How does meditation practice make you happy?
Yoga Teacher Training in India — When we are talking about meditation practice do, we all have in common? What motivates us? What is it that we’re all motivated for? We’re all looking to avoid pain, difficulties and dissatisfaction. We all want to be contented and happy, and experience a sense of well-being in our lives. But most of us are looking for happiness in the wrong places.
Relying on External Situations Results in Dissatisfaction
We constantly seek pleasurable situations that we think will bring lasting happiness. We’re attracted to wealth, power, success, possessions, relationships, security and the like because we think they can provide us with the stable happiness we crave. But most of these pursuits don’t lead to the desired outcome.
Maybe we’re looking for happiness in the wrong place because we don’t see the impermanent nature of these things we crave. In fact, every situation, everything we might acquire to secure this happiness is going to pass. External things aren’t able to give us lasting satisfaction.
Suppose you’re in the perfect situation: you’re on the beach in the best company, you’ve just had the best meal you can imagine, everything’s going exactly like you want it — then a fly or a mosquito comes by, or you see rubbish on the beach, and suddenly your perfect situation is shattered and the only thing you can think about is the problem that makes it imperfect.
Yoga in India
There’s always a limit to what external things can bring us. Once the fascination and newness wear off, or situations change (as they always do), our minds default to varying degrees of dissatisfaction, which is expressed as a form of agitation. We try to get relief from this agitation by looking outward for solutions. Deep down, we’re troubled and don’t see how we get trapped — we’re like a fish attracted to bait. This cycle can be called the “dissatisfaction default mode.”
Of course, this doesn’t mean that we should be pessimistic about our lives and the world. The world offers many very nice, pleasurable things like good relationships, meaningful work, good health and prosperous situations that provide comfort for a certain length of time. But the problem is that they are not totally reliable. Situations change. Friendships come and go, our children grow up and leave home, our finances change and our health becomes less robust.
We must become more realistic. No one wants to experience unpleasant situations such as physical pain, emotional pain, or death, but they happen nonetheless. There are many things we can’t change about the external world, but we can change how we relate to them. Much of the dissatisfaction we experience is due to our inner state of being, not just external conditions. And this is where meditation comes in.
Meditation Gives Us Access to Our Own Happiness & Well-Being
The mind holds innate qualities of well-being and clarity that lie waiting beneath the superficial level of dissatisfaction. The main purpose of meditation is to access, recognize and enhance the positive qualities of mind. The more we can do this, the less we need to rely on external situations for our happiness and the more we can rely on the natural, positive qualities of mind: love, contentment, well-being and peace.
Accessing our natural happiness and inner well-being is one of the greatest achievements that can be attained. They’re always with us because they don’t depend on anything external: no one can take them away. They depend only on us and affect everything in our lives in a positive way. It’s like discovering that there’s a hidden treasure within. To access this treasure, we begin by focusing inwardly — and for this we need training. Meditation is this training. As we meditate more, we gain confidence in our basic, innate goodness and well-being; this unlocks our potential and gives our lives tremendous meaning. In this sense, the question “Does meditation make you happy?” answers itself. Meditation doesn’t make you happy — it unlocks the “happy” that has always been there for the asking.

How often should you practice Yoga?
Practicing yoga every day is best for your good health. After research on google, I have found Yoga in Rishikesh is the best choice for all yoga lovers in Yoga Capital. This would be a very short post if the answer were merely “every day”.
It depends on what did you say. Do you mean?
· How often should I take a yoga class?
· How often should I do the physical practice of yoga to get a benefit from it?
· If I practice more, will I “get better” faster?
· What is the least amount of time I can practice and still get a physical benefit?
· Why do you keep talking about the “physical practice?”
Is your head spinning yet?
Let’s start out with how many times a week you can safely practice yoga? (Here’s the gentle reminder that despite often being confused for one, in fact, I am not a doctor — please always consult your doctor before undertaking any physical activity.)
