Pagan Holiday Ritual Template (Simple)

What is a ritual?

According to my definition and understanding, a ritual is simply a religious/spiritual celebration or the fancy word for a spiritual work. What makes it special is its structure and mixture of verbal and physical acts.

1.) Preparing the space

Both physical and spiritual cleaning should be done before a ritual. We are supposed to feel safe and relaxed in the place where we are going to perform a ritual. I believe it is pretty obvious how physical cleaning is performed (vacuuming the floor, wiping dust etc.). However, spiritual cleaning, that is cleansing is usually done by sprinkling some salt, or (salty) water or it is done by going around with an incense a.k.a smoke cleansing - my favourite. There are some other ways too, but these are the most common ones. The goal of cleansing is to remove any unwanted energies from the space. When it comes to my experience, since I perform my rituals at my home, I actually do not have a problem with negative energies but I still do the spiritual cleansing because it sets me in the mood for a ritual. If I am outdoors, however, then I usually leave some small offering for the natural world instead of cleansing, because I believe that the nature is actually pure in that sense.

2.) Self-cleansing

As we prepare our space, we also have to prepare ourselves for the ritual. This can be done by taking a shower or a bath, smoke cleansing, short meditation, short walk in nature etc. After this, we are supposed to be mentally and physically ready for what is to come.

3.) Drawing a sacred circle

Although this practice comes from Ceremonial Magic and Wicca, I like to use it as a part of my ritual structure. A sacred circle is supposed to be an energetic barrier, a ward that blocks unwanted energies and a place where wanted energies easily stay. From my point of view, a sacred circle is simply a border of my sacred space - as churches, mosques etc. have walls which determine a holy and special place in them, I have the sacred circle. The circle also reminds me on Stonehenge or a forest grove, so that is one reason more why I like to use it in my spiritual practice.

4.) Invocation

The word invocation comes from the Latin verb invocare, which means "to call on", "to beg for", "to cite". In this part deities, ancestors and the other beings could be invited to join the ritual. When I say "invite", I must say that so far I have never experienced anything supernatural (nor I have such expectations - at least not anymore) but this step is important for me because I believe that deities and ancestors are going to pay much more attention to me and to what I am going to say. I also like the gest of acknowledging that they are welcome in my sacred and special place.

5.) Celebration

This part of a ritual is what could be called a classic religious celebration. At this stage I usually firstly pray to the deities and my ancestors, then I put on some appropriate music, I contemplate about things that are related to the holiday I am celebrating, I do some divination etc. It is my favourite part of a ritual because it is the most informal - I can freely enjoy in all the beauty of my pagan path and practice.

6.) Feast

The Feast is a part of the ritual where food and drink is being consumed in deities' or someone else's honor. This is the time for the offerings.

7.) Closing

This is the end of a ritual. A farewell is bid to the deities, ancestors and the other beings, if they were called, and the sacred circle is being closed.

Note: This template is how I do my rituals. Not everyone's rituals must or should look like this - that is mostly why I wrote a lot of my thoughts and experiences, to maintain the subjectivity of this template. I hope some of you will find it useful for your spiritual/religious practice.

Полнолуние октября традиционно именуют Луной Охотника, Охотничьей Луной или Кровавой Луной. Вероятно, таким поименованием это полнолуние обязано тому, что в календарном цикле древних народов Европы в октябре, когда уже убран урожай, полным ходом шли заготовки на зиму всего того, чем еще был богат лес - дичь, пушнина, дикая птица. И грибы, конечно же :)

Наверное, поэтому современные язычники предпочитают в эту ночь проводить ритуалы в честь Рогатого Бога, Бога-Охотника, Херне, и просить у него сил и энергии достичь поставленных целей, добиться желаемого, преодолеть все невзгоды и запастись ресурсами. Кстати, а вы знали, что согласно легендам о Робин Гуде, его отцом вполне мог быть Херне-Охотник, Рогатый Дух Виндзорского Леса? ;)

В общем, в этом году Луна Охотника - вечером 24 октября, в среду, день Меркурия / Одина (Вотана), а значит - если вдруг у вас есть цель, которой вы всенепременно хотите достичь и за которой давно уже охотитесь, напишите ее на листке бумаги, зажгите свечу вечером в Ночь Охотничей Луны, и попросите Рогатого Бога помочь вам в достижении желаемого - вот увидите, Он непременно услышит вас ;)

11- The Bell Witch (American Folklore).

