I love this ‘walk-through’ excellent advice!!!
This might be a daft question, but how do you achieve such a sense of fluidity to the photos of your dolls? They seem to pose in such a natural/human way, whereas often when I take pictures of my dolls, they appear stiff and overly posed.
First of all awww thank you! >u
and sorry for the late response, I don’t claim to be any expert I just play with my dolls XD but maybe this will help you or someone else :P
When I’m posing my dolls I never just pose them once. I have an idea of what I want them to be doing and put them into that pose and then I’m constantly readjusting them and fiddling to get them looking more natural and relaxed.
Take a recent shoot I did with Knox:
Tumblr media
The one on the left is one of the first pictures I took from that shoot, the one on the right is one of the last.
You can see even though it’s the same basic pose, there are some major changes. When I first set her up I was mostly concerned with just getting her to sit there stably (you can’t see it too well but she’s sitting on a slope) from there I just fiddled with her arms a bit and then took the photo.
From that I was able to more clearly see some of the problems. Her foot and knee were the most obvious. I love my single jointed dolls but that knee isn’t pretty! XD easy solution was to rest her arm on there.
The other thing I should point out is her other arm. Notice how straight it is? True, arms do that, but it doesn’t look very relaxed does it? So I adjusted that too and at the same time pull her sleeve down to cover the joint there, because if you have a chance to hide a joint why not? XD
Other little things that got moved are her belt, her phone, the collar of her jacket, and of course her head.
The key is just to continuously look for little details that could be better, and you won’t catch them all. If I was doing this shoot over I would move her far arm up for a better angle, and turn the hand holding the phone more outward, but if you keep looking and adjusting you’ll get better at it ^-^
My other tips are always bring putty with you, I often end up sticking some under chins if I want them looking further up than they naturally would, cover joints whenever possible, and look at the pose as if you were doing it, if it doesn’t look like it would feel comfortable or natural adjust it!
I hope that helps at least a little, it’s really just practice and noticing the details ^u^

Amazing BJD outfit! <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
BJD outfit commission: I was asked to make a copy of Valentino’s cape, but in purple color, a pair of capris with star patches on the knees and a blouse with stars. It required a LOT of hand embroidery and applique applying.
The embroidery on the cape is done with a fluffy acrylic thread, and the black suede patches are applied. Even the names of the planets are embroidered.
Every star on the blouse is glued on, and the tails are embroidered with a golden thread. The pleats are secured with glue and thread in many places.
The stars on the capris are stabilized with a transparent glue, as the golden fabric frays extremely.
You may order clothing for your BJDs on my Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/WhisperingGrassBJD

Amazing work!
Tumblr media
Finally I wanna show you what I was working on the whole year. I was engineering my Articulated sculpture. The one you can change poses on. I will have a smaller version of that in resin affordable for everyone. Of course in the art frame of price. My doll is THE ONLY DOLL WHO CAN LIFT SHOULDERS!!!!!!!!!!! I started my doll from the shoulder joint. And it was my goal. To make her different. I tried more then 5 different shoulder joints and finally found the most organic one. It includes not only the shoulder. But also the socket and slits for it. I am very happy to introduce you my prototype in progress.

I don’t have notifications on for anyone - my posts aren’t in chronological order anymore but I usually just scroll from the begining until I recognize the last photo I saw - I don’t miss any posts - they just aren’t in order anymore - I guess it could be challenging if you followed A LOT of people but I don’t miss anyones posts and I have about 570+followings (people I follow) Turn off the notifications - its not worth it :P
I hate the way the new IG works. It was perfect before but they had to go and ruin it with post notifications! I have to keep my phone on silent constantly because I have notifications switched on for so many people. But if I don’t switch them on, they disappear off my feed. As a result I’m giving much less likes to people, therefore receiving fewer likes myself. Even the really big BJD hobbyists are getting hundreds and hundreds less like now. It sucks.

Oh I’m sorry you feel this way. I find Instagram to be a great place to connect with other hobbyists. If your comments are not reponded to don’t feel bad - it’s really challenging to respond to everyone on IG and I know I sometimes I get comments that I miss :( If you really want to chat a DM is much better. And if you are unhappy that no one is commenting on your posts... have you tried to start a conversation? Posing a question, asking for feedback on something could get things flowing. Good luck!
I hate what the BJD community on IG has become. It used to be laid back and awesome for making new friends. Nowadays unless you have 5k+ followers no one even bothers to respond to your comments of comment on your stuff at all, regardless of quality. At the same time people get 500+ likes on a portrait of a minifee with a blotchy faceup they’ve posted maybe a million times from slightly different angles over and over again.