You know your body best. However, as a general rule of thumb, a healthy practice for vinyasa yoga is usually around 3–5 times a week. This gives you adequate time for rest. Rest is crucial to recover, get stronger and maintain your health. [Speaking of rest, it is okay to take an entire week off from time to time. You might find you come back feeling stronger on many levels.] Are there people who can practice 6 or 7 days a week without an issue? Absolutely. There are also people who practice twice a day. And this begs the question…
What is your purpose for practicing yoga?
If it’s to burn a few extra calories or get physically stronger then running and lifting weights are viable options. Many people come to practice to “get a workout”. And that’s a start. The physical benefits are merely fringe benefits. You get them like the extra lip balm I got when I recently bought a bottle of sunscreen. Rather than work that is focused outward, though, we are doing inward work.
People do get injured practicing yoga. It happens all of the time. Repetitive strain injury (RSI), (with other fun names like repetitive stress injury, cumulative trauma disorder and overuse syndrome to name a few,) can happen when you do repetitive tasks, like chaturanga over and over and over. The treatment for RSI is typically rest and/or strengthening exercises. Why do I bring this up? Because if you expect to “go hard”, “give it 110%” and do the “no pain, no gain” thing by practicing in a strenuous manner every day then expect to take a few months off every now and then for injury.
How about if you are able to only practice once a week? Yes you will benefit from such a practice, though the effect may not be the same. Doing too little can be the same as doing too much. The key is to find an amount of practice that feels balanced for you. Balance is critical, as is consistency. To get started, it’s helpful to make a commitment to practice regularly (3–5 times weekly) for a certain number of weeks (4–6) and then re-evaluate. This gets you into the habit and lets you get stronger physically.
How long does it take to see results? I often say in class, give it 10 or 12 — years. What? Yes, you’ll start to see benefits almost immediately. Some experience a feeling of peace and relaxation after their first class…but this practice takes time. I have seen people completely change their body in a year. The work of the soul, the atman, takes a little longer. Expect to put some effort into this for a period of time.
Though yoga is known as a physical practice in the West, it was originally intended to connect you to your mind, body and spirit. This practice of being conscious and awake can help you live a richer and more fulfilling life.
The physical practice is the “way inside”; it’s the way we become present and bring awareness. There are many other ways in, such as meditation, chanting and mantra. The important point is getting inside and become an observer of you. This will help you uncover and connect with your true and authentic self.
Once you get start to feel the benefits of a regular practice it is easy to forget what it was like before. A friend of mine recently came back to class after being gone for 6 weeks for work. She mentioned that she was surprised she had begun to feel depressed again. She forgot the calm her yoga practice afforded her.
To practice yoga, ultimately, is to move it beyond the four walls of a yoga studio, whether in Sacramento or elsewhere. To do justice to the practice means we live it — by showing up, connecting with others, offering a smile, a kind word, and sometimes by our presence alone. To practice is to be loving, compassionate and kind. Yoga, then, is something we practice all of the time.
For how long? For me, my practice is like eating and sleeping. It is something I do for my health and happiness, true, but also for my community and for the people I love. I practice to feel connected with everything and everyone and to feel the bigger love that is all around us. It is something I will do for the rest of my life. So, You're Thinking About a 5 Day Vedic Science & Silent Meditation Retreat in Rishikesh
At the starting of last month, I quit my job. And thinking to go on a break. I googled and found Rishikesh School of Yoga is the oldest center in Rishikesh, India. They are also giving 100hr, 200hr & 300hr Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh, India.

With not much more knowledge than that, I embarked upon five days of silence at Rishikesh School of Yoga’s Vedic culture center, India.
I thought it was five days of unplugging and zenning out. It didn’t need long before I understood that’s not quite what I had just signed up for. Connect with the pleasure that exists in the present moment. That is unchanged by gain or loss… that frees your mind.
When a yoga retreat packs is a fantastic combination of yoga, travel, people, culture, nature, food, and healing… then it sets your soul on fire. By joining a yoga retreat in India, you can sink into the environment of yoga, examine the beauty of regular calmness of mind, and experience even more intensely your true self. It’s more than a traditional Himalayan yoga retreat in Uttarakhand.
