“Ah you are right about that.” Cyrus acknowledged with a nod. “Sam is a good judge. He’s a sweet boy. Man. I still don’t think of him as grown. I always picture him as a spotty teenager. He’s lovely though.” He shrugged lightly. “But yes, Annick, is absolutely lovely. Will you be joining us for the holidays this year?”
Rhett smiled; he didn’t know Sam as a teenager, but he did know him when they were both younger. And happier. All he wanted for his brother in law was to find a way to be happy - he hoped that he would finally find a way to move forward without his sister.
“Mm, yes, Your Grace, I’m sure I will. I’m sure we’ll have plenty of events coming up. Vannes always gets wild this time of year,” Rhett assured him.

The flush was charming and after the stress of the last few months it was delightful to have something good happening. “Good. This person … is always welcome. Always. I hope you know that Rhett.” He assured and then let the subject drop. “I am quite well. I am still courting the lovely Annick. She is rather independent though. So we’ll see. But she makes me feel …. good. Very good.” He acknowledged with a nod, “I look forward to the holidays. I do enjoy the turn of the year.”
“Th-thank you, Your Grace,” Rhett replied, biting his lip. The Maine family had truly gone out of their way for him, and even in the face of him moving on, Cyrus was nothing but warm. “I think you need someone independent though. Imagine if you had to keep up with someone dependent right now on top of everything else?” There was so much going on in Vannes and things only seemed to be getting crazier. “I don’t know her really, but Sam likes her a lot and she makes you feel good, so... seems like a win to me.”

Lin shrugged. “You’re doing me a favor. I should have introduced myself sooner.” At the instruction, Lin nodded and walked the bike up the ramp into the back of Rhett’s truck. He was relieved that he’d have some time before he had to get back on the bike.
Rhett grabbed the ties from the back of his truck and secured the bike with the help of the other submissive. After getting the ramp folded back up, he got back in the truck, ready to get the other man to where he was supposed to go. “So, uh, you always drive that thing?” he asked out of curiosity once Lin got inside.

“Yeah? What if I want to see it all? Can we have a tour of the American South?” Sophie would happily let Rhett take her all around. She had never shied away from new experiences, but especially so when it meant as much to her as seeing where he came from did.
Each day Rhett meant more and more to her. It was both terrifying and exciting.
She was about to ask him something else when a waiter came over with a bottle of wine. Either he had no idea who she was, or he just didn’t care. Or maybe he knew and wanted to see if she would slip. Either way, it was beyond uncomfortable. Oh, how Sophie wished she could taste that wine. She could imagine how well it would compliment their meal and how the alcohol would warm her.
She wanted it, and that’s why she said no. She clenched her fists to ground herself and explained to the waiter that she wasn’t interested. Once he was gone she glanced at Rhett through her lashes. “Speaking of rough edges,” she tried to joke.
Rhett let out a little laugh, nodding his head lightly. “Of course, Miss. We can do anything you want,” he replied, smiling as his gaze settled on her. Warmth spread across his body; he was happy. Actually happy.
He looked up when the waiter came by with the bottle of wine, the smiles wiped from both of their faces. Rhett knew, of course. It didn’t take much googling to find out from the start, and of course they’d talked about in the dark when the rest of the world was completely forgotten.
Rhett wasn’t really sure what the proper etiquette was in such a nice restaurant. But, fuck it. Sophie was hurting and he wouldn’t have it.
Sliding out of his chair, he moved to kneel beside her, taking her hand in his. Though she tried to joke, Rhett didn’t laugh. Just gently squeezed her hand. “I don’t mind rough edges either, Miss,” he responding, letting his thumb slowly slid across her knuckles. “I’m pretty good with rough edges, actually.” He offered her a small smile as their fingers laced together.

It sounded like the perfect person had come along to help. He nodded his head. “Sure. Yes. That would be good,” Lin said, feeling the logistics of the plan were sound, even in his slightly frazzled mind. “Um…I’m Lin. Sorry.”
“I’m Rhett. What are you sorry for? You didn’t do anything wrong.” Rhett shrugged at the other submissive and offered up a small smile before he began getting to work. He lowered the tailgate of his truck and started to drag the ramp down. “You want to walk it up for me and hold it so I can get it strapped?” he asked once the ramp was in place.

“A nice day?” Cyrus blinked at that one. Was Rhett blushing? Actually blushing? He was astonished. “Well I am pleased you are having such a nice day Rhett. Well deserved. Perhaps the reason for your particularly nice day should join us for dinner some night?”
Rhett knew there was no getting with it. Cyrus was onto him and he wasn’t exactly being subtle. How could he be?
“Maybe for the holidays, Your Grace,” Rhett practically mumbled, his face turning a shade redder at his admission. “What about you? How’ve you been?” he quickly asked, desperate to turn the conversation around.

