Title/Subject: Robin
Method: Digital painting
Month of completion/latest editing: December 2019
Description: I have been working on an original story of mine for about the past year, and much of that process has been spent on creating characters and backstories for said characters. The whole thing started with me wanting to create an original character for the video game Final Fantasy XII, but it escalated into me not only creating an original character, but an original world as well. There is still much to do in the way of fleshing out the world and the story, but I have found drawing my own original characters to be very fulfilling and beneficial to the rest of the creative process. This particular digital drawing features Robin, the main protagonist of the story. His appearance is not modeled on anyone in particular, though I did draw some inspiration from different Final Fantasy character designs, fantasy designs (particularly in the way of peasant attire), as well as Queen’s Roger Taylor (mostly the eyes). My future goal is to flesh out the character design even more, adding possible details to his attire and physical features.
Character backstory and personality: Robin is a 21-year old man, who was born into an ancient, highborn family in the kingdom of Ethos. His father served as the military leader of the country, and Robin was in the process of training to one day take his place. However, when Ethos was suddenly attacked and taken over by the neighboring land of Morium, Robin’s father was killed. This resulted in Robin fleeing the land to the outskirts of Ethos, covered with empty deserts and abandoned beaches. He spends some time alone, surviving off of the land and trying to figure out his best move. His best bet is to track down the crown prince of Morium, as the two of them were childhood friends. Robin hopes to be able to convince the prince to pardon him, though deep down he’d much rather seek revenge. On his wanderings, he runs into many different people, including none other than the prince of Morium, who had, for some reason, decided to flee from his family after their invasion on Ethos.
Personality-wise, Robin is quite temperamental. Due to his recent experiences, he has become increasingly suspicious of everyone he meets. Because of his isolation, his social skills are severely lacking, and he has a bit of a quick temper. He is, however, rather good at reading people, and manipulating them to get what he needs to survive (ex. wanting to manipulate the prince to be pardoned). Despite all this, Robin is, deep down, a good person who wants to overcome his trauma and find a new purpose in the quickly changing world.

Title/Subject: The Sending
Method: Digital painting
Month of completion/latest editing: January 2020
Description: Final Fantasy X is without a doubt my favorite video game, and has been ever since I was a child. I have always been inspired by the story, and particularly by the character and world designs of the game. This scene that I decided to draw is one of the most beautiful moments of the game, with a very versatile color scheme. I wanted to recreate it as well as possible, and I think this is one of the pieces that I’m most proud of. I began by sketching out the lines of each object, looking at the original photo for reference throughout the process. After this, I colored in the basic shades, and then begun the long process of adding in the additional shading and different color tones. As Final Fantasy X is a big part of why I want to be a video game artist, I thought it’d be fitting for me to include at least one piece inspired by the game.

Title/Subject: Roger Taylor (A Study)
Method: Digital painting
Month of completion/latest editing: January 2020
Description: Many of my portfolio pieces feature members of Queen, and particular Roger Taylor. This is because the band is a great source of inspiration for me, and I do most of my best work when listening to Queen’s music. Roger Taylor is my favorite musician, and he has also been a big source of inspiration for my drawing. I have been working to improve my ability to draw realistic-looking people, and drawing the same subject (Roger) multiple times at different time periods has helped me greatly. I’ve been able to identify what I’ve improved at (for example, general facial expressions, shading around eyes and whatnot), and what I still need to work on (nose, jawline etc). This drawing of Roger is one of my most recent pieces, and I believe I have improved over these months of digital drawing. The image used as inspiration was black and white, so the colorization is done without reference. In addition, I decided to alter the facial expression to deviate from the original photo.

