AU: Aegon manages to escape from his coronation to Essos. He dyes his hair to blend in with the crowd, to not stand out.
Less than a year passes before he meets his older sister again. She stands before him in the flesh, dressed simply, looking so lost that everything seems like a dream to him.
Rhaenyra's world collapsed when her husband betrayed her, took the throne, and Jace died in a foolish incident with a horse, which doesn't seem accidental. The circle around her tightens, she finds it hard to sleep, eat, or to even breathe. As soon as she gets the opportunity — flees with her children to Essos, where Rhaenyra believes can find refuge.
Reunited, the brother and sister must make up for years of animosity. To everyone's surprise, they find much more in common than they would've liked.
Can the heirs to the throne reclaim what is rightfully theirs, now then they're united? Only with fire and blood.

TOM GLYNN-CARNEY INTERVIEWED BY HOLLYWOOD REPORTER MAGAZINE.
WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION TO READING THIS GRUESOME TURN OF EVENTS WHEN YOU FIRST LEARNED ABOUT IT?
"I knew it was coming."
"When it was coming, I wasn’t aware."
"But my immediate reaction was about how it came together by our amazing writers with this sort of amazing, theatrical, rousing, terrifying, unpredictable craftsmanship that I was very happy to be on the receiving end of."
FIRST LOOKING BACK ON EPISODE FOUR, WHILE IT SEEMED PRETTY OBVIOUS TO THE VIEWER, I'M WONDERING WHAT DO YOU THINK WAS GOING THROUGH AEGON'S MIND WHEN HE GOT ON SUNFYRE AND WENT CHARGING INTO THE BATTLE?
"He’d been a bit backed into a corner by all the things that have accumulated over time with being king, where his worst fears and insecurities were coming into plain sight and becoming true."
"He felt weak, and he was seen as weak, and kind of useless — with what Alicent (Olivia Cooke) had said to him (“Do nothing”) in his chamber, that was the straw that broke the camel’s back."
And he was just resigned: “I don’t have any option, I’ve got to prove myself in some way.”
"But you know, being the way he is, and not being an actual warrior with that sort of fearless courage that other people have, he had to numb himself and so he got blind drunk and jumped on a dragon."
HOW DO YOU THINK HE FELT ABOUT AEMOND'S BETRAYAL? IT SEEMED LIKE IT WAS CLEAR? I DID WONDER IF AEGON WAS TRULY SURPRISED...
"I think the moment of recognition was the fact that the fireball was coming at it."
"I don’t think he had time to think that he’s done this on purpose."
"If those thoughts are to come off, they will probably come later."
"As a viewer, I’m still unsure."
"I want people to make up their own minds."
THERE'S AN ARGUMENT TO BE MADE THAT SINCE THE BATTLE, AS DISASTROUS AS IT WAS, WAS EVENTUALLY WON, THAT HE SAVED THE DAY? AEGON THE HERO? OR NO.
"You’ve got to take them where you can get them."
"Yeah, he’s a hero."
WHAT'S THE PROSTHETIC PROCESS LIKE FOR YOU MOVING FORWARD?
"Long."
"Very detailed."
"I got to know my amazing hair and makeup team very well."
"I also got to know myself very well."
HOW DO YOU MEAN?
"The amount of time I was spending in that chair with those people in my own thoughts…. But yeah, [the prosthetics] really influences and informs my performance."
"It sort of instructs me how to move now."
"How you breathe, how you speak changes."
"I have a piece inside my mouth that I asked for to sort of distort my speech."
"So all this is great because it makes me feel like we’ve made a shift."
"Aegon has to have changed after this."
"We’re going to find a difference in him and and allow that to continue and [impact] his decisions and have a new approach to life."
YOU'VE MENTIONED CHANGING HOW HE MOVES. IN A PREVIOUS INTERVIEW YOU MENTIONED HOW AEGON USED TO MOVE DIFFERENTLY THAN YOU DO. WHAT WAS THAT DIFFERENCE?
"He’s a little bit more hunched."
"He is a bit narrower."
"I feel it’s a bit weak and more weaselly."
