if you bring flowers, make sure they’re already in a vase.

if you bring wine, it stays, opened or not.

hosts are usually underfed. bring a little something just for her. a croissant, a coffee, anything.

don’t show up early unless you’re being useful. lighting candles = useful. waiting around the house = not

stay off your phone entirely. if you must check it, excuse yourself quietly.

tend to the room energetically. if someone’s being left out, invite them in. make outsiders feel welcome.

compliment the invisible effort. the way the napkins were folded, the playlist, the glassware.

if you loved one of the host’s dishes, ask for the recipe. highest form of flattery.

always make conversation with the children. “how old are you?” is boring. ask their favorite dinosaur or snack combo.

don’t be the one to gossip. bring good energy.

say a proper goodbye to everyone in the room.

i love the feeling of getting “clearer” as you get older, like with each year there’s less room for messing around or pretending or playing a game with something you know deep in your heart is not right for you. it’s like your brain just gets better and better at cutting you off as you consider something and tells you “no that is not for me” before you can jump in. and it’s not as if things get more serious, but the opposite. you have freedom in giving yourself more and more permission to purposefully live life and go after whatever you want and to love freely knowing that things are secure in your heart and mind.. at least when i am struggling i know that the “clearing” is really what’s happening