Title/Subject: Character Roster (Original Story)
Method: Hand-drawn sketch + Digital drawing/painting/shading
Month of completion/latest editing: January 2020
Description: Like my drawing of Robin, this piece is directly connected to my original story. The characters featured are some of the essential characters of the story, and the ones I’ve decided on clear looks for as of now. I did the original piece hand-drawn, as can be seen below. As with some of my other pieces, I wanted to flesh this one out by coloring and shading it digitally. This was particularly important for me with this piece, as I was eager to decide on different hair colors, skin shades and whatnot, and the digital color palette offers much variety when it comes to this. While there is still much to be decided when it comes to these characters, these sketches have helped me develop their stories and personalities. One thing to note about the story’s reflection on the character appearances is the fact that in the lands of Morium, Ethos and Ascana, having long hair is considered to be the norm. Men, women, children, everyone is expected to have hair that is shoulder-length or longer.
Character descriptions: Robin: The main protagonist - the son of the military leader of the land of Ethos. He’s on the run from the usurpers, and makes some unlikely allies. Hadrien: The crown prince of the usurping country - Morium. He discovers the corrupt motives of his family, and flees with the help of some friends. Rhydian: The court magician of Ethos, who decides to help Hadrien escape as he, too, wants to flee the usurped court. Amalia: A former female slave of Ethos, who used the usurping as a distraction to flee - only to run into Robin not much later. Athena: A priestess of Ascana - the impartial land tasked with maintaining harmony between Ethos and Ascana. She infiltrated the main party later on in the story, pretending to be a commoner. Rodney: The son of the former royal chef of Ethos. He flees the castle with Rhydian and Hadrien. Sati: A warrior from the land of Ethana - which was invaded by Ethos. She seeks vengeance for what happened to her people. Constance: The high priestess of Ascana, the one who is essentially in charge of everything. Her hair is short to showcase her superiority over others - even royalty.

Title/Subject: Cinderella’s Slipper
Method: Hand-drawn sketch
Month of completion/latest editing: December 2019
Description: I wanted to practice my proper life-drawing skills, and decided to draw this Christmas ornament I own. I chose it because of the interesting design and the very versatile color scheme. I began the process by hand-drawing the shoe, and finished with coloring it digitally. The coloring with this piece is rather simplistic, but I believe it fits the tone of the sketch overall.

Title/Subject: Rami Malek’s Freddie Mercury
Method: Digital painting
Month of completion/latest editing: July 2019
Description: This drawing was my very first attempt at digital drawing, and it was also the most detailed finished piece I’ve made so far. With this painting, I wanted to make every little detail as realistic as possible, as I considered it good practice for my then-untested digital art skills. Though not 100% accurate by any means, I believe this is still a very good first attempt at painting digitally, and it was a wonderful stepping stone for me to move into different, more free form pieces I’ve done since July. The photo I used as reference was from a book rather than found online, so some of the shading and little details were more difficult to recreate.

Title/Subject: The Eternal Dusk
Method: Digital painting
Month of completion/latest editing: January 2020
Description: This piece is something I made to exist as a part of my original story. What is featured here is a house situated in the region of Bren - a realm completely inhabited by magic users. The land is also special because of the fact that instead of there being a regular day and night cycle, in Bren it’s always dusk. The house in question is the home of one of the protagonists’ (Rhydian) parents. The house is one of the only ones still standing after the massacre of the magical folks. This is largely due to the fact that it’s not situated in the main village of Bren, but actually quite far from the area. This is only my first finished piece of the house, and it is likely to change over time. My primary goal in drawing it was to incorporate as much of the dusk shades (orange, red, yellow) into the piece as possible. As can be seen from the original hand-drawn sketch of mine, the house was originally supposed to be much smaller - more like a one-room cottage. This changed after I decided to make the house into a family home rather than just a random, abandoned cottage in Bren. This piece is a combination of paint and sketch, with shading incorporated into the finished piece. Some of my inspiration for this scenery came from the town of Twilight Town, a fictional town in Kingdom Hearts. That town, too, has an eternal dusk/twilight.

Title/Subject: Roger Taylor (A Study)
Method: Hand sketch
Month of completion/latest editing: January 2020
Description: The purpose of this piece was for me to practice shading different parts of the face, and once again I used an image of Roger Taylor as reference. Unfortunately the scan has erased some of the darkness of the original picture, but the essence is still there. The piece was done entirely with regular pencils with the goal of capturing the original shades and expression.