IS IT WEIRDLY MORE FUN TO PLAY HIM AS NOW? BECAUSE THIS IS GOING TO BE SO MUCH MORE THEATRICAL, IN A WAY.
"Yeah! It feels like we’ve transitioned from Richard II to Richard III, if that makes any sense to you."
"Almost like a level up — though on paper, obviously, it’s a level down."
"I think what he loses physically he gains emotionally and mentally."
"I’m trying to see it like that."
THERE'S OBVIOUSLY A PARALLEL THERE TO HOW VISERYS WAS AT THE END, INFIRM AND GHOULISH. DID THAT INFORM YOUR PROCESS AT ALL?
"I mean, it’s just fraught with danger, isn’t it?"
"Having a crown on your head."
"Something nasty is going to happen to you at some point."
"Isn’t it being not having my crown on yet?"
"There’s definitely a Viserys comparison, especially toward his final days and in bed."
"No quality of life whatsoever."
"It was only weeks, months before his dad was in that same position and in that same bed."
LET'S SAY HIS FATE WASN'T LITERALLY WRITTEN. WHAT, IDEALLY, WOULD YOU WANT FOR YOUR AEGON'S FATE?
"I want it to be, in an ideal world, for there to be an opportunity to prove himself and make decisions that he has made — not somebody else who thinks they know better."
"To carve out his own path as king."
"And then just see if he fucks it up as much as people think he might."
"I’d like to give him the space and the time to work it out."
"It’s a dangerous request because they could go horribly wrong."
"I think people underestimate him."
I FOUND IT INTERESTING THAT NOT ONE PERSON SAT BY HIS BEDSIDE OR HELD HIS HAND OR TRIED TO COMFORT HIM IN ANY WAY — AT LEAST NOT IN THIS EPISODE. SEEMS PRETTY HARSH.
"It’s desperately, desperately sad."
"Aegon is a boy in a man’s body and all he’s ever wanted is to be shown love and made to feel seen or not judged."
"All these things that he’s done in the past that have given him a reputation, I believe he’s felt that any attention is good attention."
"Unfortunately, he’s made a name for himself now — people kind of want to keep their distance and they see him as a poisoned chalice."
"At the end of the day, he’s a product of his history."
"He hasn’t had the emotional intelligence to be able to deal with that in a healthy way and move forward from it."
"Back then, therapy wasn’t really a thing, was it?"
"He’s been left to his own devices."

Alicent: One day, you'll be king.
8 years old Aegon, a visionary: Yes, I've been thinking about how to get rid of Laenor without being suspicious.
Alicent:... Excuse me?
Aegon: I already started planning mine and Rhaenyra’s wedding. I think golden is a good colour for the decoration, it'd match both Syrax and Sunfyre.
Alicent: Ae-
Aegon: Just to be sure, let's kill Harwin too.

rhaegon fic notes
on ch 3 of my rhaegon fic.
This was originally the end of chapter 2, but a comment on ao3 let me know that the Vale was ruled by a woman and that it was an important plot point so I had to change it:
"
All goodwill for her brother dissipated when she sat down for dinner.
“We heard you received letters from the young Prince Aegon,” Lord Arryn said.
His wife cut in, “Does that mean you intend to prolong your stay here? We can prepare more fitting quarters for you.”
Rhaenyra was rudely reminded of her place in the Seven Kingdoms. Of course. To the Arryns, the little Prince was learning how to read and write now, and it wouldn’t be long until he would learn how to be a proper King, in his proper place in the Red Keep. Unlike his sister, who traveled across the lands, seemingly looking for a new home to roost.
She felt the resentment burn up in her all over again, stoked anew.
"
However, I'm happy with the new rewrite. Maybe Rhaenyra doesn't need a heavy handed "your brother has a cock and you don't" moment right now to wish Aegon didn't exist. Maybe she only needs to experience Aegon being a brat to have the same sentiment, after all she's been an only child her whole life.
I also wanted to explore Alicent's motherhood after last night's episode. god, theyre making me want to scrap this and just write aligon, so many issues there. I imagine she was trying her best but she was still so young, and I wonder what Rhaenyra was like in those early days. If she could stomach her best friend now a mother.
