Practice Design for final piece
For this I looked at the previous design by Mathew Cusick and Hokusai. I liked how both designers created waves and I wanted to find use inspiration from those two.
I like how my design reflects my iteration of surfing and how the water looks and feels to me.

Matthew Cusick
Very very interested in Cusick’s art. He uses an atlas cut up and in different shades and colours to create waves and other art pieces.
I'm really fascinated about how someone could even think about doing this concept. I love how the colours flow and work together. Also how it looks from afar and then once you look closely you can see the maps and different views of the atlas.
-Something about this is the different variations of waves and textures that his design and art work bring.

This artist specialises in watercolour, his techniques seen are really unique and show off an almost precise look. Something I like about this is the use of colours and how they flow with the design.
-I do find Gan’s art to be an inspiration if I did want to do watercolour for my final design. I think that the smudged look of the paint strokes makes it flow nicely.

Katsushika Hokusai
https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/45434
Title: Under the Wave off Kanagawa (Kanagawa Oki Nami Ura), also known as The Great Wave, from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjūrokkei)
Artist: Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, Tokyo (Edo) 1760–1849 Tokyo (Edo))
Period: Edo period (1615–1868)
Date: ca. 1830–32
Tumblr media
“the breathtaking composition of this woodblock print said to have inspired Debussy’s La Mer (The Sea) and Rilke’s Der Berg (The Mountain), ensures its reputation as an icon of world art. Hokusai cleverly played with perspective to make Japan’s grandest mountain appear as a small triangular mound within the hollow of the cresting wave. The artist became famous for his landscapes created using a palette of indigo and imported Prussian blue”.

This is another stunning design made by Hokusai. By using his style I find this art really interesting to look at. It shows where the break is flowing and the whitewash is almost mixed with what looks like birds flying away in the background.

This video from Red Bull captures more of the excitement and fun when surfing, while also some fail and kinda the skills and mentality you have to be able to surf the bigger waves.

Mate Act Now: A protest for the digital generation aims to make people aware of climate change.
I am very interested in the way these posters are laid out, some being more complicated and full and others being filled with more negative space and simpler designs.
-Looking at the portrayal of water in these posters is quite different from each other. Some are very simple but effective. This has helped me open up to not just one idea of portraying water, and I could even do a more natural art to see the outcomes.
-Mate act Now also has many colours and varieties of posters that are really cool and interesting to look at. (Examples below)

“The moment a surfer gets wiped out and worked by the turbulence of one of the heaviest waves in the world. "This is the unseen part of surfing," says photographer Ben Thouard. "I have so much respect for both the wave and the surfers - surfing such a heavy wave is a huge challenge."
I have found inspiration in this photograph captured by Ben Thouard, it is something that as a surfer and getting knocked down by waves, it’s a small fear whilst losing your breath when you do get knocked down by a wave.
This also captures the many shades of blue that a wave holds.
- This photograph placed 1st place for The Ocean Photographer of the Year.

A surfer wipeout, as captured from below the surface. “I shot this image under the wave of Teahupo’o,” says photographer Ben Thouard. “I call this image ‘The fight’ as it visually describes the feeling of getting wiped out at Teahupo’o and fighting with the turbulence to make it back to the surface as your board drags you backwards. This is the unseen part of surfing, yet so mesmerizing.”
This is another image by Ben Thouard which really amazes me, it captures again the fear of being caught underneath the wave. It is a very thrilling photo, something that I might add the exhilaration and fear of surfing in my project design.
-I enjoy the smoky and cloudiness of the whitewash in this image. It looks really mysterious and spooky almost as if you don’t really know what is behind it or what is lurking beneath.
-Another link to this photo is that this was taken in Teahupoo in Tahiti which is home to some of the biggest waves in the world. My family and I love to watch the best waves caught or the biggest wipeouts there on youtube. It is actually on my bucket list to try and surf a wave there or to even just be on the side boast watching people surf.
-The video below shows how massive and terrifying these waves are. The second scariest thing is that there is a coral reef right under it and it is very shallow, so you have to be very smart and a professional at surfing if you wanted to take on one of these waves, as if you fall, bail or get sucked in, you may be pushed on the reef below.
But for me watching these two videos below gives me goosebumps and makes me want to leave class and head to the beach. But in slow motion, it is quite mesmerising and almost hypnotic to watch, but seeing how large these waves get is quite terrifying yet exciting.

