“How often do you think you might look up at the stars and wonder what might have been had you just put your faith in Rick?“
I wonder if Birdperson was also talking about himself here.

This episode answered a lot of questions about Rick's behavior, such as:
Why he flips out every time he thinks Morty's going to abandon him and tries to control his family's every move
Why he craves his family's affection and approval despite keeping them at an arm's length
Why he acts cold and aloof but gets emotional at the most random moments, like when he had to kill Pencilvester
Why he's so resistant to making friends with anyone besides Bird Person
Why he showed up on Beth's doorstep after disappearing for decades (apparently he's not the one who left in the first place)
Why it's so easy for him to jump to other universes and leave his "original" family behind--none of them are his original family, not even Morty.
This doesn't answer everything and raises a lot of other questions, but at least we're getting some explanation for the way Rick acts the way he does. Damn, what a great episode.

I always knew Rick was a bisexual slut but it's awesome to find out that he was legit straight up in love with his best friend and battle buddy, Bird Person.

If Rick's Beth died when she was young, then imagine Rick when he first started going to alternative timelines. Imagine what he felt when he laid eyes on a Summer and Morty for the first time, and realized he lost more than he ever knew.

SPOILER ALERT FOR THE LATEST R&M EPISODE
So the latest episode brought in some heavy canon and now we know for sure that Rick did indeed lose his original family, right?
Now, there are many people wondering why Rick is so distant, cruel and generally an asshole towards his current family, or rather the current version of it, and I feel like there is an answer blended into the episode.
You see, at the begining, when BP and Rick met at that festival, Rick appears to have just lost his family, and very likely, as is apparent by the next scene, it was done by a bunch of old Ricks. At this point, Rick is just keeping himself high, seeks revenge and resents the thought of ever being "one of the creeps that lives with an alternate version of our dead daughter".
And he has a good reason to feel that way. Several good reasons, actually, so instead of doing it too (at least at first) he forges a new relationship, a relationship he thinks might just last. A relationship with Birdperson, which he tries to move further at Blood Ridge. But his feelings are rejected, and now he's alone again. It's not like you'd want to hang out with the person who just rejected you all day long, right?
So he gets desperate, and he does what he resented even the faintest idea of at first, he gets a new family. This can be proven by another young version of Rick in Squanchy's stand-up phase memory. Now this Rick is wearing a shirt and a labcoat. A neat shirt and a labcoat. Why would he wear that if he just hung out with BP and Squanchy all day? Not only that, he looks so happy in that shot, too. Like a man who has his fmaily back, but is soon to lose it, because you know what his outfit looks like. That's right, exactly like the outfit of the Rick from s3e1. And you might say "But Rick said that that memory was fake" and I say ok, it was, but what if it was a memory made of other memories? We know that Rick had a portal gun before this age, so why would he need to develop a formula at this point? I say he put it up for show, but did lose his family. Again.
But he went on, because we see yet another, older Rick, back on BP's wall in a frame with a baby Morty. Perhaps it was a younger Rick who just got a glimpse of what he was losing (visited a version of his grandson, took a picture with him) and later decided to try to do the family thing himself. Either way, the point is, it doesn't last. Because he loses them. Again.
This we know since season one, as it is revealed to us that Rick came back to Beth after 20 damn years. Until then, who knows how many Beths, how many Smiths he went through. How many other relationships he had ruined (shout out to Kyle," or whatever his name was", whom was mentioned by Nimbus) and keeps on ruining to this day.
So why care? He asks himself. Why care if he's just going to lose them again and again and again? But the problem is- that he cares. And he knows it. So he tries not to. So he drinks, does drugs, has wild sex with a hivemind and thousands of people across the galaxy just to numb the pain and fear, fear that he's going to lose them again. And yes, he pushes them away by being an asshole, but he'd rather do that, lose them on his own terms and move on to another than give them the leverage of his genuine affection because he's afraid.
He's an old, broken man that has been denying himself the thing he desires the most because he is too afraid to have it. Family. Love. Happiness.
He'd rather never have the real thing again because no matter what he does it always was, is and will be the same. Again... And again... And again.

Gentle reminder that Rick Sanchez, planet curious, walking disaster, hopeless romantic, is pansexual and have always been. This was confirmed by the creators and it has always been the way he was written. So if you want to celebrate his queerness, don’t forget the label.

Rick's boyhood room looks amazing--the perfect place for a child genius. It's so sad to think about what that seemingly happy boy ultimately became.

Don’t get me wrong, Bird Person is in no way obligated to return Rick’s feelings in the slightest, but I felt so bad for Rick when he got rejected, and in a pretty callous way to boot; Bird Person didn’t have to say Rick was trying to compromise his integrity. Rick doesn’t open himself up to be completely vulnerable with people he loves, and we just witnessed one of the reasons why.

It's all starting to make sense now--why Rick tried to control every aspect of his family's lives, and why he flips his shit every time Morty starts to get a life outside of their adventures. He's terrified of his family leaving him. I used to wonder where Rick went when he (apparently) left the family in "The Vat of Acid Episode," but now it's obvious that he was probably off drowning himself in alcohol. When Morty rejects him, he either loses his mind or frantically latches onto Summer as a replacement.
Man, you know it's a great twist when it makes you rethink the entire series.
