), another had a straight up bad ending (TtEotM), and the most recent one I watched had a horrible ending that the characters tried too hard to think of as a good thing (MtD). And yes, this is the order in which I watched these shows. And yes, I thought all these shows were really good right up until the ending.
Don’t get me wrong. I don’t mind a sad ending. I’m more content with the first ending of WoH than the one where the two of them are trapped on a mountain together unable to eat anything but ice and snow. I know I’d rather be dead. So did Ye Baiye. And just because they are with the love of their life doesn’t mean anything. If I was trapped with only one person, I’d want to kill them.
Same with the ending of MtD. I mean, yay the dragon and the human are finally together and were not completely destroyed. Boo! They are trapped in a net with only the two of them for eternity. A net that is going to be used to hold back demons. Again. I don’t care how much I love a person, I’m going to kill them if I’m stuck with them.
Then they have the gall to act like it’s a sweet romantic ending. I mean, come on. That bird elf was trying waaaay to hard to make this sound like a good thing. A little too optimistic. There’s also the possibility that they might get pulled into actually fighting the demons the net is being used against. Which would suck. And if that’s not the case, instead they are flying together in slightly cloudy skies for eternity. She’d get bored and he’d get tired and unable to stop. If they are going to be trapped together like that, at least keep them trapped in the dream. Then they can have other experiences and go where they want.
TtEotM’s ending was . . . what? So he possessed the Devil Lord, got her to ascend to godhood so she could kill him. Then 500 years later she had a kid. Is the kid his? Is it a disciple? Is it him reborn? Why were they at the river? Was it supposed to be a teaser for another story? Was it her just reminiscing about the dragon god of war and the clam princess? Is it sad? Is it angsty? Is it even relevant?
Basically, if a story is going to have a sad ending. At least OWN it.
the next thing i'm watching is The Journey of Chong Zi. Mostly because I heard Jaing Cheng's actor is a devil or something.

All I want to do is complain about how I'm the only one who does the work around the house, I pay the bills, I wash the dishes, I earn the money, I cook the food, I clean the house because my housemates are lazy fucks.
Then I remember that I'm the only one in the house with thumbs and that I have no right to complain.

Rereading the Lord of the Rings series recently, and it's so fascinating to me how much the series is a denial of the typical juvenile power-fantasy that is associated with the fantasy genre.
Like, the power-fantasy is the temptation the Ring uses against people It tempts Boromir with becoming the "one true king" that could save his people with fantastic power. It tempts Sam with being the savior of Middle Earth and turning the ruin that is Mordor into a great garden. It tempts Gandalf and Galadriel with being the messianic figure of legend who brings salvation to Middle Earth and great glory to herself.
The things the Ring tempts people with are becoming the typical protagonists of fantasy stories that we expect to see. and over and over we see that accepting that role, that fantasy of being the benevolent all-powerful hero, is a bad thing. LotR is about how power, even power wielded with benevolent intent, is corrupting.
And its so fascinating how so much of modern fantasy buys into the very fantasy LotR denies. Most modern fantasy is about being that Heroic power-fantasy. About good amassing power to rival evil. But LotR dares not to. It dares to be honest that there is no world where anyone amasses that power and remains good.
I guess that's one of the reasons its so compelling.

If your entire villainous plot revolves around keeping things secret from everyone, even your second in command, why risk exposing it all and having your lead henchman realize you are the one who killed his father?

Captain’s log, number 197.
Well, it finally happened. They warned me it would when I took humans aboard, but I didn’t believe them.
The humans have threatened mutiny over an object they have pack-bonded with.
A few cycles ago, one of the humans placed … decorative items … what are they called? “googling eyes?” upon one of the maintanence drones. While against procedure, this seemed to be amusing to the humans and I let them have this bit of enrichment to their environment.
Last cycle another human, or perhaps the same one, I haven’t been able to get a clear answer on who did it, decided to expand upon this decoration with the addition of black bonding tape, cut into shapes the humans find very amusing.

In another cycle we will be docking at space-station 114-Hartnell for our annual maintanence and reguation-compliance inspection. I need not say how we must be reguation compliant in order to maintain our trade lisence with the alliance.
This would, of course, include that all maintanence drones are kept up to code. So I ordered the humans to remove the decorations.

Their reaction.
They named him.
It! I meant to say, they named it.
They stated, and I quote, “You will not touch one hair of Robert Floor-Buffington the third, captain, or there’ll be a problem!”
They’ve made up stories! Robert Floor-Buffington, he’s a humble, but hard working space bot, who just wants to do right for his a robot wife, and robot children!
It’s a maintanence drone! Identical to the hundred other maintanence drones we have on board.
But the humans they’re insane!
They just will not be moved on this issue.
… Maybe I can pursuade them to just ensure this Robert Floor-Buffington is kept out of the inspectors way. We have a hundred identical models, surely they won’t notice that one is missing?
***Log paused for incoming message***
Captains log addendum.
Perhaps the inspectors will not notice four maintanence drones are missing.
The humans have decided to decorate three other drones and have taken to referring to them as the “wife and two children of Robert-Floor Buffington the third.”
At this time, there is a heated debate occuring in storage bay three over what the names of this robot family will be.

Additional. I have over two-hundred days of shore-leave accrued. I think I’ll be making good use of that in the near future.