Title/Subject: Country Symbols
Method: Digital drawing + painting
Month of completion/latest editing: January 2020
Description: These symbols are meant to represent the four primary countries featured in my original story. The color schemes are still a work-in progress, but the designs are final, I think. Almost all of the symbols are meant to be a little bit ironic in the context of the story. I got the ideas for each of these symbols by googling around for various symbols of peace, power, etc. The only exception is the symbol of Ethana, which I had previously created and worked into a pattern, also showcased in this portfolio.
Ethos: The symbol is of a leaf-like ensemble that resembles a fire. To me it is an interesting paradox, and symbolizes the difference between what the leaders of Ethos want people to think they are, and what they’re really like. They want to come across as peaceful and down-to-earth (hence the green color scheme as well), but in reality they are very power-hungry (green also symbolizes money) and deceiving. The fact that the symbol is green is also ironic because of the fact that Ethos is largely made of deserts and sandy areas rather than green forests.
Morium: Their symbol is essentially of a red sun with a crown in the middle, showcasing their superiority complex and their eagerness to be the center of everything. The sun is ironic in the sense that unlike Ethos, Morium is quite cold in its’ climate, to the point that it makes maintaining crops and any kind of agriculture difficult. Essentially, the land displays itself as being superior to everyone else, while in truth they are the poorest one in the mix.
Ascana: Flowers and rocks piled on top of each other in this manner can be used to symbolize harmony, which is exactly what Ascana wants people to think they aim to maintain. Their job is basically to be the referee, to make sure all lands get along and uphold the religion they preach. However, deep down, the land is the most corrupt one of all, so the symbol is the biggest lie imaginable. It’s just a facade to hide their true intentions.
Ethana: The now destroyed land of Ethana was enslaved by Ethos some years ago, and since then, the remaining citizens of the land have (in secret) changed the symbol. Originally it was just the grey/silver leaf on a gray background, but now there’s the added element of the blood-like color at the front. The color is meant to symbolize the massacre of the people and the culture, and their bleak future.

Title/Subject: Freddie Mercury Rainbow Edit
Method: Photoshop edit, background colorized with digital painting
Month of completion/latest editing: January 2020
Description: Editing photos, videos and gifs is one of my favorite hobbies. I decided not to include too much of that in my portfolio, as those pieces of work are not 100% mine, just edited from original photos. However, this was one of my favorite recent edits, and the one I wanted included in the portfolio. I included both versions of the edit I made, though I favor the one on the left. Inspiration for this came from Freddie’s iconic arrow jacket, and all of the colors used for the backgrounds (and font colors) come from different colors taken from his jacket. The point of the edit is simply to emphasize the wonderful color world of the clothing piece, and also to highlight Mercury’s colorful personality.

Title/Subject: Original Pattern
Method: Sketch + digital painting
Month of completion/latest editing: November 2019
Description: I made this piece with the intent of creating an entirely original symbol of mine, and then incorporating that symbol into a pattern of sorts. I started out with the idea of using some sort of a flower/leaf, as I am often inspired by floral patterns. Still, I also wanted the color scheme to be a darker shade. The reason for this is that I wanted to be able to use the symbol for something in my original story, which is quite dark in its nature. Eventually I ended up with this design, the red in the leaf symbolizing blood, and the grey and black symbolizing death. My work-in-progress of the symbol can be seen below.

Title/Subject: Robin (Sketches)
Method: Hand-drawn sketches
Month of completion/latest editing: December 2019
Description: I wanted to be sure to include at least one sketch into this portfolio, so I decided to go with these quick drawings I’d done of Robin, my original character. I am still trying to figure out the best way to draw him, and experimenting with different facial expressions is the best way for me to go about that. It can be challenging for me to be able to maintain the same style in all the sketches that I do, but I believe I’ve gotten better at it.