If you ever determine to do something similar, you’ll arrive at the center in the afternoon of “Day Zero.” at RSY. Everyone gathers, and some ground rules are laid out. The members are separated; the timetable is shared (wake up at 5 am, upwards of 10 hours of meditation; lights out at 10 pm), and the idea of “noble silence” is added. Despite it remaining a silent meditation course, there is talking that takes place — you receive instruction over the five days, and if you have queries or questions, you are free to both ask the instructors or the followers. Beyond this, however, it’s not merely that you’re not expected to talk.
The first few days aren’t spent learning Vedanta at all, but rather a different meditation technique. This has you center on the breath and the emotions that arise from breathing in and breathing out. The purpose is two-fold: to prepare you to adjust your mind for an extensive period, but also to focus your mind on detecting emotions on the body in a concise area.
After each day, a discussion is given (via video recording) by a Vedic Guru of the name Swami Umesh Yogi. I won’t lie — the discussions after each day were something that I started to look ahead to immensely. It wasn’t just that they separated the successful conclusion of another day (you made it!), but to put it plainly, Swami Umesh Yogi Ji is one hell of a teacher.
Following these discussions, it soon becomes clear that he knows the material behind. His ability to cross nested lists of difficult concepts with ease was breath-taking. He combines a clear interest for the well-being of those he’s teaching, with a Vedic presence that shines through even over video.
Swami Ji’s own story only adds confidence to what you learn. In some of the discussions, he’ll share parts of the path he took to Vedanta — being born into a prosperous business family and a very complex spiritual tradition to Hinduism. His background also informs how he explains the course. It’s intended to be available to us folks that he terms “householders,”, as he already was. Everything that’s taught is useful for those who haven’t chosen to focus our days entirely on meditation.
More than this, though, what I soon came to appreciate about the teaching was how practical it is, and the degree to which you’re responsible for your success or failure. Supporting many religions is the idea that the interest in doing the right thing will accrue to you in heaven. And if you’re fighting, don’t worry, there’s a higher power you can call upon to give you a hand. This isn’t how Vedanta works. The advantage you get isn’t for next; it’s essential, here, for right now. It’s also earned clear in the training that there are no precise cuts to be had in times of the rigid obligation that you want to do: you’re there to learn how to follow the technique. Once you have the system, it’s on you to put in the work to get the results you want. No one other can do it for you. And it’s not going to be easy.
You soon discover that Vedanta is downright hard — especially to begin with.
It’s on Day 5 that this realization will strike when you switch away from meditation. While you’re still being (hopefully), when you start Vedic Study, the breath is no longer the meditation object. Away from the characters, away from the negativity, away from the hustle and bustle, and away from every tension and worry. RSY’s yoga retreats are intended to give you a lovely holiday while helping you encounter real yoga, which is the joy of combining body, mind, and soul.
Demonstrating why this shift takes place requires a little bit of context. These upper levels of the brain — the ones that trade with the understanding of the reasons or reasoning and interpretation — are undoubtedly necessary. But to get at the heart of need and dislike, you need to go down below. You require to go all the way forward into the mind: the part of the reason that’s always on. Guruji won’t get you beyond, because this part of the brain is centered entirely on what’s transpiring inside the body. So, what does this internally-focused section of the mind reacts to?
Trains out, there are two people, and they’re relatively self-obvious: pleasant emotions on the body. And disagreeable sensations on the body. Throughout our records, we have expertly trained ourselves to be moved to pleasurable feelings and recoil from the obnoxious ones. We fixate on what we want. We get annoyed if we don’t get it. And we get anxious if it looks like we’re going to get what we don’t want.
It’s reached the point where we’ve almost become slaves to these sensations for many of us.
Despite the expense of energy we spend trying to plan situations to turn out the way we want, unescapably, there’s a lot of life that’s elsewhere our power. There’s petty we can do to overcome those slings and bolts of outrageous fortune. Similarly, pleasure and pain on the body will always be… well, pleasurable, or painful. You’re not going to change that.

