Welcome to RipRap, a literary journal designed and produced annually by students in the Master of Fine Arts, Creative Writing program at California State University Long Beach (CSULB). Since its inception in 1951, the journal has evolved from its original title, Hornspoon until it was renamed Gambit and finally in 1979, RipRap. RipRap reaches farther than the wide regions of its home in Southern California and highlights writers from across the country as well as enlightening interviews of award winning, published writers who are featured in the English Department’s Visiting Writers Series. RipRap offers a humble invitation to all talented and aspiring writers of all genres and is open to everyone. Specifically, RipRap publishes creative short fiction and non-fiction, poetry, and art such as photography, illustration, and original art pieces. Submit Your Work Electronically

Rescheduled Release Party for RipRap 35
The editors of Riprap regret to announce that there has been a delay with the release of RipRap 35 and that we have no choice but to reschedule the release party and reading. It will now be combined with the MFA Graduate Reading on May 20th, which is being held in the USU Beach Auditorium at 7:00pm. We truly hope that all of the very fine contributors to RipRap will still be able to participate in this celebration.
The editors also wish to thank the many students who showed up earlier this week to get the issue collated and ready for binding. The failure of the print shop on campus to get the binding done, on schedule, is a substantial disappointment for all of us who worked (literally) day and night to get the final product ready for public distribution.
We deeply apologize for any inconvenience this postponement may cause and hope that you will still be able to join us for the unveiling. Thank you for your understanding and support.
On behalf of the editorial staff, Jax NTP

A retired social services professional, his poetry and prose have appeared or are forthcoming in Bellevue Literary Review, Evening Street Review, Oberon, San Diego City Beat, and San Diego Reader. Jen French is a second year fiction student in CSULB’s MFA creative writing program. She is currently working on her thesis, which is a collection of short stories that focus on the dark complexities, oddities and humor of the human psyche. When she’s not writing stories of pedophile compounds, hateful crones and heroic hallucinogen peddlers, she enjoys spending her time swimming in the Pacific and dancing to cumbia. Mary Kinard received a BA with an emphasis in Creative Writing in 2008. While pursuing an MFA Fiction degree at CSULB, she makes time for scrapbooking, the works of Frank McCourt and Rick Bragg, and collecting insects with her grandsons. She loves God and Pennsylvania above apple pie and bright flannel shirts. Ramsey Mathews is a first-year MFA poet. He grew up in rural Georgia. As a kid he worked in tobacco, soybeans, and peanuts, where he learned the art of cow tipping. He camps and climbs, especially at Joshua Tree, where he broke his leg. “When all other inspirations fail, there remains the surreal nature of love to write about.” Jax NTP is a second-year MFA poet, Editor-in-Chief of RipRap Literary Journal Volume 35, and the Coordinator of this MFA Reading Series. Her thesis and poetry explore the psychology of the grotesque, identity&gender binaries, and “neurosity” the velocity of neurotic paralysis in both modern and surreal environments. Shadden Scholarship Award for Poetry in Spring 2011. Her first chapbook, Life After Purgatory, was released in Fall 2012 and is available for purchase. She loves narrative and snarky contemporary poetry, dystopians, small presses, tacos, beer, barbecuing, and laughing at bad television. She hopes to one day write a graphic novel and a television pilot.

California State University, Long Beach
English Department - Master of Fine Arts - Creative Writing
*2nd Annual MFA Reading Series 3rd Installment
Tuesday, 18 December 2012, 6:45PM
Our Reading Line Up:
Sean McDougal
Fabiola Guzman
Monica Holmes
Ramsey Mathews
Mony Vong
--
READERS' BIOS:
Monica Holmes is a second-year MFA fiction writer. She likes pretty much everything about Long Beach, except that it has no mall. Her writing focuses on childhood and growing up in southern California. She dedicates all her writing to her father, who first taught her there was a "t" in "listen."
Fabiola Guzman is a second- year MFA poet. She also enjoys writing nonfiction and hopes to publish a memoir in the near future. Family is an important aspect in her life which can bee seen as a powerful force in her writing. She has over forty cousins and counting. She dislikes hurting any creatures including mice and ninja spiders. In her spare time she indulges in snowboarding, hiking, swimming, and video games. Some of her favorite foods include raspberries and salami.
Ramsey Mathews is a first-year MFA poet. He grew up in rural Georgia. As a kid he worked in tobacco, soybean, and peanuts, where he learned the art of cow tipping. Thus, his Southern poems. He camps and climbs, especially at Joshua Tree, where he broke his leg. More poetry . Ramsey says, "When all other inspirations fail, there remains the surreal nature of love to write about."
Sean McDougal is a second-year MFA fiction writer. What initially drew him to writing was lyric writing, having sang and played guitar and piano in bands since age ten. Because of lyric writing, he was first interested in poetry, but then moved over to fiction because the lengths of the narratives and the attention to details put into prose writing. He is currently working on a novel about a young man who lives next to a military base. The novel will focus on one particular week during a summer. Sean and his wife own and operate a photography business and they live in San Diego with their two children.
Mony Vong is a second year MFA fiction writer. She received her BA with an emphasis in Creative Writing from CSULB. Long Beach has been her home for a long time though she’s not a native speaker of English. She moved here when she was in grade school. She has three tremendous children who keeps her on her toes. In addition to being a writer and a mother, She’s a lover, a girl, a purveyor of books, an adult and the domestic goddess. She’s lived in many places and countries but the place she’s most comfortable in is in the The Great Gatsby, Huckleberry Finn, Mice and Men, Ask the Dusk, and Charlotte’s Web among many other favorites.