The Bell Witch Haunting is a traditional American folklore legend from Tennessee. As the story goes, a mysterious spirit tormented and haunted the Bell Family and surrounding area between 1817 and 1821. The story has become one of the most infamous hauntings in America, and has been retold in various books and movies, most recently a 2013 film. While many of the specifics of the story have been debated, and the conclusion as to what exactly was taking place has been adamantly contested, the Bell Witch has become an integral part of American folklore.

The legend revolves around John Bell Sr., his daughter Betsy, and her betrothed Joshua Gardner. The haunting began with a series of unexplainable apparitions of various dogs, birds, and other classic witch familiars that supposedly stalked and pursued members of the Bell family and their estate. This escalated into Betsy being singled out by the spirit, who would hit, pinch, and harass her in multiple ways, such as pulling her hair. The spirit increased in ability, and was able to communicate through disembodied speaking, telekinetic altering of the physical environment, shapeshifting, clairvoyance, and bilocation (being in multiple places at once, traveling great distances in short amounts of time). The Bell Witch as an entity has much in common with poltergeists, jinn, hobgoblins, and various other creatures and cryptids from world mythology and folklore.

The most comprehensive analysis of the haunting came in 1894 when Martin Ingram published the “Authenticated History of the Bell Witch”. While some critics have labeled this a fraud, others have viewed it as a thorough analysis of American folklore. In the book, Martin claimed that the haunting was perpetrated by a spirit named Kate, or “Old Kate Batts’ witch”. The haunting culminated with the Bell Witch poisoning John Bell Sr. After his death, the spirit continued to harass the mourners by loudly singing drinking songs throughout his funeral and procession.

The witch was seemingly distressed at the union between Betsy and Joshua. After the death of her father, Betsy called off the engagement, at which point the spirit informed the family that it was leaving. She returned again after 7 years, in 1828, however the family chose not to engage with it and she again disappeared. Descendants of the Bell Family, as well as new owners of the original Bell Farm, have continued to experience harassment from the supposed entity. One prophecy from the spirit said that she would return 107 years later in 1935. In 1934, neurologist and grandson of John Bell Jr, Charles Bailey Bell, retold his family’s legacy through his book “The Bell Witch: A Mysterious Spirit” in which he discussed the periodical recurrence of strange events and unexplainable phenomenon.

The Bell Witch haunting went from regional hysteria to a national attraction. Visitors from around the country went to investigate the occurrence, including Andrew Jackson,  whose men were supposedly terrified by the witch. Some have deduced that the spirit was the ghost of someone John Bell Sr. had murdered in North Carolina, while others connected the spirit to a Native American burial ground upon which the Bell Farm was built (various expeditions have been undertaken to find this, and it has never been proven). The legend continues to draw tourists to the area, and has influenced generations of folklore and paranormal portrayals, including the film franchises of Poltergeist, Paranormal Activity, and the Blair Witch Project. While there is no certainty as to exactly who, or what, the Bell Witch was, her harassment of the Bell Family has gone down as one of history’s most unexplained paranormal occurrences. While not a witch in the standard sense, the Bell Witch fits the archetype of spectral harassers that tormented victims and struck fear into the minds of hysterical townsfolk.

write a diary

literally

just write a diary, it has helped me sooo much and i dare say it has been the most developing thing i’ve done while learning french, nothing else compares

1. you’re exposed to the language daily

2. you quickly see which words are missing from your vocabulary

3. you learn to write about the things you think about a lot

4. learning to actually think in your target language

5. having to look up words and when reading the entry back a couple of days later you can’t even remember which words you didn’t know

6. going back to the earlier entries and seeing all the mistakes and knowing how much better you’ve become

7. when you’ve been writing for a few months and your target language becomes a natural way for expressing yourself

8. when you’ve been writing for a few months and you start seeing the diary writing as a way of self-expression and stressrelief, and the language learning aspect becomes natural and secondary

9. filling out a whole book using only your target language and physically seeing how much you’ve accomplished

Applying Lenormand techniques in Tarot can be quite fun and useful. The above spread is a way I have of getting to the bottom of a situation while also practicing my knighting paths. It’s called the “Knight’s Path,” because it’s a riff on the Lenormand technique of the same name, that follows the path of a knight on the chess board.