I feel like Alicent has always had a hard time loving her firstborn, her most difficult child. He represents so many things, maybe the moment he was born was the moment it truly all felt wrong. Maybe she went through post-partum depression and did not know how to deal.
Rhaenyra feeding him to fire mirrored the violence in the first chapter where she almost killed him and it was nice to connect that thread. alicent's paranoid rhaenyra will kill him because rhaenyra's been doing crazy shit like this with aegon since day one lol.
however i feel like this time rhaenyra wasn't really serious and she was doing it more for alicent anyway, aegon's not really anything to her yet. and maybe this scene represents how deep down she instinctually accepts him as targ alrdy, bc she knows he won't burn that easily in the fire. i imagine daemon put her through similar dangerous acts. alicent had experienced rhaenyra's recklessness before, but now that she's part of the family, it's even crazier up close.
i also wanted to show how young they both were too. i mean aegon's not a toy but, rhaenyra playing around and pretending to drop him was childish.

rhaegon ch 3
Unfortunately for Alicent, Aegon loved his big sister.
An AU where Rhaenyra leaves shortly after the hunt to travel Westeros on Syrax. Her visits, now and then, are the brightest spots in Aegon's life.
ch 1
ch 2
Alicent has a meltdown after giving birth to Aegon. Rhaenyra helps. Sort of.
All goodwill for her brother dissipated when she returned to King’s Landing.
Through his letters, Aegon seemed respectful and almost sweet. Like he had grown. But she forgot that he was still a young prince, and the only one at that, spoiled in the heart of the Realm.
Aegon was throwing a tantrum. He was on the floor, screaming and crying, punching and kicking. There was a broken vase, water puddling on the floor, pillows thrown down with dirty footprints. His attendants warily tried to sweep away shards around him before he could hurt himself, but whenever he felt them move closer he only screamed louder. She saw Alicent in the shadows, lips pursed into a thin line, and it was as if she had never left.
Rhaenyra remembered their first truce right after Aegon was born. She had avoided Alicent and her father before. It was difficult to be around them but it was twice as painful for her to finally take in Alicent’s warm pregnant glow. In a twisted way her best friend did end up getting what she wanted, despite everything being too much too soon. If Rhaenyra denied everything hard enough, if she entered rooms sideways to block off views of her father next to Alicent, if she kept approving only gifts in Hightower greens for the Queen’s babe, if she walked the long way round to avoid her mother’s chambers, she could pretend Alicent had married off to some lord and was with child. That was how she coped.
She thought of that peculiar night. It was deep in the hour and Rhaenyra could still hear the babe wailing. This had been going on ever since it was born and she couldn’t understand why the nursemaids couldn’t just shut it up. Frustration overtook her and she barged into Alicent’s rooms. Even the guards seemed tired and let her pass.
To her surprise, Alicent was alone. The babe lay on the floor, wailing, crying, with his mother ten steps away, eyes blown wide. Her hair was undone, her nightgown drenched in sweat, Alicent was a mess. She wrung her hands like she did whenever Rhaenyra tried to rope her into one of her schemes, but this time her hangnails were picked through, her fingertips bloody red.
Rhaenyra sidestepped the babe on the floor to comfort her friend.
“He won’t stop,” Alicent said, her voice a strained whisper. “I’ve done everything, I’ve tried everything, he just won’t stop.”
“It’s okay, it’s okay, where are the nursemaids?” Rhaenyra asked. She could feel Alicent shaking under her hands. The tremors wracked through her body and made its way up to her shrill voice.
“I can’t do this, I can’t. I thought it would be over by now. He’s out, I’m done, I should be done, I did everything he wanted,” Alicent said.
Aegon let out another wail.
Alicent wrenched herself out of Rhaenyra’s arms and screamed at her child. She grabbed a candlestick and threw it on the floor, uncaring if it would hit her son. Rhaenyra gasped and crouched down to check on Aegon.
“Alicent, stop,” Rhaenyra said. This time more firmly, “Where are they?”
