i know you said you weren't a traditional dead dove fan, but do you think the age gap and power imbalance is integral to rhaelya's dynamic?
oh yes absolutely. even if at times i have issues with the way grrm handles age in these books, it’s very clear to me the power imbalance is integral. there’s a reason george puts lyanna very specifically at an age between girlhood and adulthood, ned even calls her “child-woman”, not one or the other. though i think they’d still work as a couple if she was older.
to me, the age gap is indicative of their vision of the world and of how disillusioned with society the characters are. i’d compare them to brienne and jaime and how they foil each other’s visions of knighthood, or even to sansa and sandor on that aspect. those two pairs of characters have even larger age gaps than r/l, (though brienne is an adult by real life standards) but the way they work as foils is similar to them, i think. rhaegar is disillusioned with his life, following what he thinks is his duty as the messiah until he meets lyanna, who listens to her heart in every decision. she embodies what he longs to be, what he thinks it’s impossible to be, but she teaches him that it’s always worth it to try anyways. and that aspect of their relationship is very compelling to me!
also my favorite aspect of a power imbalance relationship is when the person with the most power easily bends to the other one’s will and to me they’re like that so….

Essos Fashion Studies: Ghiscari Empire
The Green Grace of Astapor  - a noblewoman from Yunkai - Dany in Meereenese attire - One of the Great Masters of Meereen - a City Guard of Yunkai - a Slave Master
"Although little Ghiscari culture survived the Old Empire's collapse, the modern people of Slaver's Bay take great pride in their Ghiscari heritage, referring to themselves as "the sons of the harpy" or the "harpy's sons". The cities each use a harpy as their emblem, similar to Old Ghis. Where the harpy of Old Ghis grasps a thunderbolt in its talons, the harpy of Astapor has a chain with open manacles at either end hanging in its talons, and the harpy of Yunkai grasp a whip and an iron collar in its talons. Although Meereen also uses a harpy as their emblem, it is currently unknown what their harpy has in its talons. The Old Ghiscari tongue has been largely forgotten. Most modern Ghiscari speak in the language of their conquerors, High Valyrian. The dialects of Astapor and Yunkai contain a growl of the old Ghiscari tongue, whereas in Meereen they speak a bastard form of High Valyrian blended with Old Ghiscari tongue. The modern Ghiscari do continue to write with Ghiscari glyphs. Descending from the Ghiscari of old, most Astapori have amber skins, broad noses, dark eyes, and black or dark red hair, or a mixture of red and black hair which is distinctive to the ancient Ghiscari. Astapori warriors of noble birth oil and twist their hair into fantastic shapes like horns, wings, blades, and grasping hands, giving them a demonic look, while other Astapori men might only oil their hair and beard. In Yunkai and Meereen, other nobility oils and twists their hair into multiple shapes as well, using combs, wax, and irons.  The Yunkai'i wear tall helms in order to preserve the stylings. In all three of the slaver cities, freeborn men and women wear tokars, which is a sign of power, as the wearer is required to hold onto the fabric with one hand whilst wearing it.  The fringe on the tokar signifies a person's status."

it’s very silly how stannis dudebros try to make him this epitome of masculinity when in text he’s constantly described as lacking the virility his brothers possess and being shunned for it. part of why stannis nourished resentment towards renly is because he had to take over a motherly role after their parents’ death, which stannis saw (and robert too, which he’d later teach renly) as humiliating him further. i’ll even go further and say it’s a huge part of why renly doesn’t respect the succession line, in my opinion. because he sees stannis as lesser than him is a given, but the why of it is incredibly tangled to the role stannis provided him in his childhood.
it’s the implicit target of stannis’ bitterness when he says he “did his duty” in storm’s end. the underlying theme of why renly got their house’s ancient seat and stannis had to move to dragonstone. because he takes a feminine role within the fraternal dynamic of his family, a necessarily less deserving role. renly and robert form a subsystem inside their house that treats stannis like westeros treats women.
stannis’s story is also very much a gender story and i don’t think you can really get him without understanding how his relationship to being outside of westerosi masculine ideals shapes him.

the gender theme is very present in ASOIAF, especially comments on the oppression of women in a patriarchal society and the constricting gender roles present in the world GRRM crafted. many characters embody this commentary, especially ones like sam tarly and brienne (you should read this essay if you haven't already, it's inspired many of the points i'll talk about ahead). i'm making a case that this is also done subtly with rhaegar targaryen, which lends very easily to a genderqueer, specifically transfeminine, reading of the character.
of course we have to piece things other characters tell us secondhand about rhaegar together, and even these accounts are not entirely trustworthy for he was a very private person. people didn't know him, not even his closest friends.

rhaegar excelled in swordplay, but it's known this wasn't his true joy; this was the expectation the world had thrust upon him as the heir to the throne and the standard he tries to uphold since he read something in a book as a child, allegedly a prophecy. he actually loved his harp over his lance, a trait regarded in universe as feminine.

this not only paints rhaegar in a gender non-conforming light, but it shows how he puts the will of the prophecy above his own, becoming something he's not, a warrior, to fit the archetype. to be the prince of the prophecy means you must be a man:

this changes for a while after rhaegar meets lyanna stark, a lady who allegedly disguised herself as a knight, bent on escaping the expectations society has of her. all of this could be a post by itself, but to me it's clear why rhaegar would get so fixated on her of all people.
at last, a small detail: the closest you could ever get to understanding rhaegar is by his songs. it's said even when he's singing of, say, a dead family member who ran away for love dancing with her ghosts in a hall of kings, it sounds like he's singing about himself, but with female pronouns. which could mean nothing.

lyanna having a tiny crush on elia would be cute i think… as a ship it doesn’t make sense to me (elia would never think of her that way, that’s not even a possibility) but quiet pretty princess… lya would be like whatever you say…

the nature of asoiaf’s themes is such that having everyone be out and gay kind of undermines a lot of stuff…. sorry i don’t like every gay pairing with explicitly violent misogynist and/or homophobic characters