Planning and drafts
Finding inspiration with different forms of waves and water texture. I feel that for my final design piece is could be a surf board sticker, or a design poster.
Still want to trial with water colour also to get different variations and another style.

Why I have chosen this subject?
Being a hobby and a lifestyle for me I knew this was something I can relate to very well. I am able to look back at memories for myself and the future of me and my surfing.
I have been surfing almost all my life, it started with bodyboarding and learning the tides, and sets, which way the waves will crash and where to catch the best waves. Until I wanted to learn how to surf. It took many years of building confidence and practice. I have always loved the ocean also.
Culture
Location: Waimarama beach.
A very important place for me culturally. It is where my marae and whenua lie. Out at sea at Waimarama beach is where We lost our ancestor Tiakitai who was the chief and of whom I am a descendant. So the sea where we surf is filled with strong ties and is where we feel at home. Although we don't head back home much we always find our way back, with our surfboards ready to ride some waves together.

-How I am today. More in-depth about how fun and exhilarating it is to be back on the water, especially after not being out for a long time. (due to being so far away)
-How the beach still feels the same

Planning my story
For my introduction, I want to describe the beach and the place where I love to surf the most. The place is Waimarama beach which is located in my home town called Waimarama on the east coast 30 minutes away from Hastings.
This place is the home of my ancestors and my dad's family, so a very important place for me.
Describing what it feels like for me, and why being home is the best place to surf. If it’s when the tides are in or out, what time of day, or where all the wetsuits and surfboards are.

Design inspiration in other designs
Looking through google for surfing designs/art I found these on which I want to base my design and story. I like the contrast in the bottom image with the orange/yellow tones flowing through the blue.
With the top 3,  I want to do a flip on those designs, hoping to make it a sphere shape. (Having the wave going around in a circle and then having a surfer in the middle.) But I do like the look of the watercolour, And is something I do want to try out.
With the middle Image (Black and White ink), With the design being close to my art style I want to somehow have a part of this in my design also. Whether it be for small graphics or to outline my work.

Design research.
I liked the look of this poster, the colours and the simplicity of this design. The blues in a gradient is something I want to portray in my own design.  I want to test my design with paint, ink and pen to see the variations and then decide on my final design.

Looking through the brief and highlighted the main key terms I need to focus on and remember throughout this paper. For my story, I want to look at something with a personal meaning through time. Using the memory of surfing, having all emotions gone, and just being in the moment. This is something that I feel I can create emotion and a balance between reality and fantasy (Being in my head).
Being in the ocean for me is an escape from everything, I am able to think clearly and enjoy the cold water and the rush that the waves bring me. I do want to plan my story out as a big metaphor if I can. So that my story can be perceived in any way the reader feels.

What is storytelling?
Storytelling is the social and cultural activity of sharing stories, sometimes with improvisation, theatrics or embellishment. Every culture has its own stories or narratives, which are shared as a means of entertainment, education, cultural preservation or instilling moral values.
Storytelling is the interactive art of using words and actions to reveal the elements and images of a story while encouraging the listener's imagination.
The 5 Key Story Elements
Character.
Conflict.
Plot.
Setting.
Theme.
Stories teach us about life, about ourselves and about others. Storytelling is a unique way for students to develop an understanding, respect and appreciation for other cultures, and can promote a positive attitude toward people from different lands, races and religions.  Good stories are easy to understand. They're also told in a language that matches how the intended audience communicates, so they don't need to spend time interpreting and absorbing. Simplicity also aids in memorability, because the overall lesson is easy to grasp in summary.