“I sent them off to bed, they can’t see me like this. I don’t want anyone to see him, I think there’s something wrong with him, Rhaenyra don’t, don’t let him get close to me. He needs to be blessed before the Seven but the King keeps pushing it off, there’s something wrong,” Alicent said. She gasped before trying to breathe through another sob.
“He won’t listen to me. I hold him, Rhaenyra, and I don’t feel anything,” she said. Alicent looked right at her, big brown eyes pleading.
And just like that Rhaenyra felt like they were girls again.
When she looked down at Aegon again all she could think about were the tears in her best friend’s eyes. This could go away. This could all go away.
Unthinking, guided by ghosts of a past long gone, Rhaenyra picked up Aegon and walked towards the hearth. She was always one for action while Alicent fretted. Rhaenyra crouched down and tilted Aegon towards the fire. She bounced him lightly and cooed at him, and for some reason Aegon quieted, entranced.
Rhaenyra knew she had to be the one to step into the dark, that Alicent’s hysterics would only be calmed after she’d had to yank her best friend through. Violet eyes looked up to catch dark brown ones, and she had the gall to wink.
Alicent felt bile rise up in the throat. That wink. That same wink Rhaenyra gave before she threw herself backwards off a cliff, only to fly up with Syrax moments later. Alicent felt her breath stutter when the flames licked a cruel shadow across her friend’s face, rendering her more dragon than girl. No, she thought. But it was too late, Rhaenyra had lowered Aegon enough into the hearth and her hands were unfurling his wraps.
She ran towards Rhaenyra, uncaring if the princess would fall into the fire, anything to knock her over, get Aegon out. But Rhaenyra was quicker, she always was, and a laugh bubbled up as she dodged Alicent, quickly tucking Aegon up to her chest again.
“See, you do care about him,” she said. She smiled at Alicent.
Aegon gurgled, reached up to play with Rhaenyra’s hair, oblivious to the danger he was in.
It was a cruel prank, but it was enough to shock Alicent out of her hysterics.
As if to soothe her, Rhaenyra ducked to nuzzle against Aegon’s little hand. Alicent staggered towards them and Rhaenyra welcomed her with her other arm. Aegon smiled up at his mother, warm and safe between the two. Rhaenyra felt Alicent’s breaths run ragged again, as it always did when she was about to cry, and she shushed her, pressed her foreheads together. Below, Aegon cooed and twisted their hair together, strands of brown entangled with white.
“Do not worry, Aegon will be fine. I will talk to my father tomorrow,” she said.
Alicent closed her eyes and whimpered. She nodded.
Rhaenyra helped the young mother and her babe back to their beds and bid them goodnight.
But, Rhaenyra supposed, that was then and this was now. Alicent had slightly been better with Aegon since then, but something about her firstborn still rendered her frozen at times. And Aegon was now old enough to pick up on his mother’s moods, which somehow always made his tantrums worse. He needed her to love him, but she thought she had already proved it that night years ago, and was too exhausted to prove it again and again. He could not ask this of her. She could not give any more.
Nowadays, Rhaenyra regretted not throwing him into the fire. Back then she wouldn’t, because he was Alicent’s child. It was easy to hide the tuft of blond hair under cloth and pretend. He was just a baby anyway. Rhaenyra was already ready to start stuffing her ears with cotton if that night hadn’t played out the way it did.
But now he was bigger and louder and so much more destructive. He had rifled through her bags without asking and wouldn’t stop touching her things. He was sticky and snotty and everything he handed her was sticky and snotty too. He was giving her a headache and today was the first day she’d gotten leave from him. She wondered if that was the cause of his tantrum.
No matter, he was much nicer in his letters, Rhaenyra decided.
Rhaenyra remembered being excited for Baelon, but even then she didn’t really know what it was like to have anyone younger than her around. She turned her nose up at Aegon, still flailing in his meltdown, she was sure she behaved well at that age. And with that, she gathered up her skirts, and left before anyone in the room could see her.