Sophie hated seeing and feeling Rhett stiffen up. She just wanted to give him a good night, a treat, but she kept messing it up. She was bad at dating when it was someone she had fallen for, apparently.
Just add that to the list of things she wasn’t great at.
“You’re welcome. Thanks for doing this. I’m just glad we’re together. We don’t have to come back here ever again if you don’t want. I do think you’ll enjoy the food though.” She grinned and continued to draw her toe along his leg. The contact with him was good. “You’re doing great. So good for me, as always. Maybe someday you can take me to Louisiana. I’d like to see where you come from.” Contrary to what some people might think or say about her, Sophie wasn’t picky or high-maintenance. She would love to see the small places he loved.
“No, I want to do the things you like to do,” Rhett insisted, leaning forward a little bit on the table. “I’m just... rough around the edges still.” He started to tell her that Maeva had been working on polishing him since the day she met him, but he was tentative about bringing up his dead domme around Sophie. They were still in new, uncharted territory.
“I don’t think you would, Miss,” he said with a soft smile. “Not because you’re nobility and an actress and all that - just because I don’t think anyone would want to see it. Plus, there’s nothing there for me anyway. My old man’s got to be dead by now.”

Lin considered the other man’s words. He hadn’t even thought about how he was going to continue on his way. But with his hands shaking as they were, his heart still leaping in his chest, he knew it wouldn’t be a responsible choice to get back on his bike. “Maybe…are you going in the direction of the university? I wouldn’t want you to go out of your way.”
Rhett nodded. “Yeah, my work site is only a few blocks away from it. I’ve still got a ramp in the bed of my truck from hauling around shit from work. Tie downs too. If you want to get your bike loaded in the back. That way you don’t have to leave it on the side of the road...”

sophia-clementine-ofanjou:
Inwardly, there was a part of Sophie that regretted suggesting the restaurant she and Rhett sat in. She didn’t like seeing him uncomfortable. She had only wanted to treat him to something especially nice and could only hope that he didn’t decide he didn’t want to go on more dates with her after that.
Her internal dialogue was taking up most of her headspace, so she wasn’t paying a bunch of attention to the menu itself until Rhett spoke. “Oh? I could do that. I don’t think you’d like the carpaccio.” She lowered her menu so that she could look at Rhett. God, he looked good. She smiled across the table at him before finding his leg with her toe beneath the table and rubbing gently.
“Let me order for you, Sweetheart. I promise I’ll choose something good.” She sipped from her water before looking back at her menu. When the waiter reappeared to take their orders, she let her gaze linger on Rhett as she spoke.
“I’ll have the ricotta ravioli with caviar and smoked butter and he’ll take the wagyu steak over wild mushroom ragout with marbled potatoes. We’ll have whatever appetizers and accompanying dishes the chef suggests with our main courses.”
Rhett relaxed as he felt Sophie’s foot gently rubbing against him. “Mm, alright, Miss. I trust you.” He settled and cast a small smile her way, though when she chose the steak for him, he stiffened up all over again. He’d seen how much that cost. It wasn’t like he was broke, and it also wasn’t like there were much cheaper options at this place, but paying well over a hundred euro for a steak felt... silly.
Still, he was determined to enjoy this night with Sophie. She’d wanted them to have a special date night and he was going to give it to her one way or another. “Thank you,” Rhett said softly once the waiter was gone, offering her another small smile. “I’m, uh - I’m useless at places like these. I’m better than I used to be, but I’m still from a tiny place in Louisiana. Don’t think it’ll ever get it out of me.”

Did his eyes deceive him? Was that a smile? A genuine smile? He wasn’t sure he had seen such an expression on the handsome submissive’s face in years. After a terrible week, it was something wonderful. He needed something wonderful.
“It is good to see you as well Rhett.” He reached up a hand and lightly tapped his fingertips on Rhett’s cheek. “What’s this? Hmm? A smile I see. I think someone has something to tell me. There is only one thing that makes a man smile like that.”
Rhett couldn’t help but a feel a little subconscious at Cyrus’s reaction. Was him smiling really such a big deal? “I, uh, don’t know what you mean, Your Grace,” he replied, feeling a flush bloom on his cheeks. “It’s just a nice day. That’s all.”

Rhett smiled when Cyrus joined him outside. It’d been a long time since he’d seen the Duke; with so much swirling, they’d both been busy.
“It’s good to see you, Your Grace,” he greeted, his smile widening. “I hope the past few weeks haven’t been too hard on you. Or if they have, let’s hope you have a good break coming up soon.”

Rhett wasn’t sure why he’d suddenly become nervous. Even if this was their first public date, it wasn’t like he hadn’t been spending nearly every waking moment of free time with Sophie.
It wasn’t that he was unsure or even regretting his decision. He just felt like an imposter in nice places like this; always had. Rhett swore he could feel the leering glare of the waiters, scrutinizing every move he was making. He’d already had his glass of tea unceremoniously moved to the correct place on the table. Had it really been so long that he’d forgotten all of the rules of places like this?
“Okay, so - I guess I’ll get smoked duck since I know what that is,” Rhett commented aloud, looking over at Sophie. “I’m tempted just to have you order for me, Miss. You know what I like and I don’t know what most of these words even are. Jerked Beef car - pit - zee - o... I don’t think I want to know what that is.”
