hot take i guess, but I always get sad when ppl just completely erase Kingsley from the M9 and are like “nope, he came back as Molly, no Kingsley here”. It kinda just ignores what Tali was going for with the character, and it just makes me sad cuz King is SUCH an interesting character for his sheer potential!

It really is like. Not trying to start a fucked-up-backstory-Olympics within the Mighty Nein, but I think people wildly underestimate or have forgotten the sheer fucked-up-ness of Veth's backstory. Like, she was ruthlessly bullied her entire childhood by the entire town and her own brothers (with no notable involvement of the parents to put a stop to it--perhaps they weren't terribly involved in their children's lives? What, then, can we extrapolate about them as parents?). This type of bullying included holding her under water for as long as possible without killing her and locking her in wardrobes for untold periods of time until she learned to lock pick her way out. She finally gets married, has a kid, escapes her brother's abuse but she is extremely timid. Then they get kidnapped by goblins where they all remain in captivity of WEEKS until she can unlock their cage and make a run for it. Yeza tells her to "put her brave face on." she sends him and Luc on ahead to make sure no one follows them, kills one of the goblins, and her punishment is to be dropped at the feet of a hag and drowned in a river, then reincarnated in a body she hates, forced to live in a society that tried to kill her and her family. She lives for an unknown period of time as a chained slave, forced to participate in the torture of innocent people, presumably some of whom are from her own community. When she does finally escape, she tries to go back to Felderwin and Yeza calls her a monster and he and others chase her out of town, which drives her to alcoholism.

Fjord being stopped by another half-orc and told, for the first time in his life, that he doesn’t have to make himself small and palatable - his orc blood isn’t something to be ashamed of.

Nott buying herself a dress and taking off her mask and wrappings, because to be a goblin here isn’t odd or strange.

Caleb shaving his beard and unwrapping his arms, because he no longer has to fear being identified as the insane ex-prodigy of the Cerberus Assembly.

Xhorhas as a haven for this eclectic group of scarred and distrusting people, because they have the full support and favor and protection of the ruler, and they don’t have to walk on eggshells through every conversation or continuously look over their shoulders whenever they’re around other people.