Title/Subject: Roger Taylor
Method: Hand-drawn sketch + Digital drawing/painting/shading
Month of completion/latest editing: January 2020
Description: I started this hand-drawn sketch of Roger about four months ago (September 2019), and returned to it in January 2020 to recreate it as a digital drawing. I used the photo below as reference in both instances, though the most important thing for me was to be able to recreate the feel of the original image. These two examples work well to showcase the difference in my style in hand-drawn pieces as opposed to digital pieces. Once again, the coloring process was something I wanted to do digitally, as it lends itself very well to shading, as well as studying the original colors in the source photo.

Title/Subject: Mullet: A Study
Method: Hand-drawn sketch + Digital coloring/shading
Month of completion/latest editing: December 2019
Description: One of my primary forms of drawing right now is to do the first draft on paper, using a regular pencil. After this, I often scan the drawing, retrace it with digital ink, and then color and shade with digital colors. I find this to be, for me, the best of both worlds. This way I can incorporate the personal touch that goes into my hand-drawn pieces with the wonderful variety of colors and shading options that come with digital drawing. As is seen when comparing the two pieces, the original is quite a bit different. This is because when hand-drawing, I tend to sketch in a much messier, more free form way that lends itself well to hand-drawn pieces - but not so well to coloring and shade in a clean manner. Still, I find this method to be useful also because it allows me to sketch where I think the shading should go. This, in turn, makes the eventual coloring much more effortless. The original inspiration for this piece came from Queen’s Roger Taylor, and particularly his 80′s hairstyle. Despite this, the piece is not directly modeled after him, or anyone else. I think experimenting with different clothing and hairstyles is important when drawing, so this was a good way of achieving that.

Title/Subject: Freddie Mercury’s Rainbow Jacket
Method: Digital drawing - sketch and colorization
Month of completion/latest editing: October 2019
Description: My inspiration for this piece came from this iconic rainbow/arrow jacket worn by Freddie Mercury at one of Queen’s concerts in the 1980′s. I love the colors in it, and I knew I wanted to draw it. I decided to emphasize the colors rather than focusing on the arrow shapes, and ended up just coloring the jacket in blotches of paint. The rest of Freddie is done in a semi-realistic way, though more emphasis is given to the jacket.

Title/Subject: Brian May
Method: Digital drawing - sketch and colorization
Month of completion/latest editing: November 2019
Description: The original idea behind this particular piece was for me to work on my own personal style of drawing while still using real-life photos as inspiration. In many of my other pieces, I have attempted to at least somewhat realistically recreate the faces/bodies of the subjects, and for this one, I wanted to do something different. While drawing realistic pieces is equally important to me, I also consider developing my own personalized style to be a priority. With that in mind, I drew my own take on Brian May, highlighting some of his features (ex. nose). The outfit was inspired by his attire in Queen’s music video Somebody to Love (1976), and his guitar is inspired by May’s actual guitar, the Red Special.

Title/Subject: Babylon on a Foggy Day
Method: Digital painting
Month of completion/latest editing: November 2019
Description: When it comes to drawing, I have always found humans and objects to be easier to draw than scenery. But recently, I’ve worked hard to become better at different forms of scenery-drawing, as I know it is a big part of working in Game art. I begun this piece with the intention of drawing a foggy/dark area surrounded by water. My original inspiration came from Mont Saint-Michel. As can be seen from the sketch I placed underneath this text, my original intent was to create a forest scenery with an island in the distance. However, as I continued to look through possible inspiration for just the right scenery, I came across pictures of Babylon, and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. I incorporated the idea of Babylon-esque buildings with a waterfall and a generally foggy atmosphere. This piece, unlike many of my other ones, is painted with no sketch marks left in the final product. The different texture brushes at my disposal in Photoshop CC helped me create a 3D-element to the different textures, and experimenting with different shades of color (this method of mine can also be seen in the form of the blocks of color at the top of the original sketch) helped create a more realistic-looking environment. This is particularly the case with the sky.
