Shattered

Black as onyx and frigid as death.

Shivering, she willed herself to stay silent as the pounding of her heart became the soundtrack to her fear.

As her eyes tried in vain to claim anything beyond the dark, she caught the faintest sliver of light. She couldn't look away from that one infinitesimal ray as it cut through the emptiness surrounding her.

Suddenly her body was moving without consent, and that previous speck of light had expanded and was now covering a reflective surface.

Her vision was now making out a shape of something...no...someone.

Her heart raced, her breath hitched and she was now frozen in place.

A menacing figure now looked back at her with a sinister smile, lips currently forming words Serena could not hear.

Her brain screamed at her to run, but she could do nothing except watch in all encompassing terror.

Flowing ebony locks surrounded its ominous owner like serpents.

The dark queen advanced, and just as one perfectly manicured talon passed through the glass; a scream could be heard as it pierced the darkness and shattered the mirror.

Serena breathed so hard she thought her heart might stop, both tears of fright and relief intermingling in her shaking hands.

She knew it had only been a dream, but it had felt so horrifically real.

She pulled her trusty moon and stars blanket up around her body, just like when she was a kid. This favored piece of childhood nostalgia could always seem to protect her from the nightmares. She only prayed tonight would be no different.