It really tires me how some fans try to make Aegon look like an asshole who doesn't give a shit about anything. This is a fundamental misunderstanding of his character as such. Of course he cares, that's literally the essence of his personality. He cares. He and Aemond both feel too much emotion, but if Aemond sublimates into self–improvement, trying to be strong, cold and detached, then Aegon is literally an open wound. I want to talk about this, also using Tom's interviews (yes, I think the actor's opinion is valid in this matter) and the few scenes that we have in the first season.
We know that Aegon didn't want the throne and wasn't ready to rule. The scene with Alicent, who explains to him the prospects for the future of their family, seems very traumatic to me. Imagine what it's like to know from your childhood that the lives of people close to you depend on you, on how strong you'll be. Such a burden can destroy anyone. You can't just ignore it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, we're shown how Aegon drinks on Driftmark. And that's a pretty sad sight - several cups in a row, wincing, as if taking a medicine that will help him to feel better.
Tumblr media
Actually, I like the theory that he gets drunk after Aemond says that Helaena is his future queen. Another reminder that he'll have to marry his own sister, for whom he has no feelings. And he drinks because he tries to numb his pain.
The same goes for his obviously unhealthy attitude towards sex - he uses it to numb his loneliness. I believe that Aegon literally didn't have the opportunity to feel what love is in any form. His father disliked him and showed it openly. His mother loved him, but she never knew how to express it the way he needed to. He was married to his sister (the tragedy for both of them) and it was a matter of duty, not feelings. At the time of the first season, Aegon is deeply unhappy and this is obvious. I have every reason to believe that his need for physical intimacy is based on the fact that this is the only form of love he can receive. Considering that Aegon is quite smart, I even think that he himself understands how ugly this form is, but there's nothing he can do. During the act, I guess in some unhealthy way it really saves him from loneliness, longing and the need to be loved, but in the end it makes him even more unhappy.
Then it's impossible not to remember the eighth episode and the famous:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's still clear that family is important to him. Yes, he feels like a stranger among his relatives, but it hurts him just because he cares. He cries and says "it will never be enough for you or father" because he wants it to be enough. He still loves them and wants them to love him back.
"What Aegon wants more than anything is to be told by his dad ‘I have faith in your capabilities as a young man. I see you bringing prosperity to King’s Landing.’ But he hasn’t said any of those things. His dad has completely ignored him, in fact, throughout his entire youth." (с) Tom Glynn-Carney for Esquire
Next, we can move on to episode nine and the fact that Aegon ran away. I've seen a lot of opinions that this is an indicator of selfishness and like...what? He was scared. This follows from the script:
Tumblr media
He was scared, he'd never leave his family, much less Sunfyre. It was a decision made in a panic when he realized that his father had died and the moment he had feared all his life had come - he needed to accept the crown to protect his family.
During the conversation in the carriage, we see that Aegon was really hurt that his father didn't love him:
Tumblr media
He even said "because he didn't like me" when talking about his father's attitude towards him. He didn't use the word "love" because it was obvious to him that his father didn't love him. He used the word "like", unknowingly emphasizing that he couldn't count on even simple sympathy.
He's also well aware that Viserys could have named him the heir, but didn't do so simply because he didn't want to and because of this, he - the eldest son, feels unworthy of the throne, and also completely lost.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Alicent tells him that Viserys wanted to make him the heir before his death, an emotional dam breaks inside him, it's literally written in the script:
Tumblr media
And at this moment, looking at the dagger, he's not even listening to Alicent, he's completely in his thoughts - maybe, at least for a second, his father cared about him. And when he asks his mother if she loves him, we see how much he craves love, how broken he really is, how important his family is to him.
I know this post is insanely long and I haven't even analyzed the various microexpressions in Tom's acting, but I'm really tired of people wanting to make Aegon something pure evil.
"I also see Aegon as being incredibly complex. He's not an out-and-out psychopath. I see a multilayered character that just has endless potential of pits of vulnerability and empathy and things that we don't see. I think it's his vulnerability that breeds the darkness. It's the way he copes, it's his security, it's his safety blanket, it's an addictive coping mechanism for him to shut things out and to be cold." (с) Tom Glynn-Carney for Entertainment Weekly
