are you really an ao3 user if you've never read a >50k fanfic that is incredibly fucking good, much much better than any original work out there, with eloquent writing so deep and poetic that you have to pause after every few sentences, process it and scream into a muffled pillow?

bonus if you're supposed to be studying for something or other but decided to read just one more chapter, and finished the whole thing :')

So like, I know I have a lot of WIP out there. A lot of fic I haven’t updated in a long time but have no plans of abandoning because I love all of my writing and I do have plans for all of my works. It’s just finding motivation that’s the issue, not the intent to finish them.

If I’d planned to never work on something again, I’d do what most people do these days and label it as Abandoned. Hell, if I hated it and decided to axe it completely, I’d just remove it.

There are plenty of fic I follow that haven’t been update in a long time - some over a decade, and that’s fine - and I love to reread and daydream about potential endings. A fun way to pass the time, because I can come up with the endings or continuations in my own way even if they never get finished.

I don’t, however, contemplate stealing them.

That is to say. Never be ashamed of the characters in your fanfic being OOC. I mean, it’s good that you get their canon characterization right, but if you can’t or you just simply like a specific image of them, then that’s fine. That’s totally fine. Make that vampire lord a babygirl for all i care. It’s your work. You work for it for your own enjoyment. Its primary purpose should be to cater for you only (and a handful of moots who share the same taste idk lol). Therefore, your enjoyment should be the only criteria.

And if someone dislikes it, they can shut up and leave.

i hate how modern culture has kind of…pushed its narrative on fanfic. like, authors aren’t writing fic to be a product. they’re not writing it to please the public or make a profit off of it. they’re writing it for themselves and because they enjoy making people happy and sharing their stories with others. they’re not obligated to listen to any sort of suggestion/criticism/complaint/etc. because their fic isn’t a product. it’s not something you can rate. give kudos and leave a comment if you like it. scroll if you don’t.
