Although the beliefs and history of fraternities and sororities are unique and tell a different story as to who the organization is as a whole, there can always be a commonality that unites each and every greek lettered organization. Whether it is a historically black organization, a predominantly white, or anything in between, one thing is for sure, giving back to the community is a universal ideal that is embodied by many of the organizations.

The Importance
Community Service is important for many reasons. Taking part and volunteering teaches compassion and understanding. One of my favorite things about community service is that there are opportunities and choices right in your very neighborhood. You can volunteer for something you really believe and have an interest in, and can volunteer as much or as little as you'd like or have time for.

Voting. A word defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as “an expression of opinion or preference.” A concept well known by all Americans, as it should, considering our many things about this country are decided by elections. President, judges, mayors and governors are all voted upon by the general population; and if not, they are decided by elected officials.
Considering how much of our countries government revolves around voting and elections, wouldn’t it make sense for Americans to make their opinions heard through ballots?
Interestingly enough, that isn’t what is happening today. The 2008 US Census Bureau says that only 63% of all people registered to vote did. That doesn’t seem that bad, until you realize that only 72% of America is even registered to vote. In reality, only 45% of America is even voting in these elections, even though they could determine the fate of the country.
The lovely ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha spent the day registering different individuals in the community to vote because having your boice heard is a topic that reaches everyone. Giving a voice to people who did not always have a chance to voice their opinions is a great way to help the community in an effore to increase those voting percentages.

I have met people of all different backgrounds not only from joing a BGLO but also through working in the community to create a better life for those around me. I truly do love making a difference in someone else's life, even if it is a relatively small one, and community service has helped me accomplish this. To help advocate for thos without a voice, to help put someone in a better position than they were the day before is something that I love to

I think you should want to do community service just based off the pure concept of helping someone who may need it. It is important to me because I love to help people, and rallying people together to help

Community Service can be an exhilerating experience, for example, the Nu Eta chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. put on an event called “Train Like an Alpha”. This event was utilized to raise money and awareness for the March of Dimes service project. The March of Dimes and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. began collaboratively implementing Project Alpha in 1980. Designed to provide young men with current and accurate information about teen pregnancy prevention, Project Alpha consists of a series of workshops and informational sessions conducted by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity brothers. The three goals of Project Alpha programs are, sharing knowledge by combating ignorance and fear with factual information changing attitudes by providing motivation toward positive changes in sexual behavior providing Skills by creating a sense of empowerment and self-esteem.

For us, [community service] isn't just a planned and publicized event, we also do small things like helping people move into their house or raking someone's yard because they are physically unable such as the elderly.

“Community service is a huge aspect of Greek life especially black Greek since their founding purpose is to be asset to the African American community. For a BGLO to lose sight of its commitment to service means that it has also lost its purpose. My chapter specifically has had some of the most influential civil rights activist in Memphis such as Benjamin Hooks. Recently, we just got finished our theatre and mentoring program as part of a partnership with non-profit organization”

It is defined as voluntary work intended to help people in a particular areas that an individual my reside near, but it does not always have to be back breaking work. Things such as hosting an event in order to raise money not only money but also awareness for a cause can also be seen as a form of community service.
