i think that social media has resulted in a lot of people acting like feelings and thoughts have to submit to the logic of audience persuasion and goal-directed thinking to be worth expressing but these things are not inherently instrumental

WAIT. Not to be controversial but. What if I just enjoy life for what it is right now instead of stressing about what I’ve yet to get out of it. What if I choose to enjoy this time……I know that once it goes, I won’t get it back from anywhere

wrestling promos are so funny because theyre literally… promos, like, ads, but theyre also supposed to have like character- and story-advancing content, so theyre all just like a guy getting up in the camera and being like “DIRTBAG MIKE, YOU LISTEN TO ME NOW. WHEN I WAS EIGHT YEARS OLD I GOT ATTACKED BY A PACK OF RABID DOGS AND I LEARNED I CAN DO ANYTHING IT TAKES TO SURVIVE. I’M FUCKING CRAZY, DIRTBAG MIKE, AND I’M NOT AFRAID TO BITE YOUR NOSE OFF AND EAT IT. I’M GOING TO EAT YOUR FACE DIRTBAG MIKE AND I’M GONNA DO IT IN OMAHA NEBRASKA ON DECEMBER 3RD, 8PM, IN THE AT&T AMPHITHEATER SPONSORED BY GENERAL ELECTRIC. DIRTBAG MIKE YOURE GONNA REGRET WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT MY COUSIN T-BONE “TERMINATOR” TENNYSON WHEN I CUT YOUR FACE OFF AND EAT IT AT 8PM ON DECEMBER 3RD IN NEBRASKA”

I wanna make a podcast called “I Should Have a Podcast” where profoundly unfunny men pitch me their terrible podcast ideas and if they bring up serial killers or D&D, I get to taze them.

Children who feel they cannot engage their parents emotionally often try to strengthen their connection by playing whatever roles they believe their parents want them to. Although this may win them some fleeting approval, it doesn’t yield genuine emotional closeness. Emotionally disconnected parents don’t suddenly develop a capacity for empathy just because a child does something to please them.
People who lacked emotional engagement in childhood, men and women alike, often can’t believe that someone would want to have a relationship with them just because of who they are. They believe that if they want closeness, they must play a role that always puts the other person first.
— Lindsay C. Gibson, Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents: How to Heal from Distant, Rejecting, or Self-Involved Parents (2015)