The Challenges of Silent Meditation
For centuries, silent meditation kept for the fortunate few who had abandoned the world and sought-after communion – with the celestial, the universe, or their own inner presence – in remote convents and retreat settings around the world. Nowadays though, intensive silent meditation follows have become widely accessible through a variety of organizations, both religious and secular. It’s regularly only during intensive meditation retreats that your exercise may take time away from your sleep. When you’re inactive at home or in a group outside of retreat, chances are that your practice will make it cooler for you to unwind in the evening. If you find it difficult to fall asleep, guided relaxation meditations can be a great help.
5. Contentedness
Feeling good afterward your daily meditation session can be inspirational, but it can also be a big obstacle if you expect to always have the same practice. It’s great to feel good, but don’t let this outshine your better resolve to persist with daily silent meditation, come what may. There will be days when your meditation is delightful, and days as soon as you’d like to throw your practice out the window.
Here again, the key is to detect these spirits without ruling or attachment, and forge on! Contentedness comes from the information that you’re undertaking what it takes to get the most benefit from your practice: you’re staying the course. Jolly good!

Three reasons to practice silence Yoga

People about the world have been practicing intended continuous silence for centuries. As someone who has stayed in the yoga world for 15 years, extended stages of silence aren’t a new concept to me. But then again when it is existing to people not rooted in the yoga world, I often hear things like:
“Oh, I could NEVER do that!”
“Hey Jess! A silent retreat. You should try that! Ha!”
“Why would ANYONE want to do that!?”
Why practice continual silence?
Mauna is a Sanskrit word meaning silence. Probabilities are you have practiced the power of silence in small slices, like to honor someone’s passing or in prayer. Maybe you’ve stood wherever with an awe-inspiring view that left you speechless. Maybe you’ve observed artists move in a way that left a long pause before the clapping. So often we say things like, “there are no words to describe…” Mauna is a way to gain an understanding of that which is beyond words.
Swami Umesh Yogi said: “Energy is wasted in idle talking and gossiping… By practicing mauna, the energy of speech is slowly transmuted into spiritual energy. Mauna develops will-force, curbs the impulse of speech, and gives peace of mind.”
Will-force:
The third Niyama, or moral code, in The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, is Tapas. Tapas means discipline and is the will-force it takes to do the things we say we are going to do.
Tapas is riding out the urges you have to take a cigarette break when you’ve decided to quit smoking. It is sitting with your uncomfortable cravings for the sake of kicking a habit you no longer desire.
How would you feel if you were a smoker for many years and because of determined discipline you realized you no longer want a cigarette? How would it feel to have developed that force of will?
For those of you who say, “I could NEVER take a vow of silence,” this practice is for you! What if you tried to, were determined, and actually did? What will-force would you develop by sitting through the urges to talk and turn on your cell phone and text and comment? How strong might you feel? How could you translate this discipline into other areas of your life?
Curbing the impulse of speech:
For many people new to silence, mauna takes the form of periods of controlled speech. One reason this is challenging is because most people want to be heard. Having someone hear you, validate your feelings, and dialogue with is a way that most humans form connection and relationships.
According to Cook of Rishikesh School of Yoga, so much of our identity is created by relating our experiences to those of other people and forming opinions that others validate.
How would your view of yourself change if you didn’t have others to relate to? What is your Identity beneath the identity that you curate for others on social media? One thing Swami Umesh Yogi, yoga educator and author, asks often is, “Who are you, really?”
Another thing Swamiji discusses is what she calls “energy dumping”. Have you ever been in a great mood until you cross paths with someone who makes you the receiving end of a 10-minute rant that leaves them feeling relieved but you feeling stressed? Have you ever been the ranter?
I love the quote “Are your words an improvement upon silence. It they aren’t, then why are you speaking?”
So many in Western culture yell about their feelings and opinions. With Mauna we practice keeping that energy in, processing and integrating it. We become more aware of our impulse to speak. With this awareness we are better able to control anger and channel our emotions. We become more skilled at pausing and carefully choosing our words. We are able to conserve the energy we might spew out and redirect it into creativity and productivity.
Peace of mind:
According to the Bhagavad Gita, mauna is about training our minds, not just our mouths, to be silent.
Pema Chödrön said, “You are the sky. Everything else — it’s just the weather.” There is the sky, and then there is thunder or snow or sun. There is you, and then there is the noise of your thoughts.
