The DaVinchi Tool: Decrease Neck Pain
One of the things we hear from patients frequently, is that they need a good way to decrease neck pain. Though there can be many causes of neck pain, and this option may not be an appropriate intervention for ALL cases, the DaVinchi Tool is a great way to relieve uncomplicated neck pain and stiffness. This device helps treat two common causes of neck pain: the muscles and the joints.
The muscles are treated with compression, similar to a trigger point type of care. You can also do some small movements as you are using the DaVinchi tool, and this may help you relieve even deeper layers of muscle.
The joints are treated with a type of joint stretch, which is accomplished by allowing your neck muscles to relax over the device. Once your neck has relaxed, the DaVinchi Tool can help to improve extension (backward bending) of your neck.
Overall, when paired with a good neck mobility routine, the DaVinchi tool represents an effective way to improve the function of your neck, which typically also improves your pain levels. The video below shows some basic usage examples on how to use the DaVinchi Tool to decrease neck pain.
vimeo
Here are a few tips to get you started with the DaVinchi Tool:
Start out with 1 session per day, 2-3 regions of your neck, and hold each point for a minimum of 30 seconds.
After 1-2 weeks of this routine, increase the hold time on each point to a tolerable duration. Your goal, after weeks/months should be to achieve 2-5 minutes on each point.
Note that the longer you hold each point, the more likely it is going to produce soreness. This soreness may occur right after you are done with treating a region, or later that day or even the next day. Be gentle.
As you are getting comfortable with the DaVinchi Tool, feel free to add small movements over the device. For example: nodding, tilting, rotation, and combinations of each may be helpful.
The more sore each point is, the slower you go…both in terms of building up time, but also building movement.
Overall, the DaVinchi Tool is one of the most versatile and accessible ways to self-treat your neck pain. We have them available for purchase at our Clinics, and you can also find them online. There are additional resources and purchase options on the BodyBack Company Website. They also have a manual on their web site for the DaVinchi Tool with additional tips as well as treatment suggestions for other areas of the body.

A better year is here (I hope)! Is it a year for a better you too?
Happy New Year! I have to say when I woke up the morning o January 1st,  I felt a lot more optimistic about the year ahead. Yes, I know there is a looooong way to go with the pandemic, but a new year means a reset. And after 2020, I think we can all agree we’re ready for that!
Last year right about this time, Olympic adopted a new tagline we felt spoke to wellness through water and all its terrific health benefits. We know how impactful regular hot tub soaks can be for so many aspects of our lives. Better you. Better life. seemed to really encapsulate what hot water therapy can do for you.
2020 saw an awakening to the importance of focusing on the true merits of becoming a better you, and ultimately having a better life. A lot of folks made it a priority to get a hot tub at home and enjoy that safe haven every day. From helping with Type 2 Diabetes and arthritis, to pain management, to better sleep, to bonding time with family…there are so many ways a hot tub can enrich and improve your life.
Every year a lot of us make resolutions…and some of them we keep, others get abandoned. If you’ve always wanted a hot tub, make this the year you invest! It will absolutely have a positive impact on your overall health and well-being. After being in this business for over 25 years, one thing I never stop hearing? “I wish I would have done this sooner.” Don’t let that be you!
If you decide to embark on that hot tub hunt, you’ll find our timelines for getting a tub to you have extended significantly due to the demand for hot tubs over the past year. If you’re thinking you want a tub soon, soon right now can translate into this spring or early summer. The time to start your research and make your decision is now!
I’m grateful we are entering our 39th year as Hot Spring’s exclusive dealer in great Puget Sound. As the world’s top-selling hot tub brand, we know that we can help you find the right tub with confidence. Painstaking research and engineering has gone into every model we sell. And, with the added benefit of healthy saltwater soaking thanks to the FreshWater Salt System, you’ll absolutely be able to find the “just right” tub for you.
If you’re in our service area and ready to make a hot tub part of your better you, do call one of our six showrooms and make an appointment. I know you’ll be excited by what you find, and ready to help it get you one step closer to a healthier better life.
Better YEAR. Better YOU. Better LIFE!

Both clinics are OPEN!!!
Just wanted to confirm – we are OPEN and will remain open as long as it is safe to do so!!!
We are currently scheduling Chiropractic, Massage and Rehabilitation visits – we’re here for you.
We are taking steps to make sure that we minimize the likelihood of patient borne illness:
Patients will be screened on the phone prior to their appointment for COVID-19 exposure and symptoms, and asked to bring/wear a mask or face covering for their visit to minimize risk.
We have also asked our staff to do the same.
When you arrive for your appointment, we’ll take your temperature to screen for fever, and ask you to wash your hands in the restroom.
When possible, please keep 6 ft apart in adherence with social distancing guidelines and be mindful of others.
Appointments will be spaced out to minimize the number of patients in the clinic.
Rooms will be thoroughly disinfected between use.
Treatment tables, instruments, etc. will be sanitized after each treatment.
We are recommending that patients that feel that they are in a high-risk category for COVID-19 complications call to discuss their condition with their provider to determine the best course of action.
We have also taken steps to sanitize the clinics:
We are regularly disinfecting all surfaces and touch points in the clinic.
We have added UV Sterilization to the HVAC in both the Pearl and Multnomah Village clinic. UV is the only way we could find that would actually inactivate viruses and bacteria. This will treat all of the air in the clinic.
Staff will have their temperature taken each morning at work, and sent home if they have a fever.
If you have specific questions, please call the clinic and we’ll get it sorted – we’re here for you!

One way to help your mental health? A hot tub
October 12, 2020 – This past Saturday was World Mental Health Day. Started by the World Federation for Mental Health, it was first observed in 1992. It’s important to give some time to this topic. About 450 million people deal with a mental disorder, and it’s been noted that at some stage in life, one out of every four people will be affected by some type of mental ailment.
It’s no big surprise that the pandemic has added another layer to an already significant worldwide issue. Anxiety, fear, uncertainty, social distancing, restrictions to interact with others…these all can have an impact on our mental health.
Yet, there are a multitude of easy steps you can take to improve and protect your mental well-being! Some are incredibly simple to adopt, like working omega-3 fatty acids into your regular diet and eating dark chocolate every few days. (I won’t have a problem doing the latter, believe me!)
Time with a furry friend does immeasurable good, as does writing a simple thank you note and taking a 30-minute walk outside.
Another way to give your mental health a boost is by giving something new a try that’s outside of your comfort zone. If there’s something you’ve always thought about trying or doing, a new experience or adventure may be just the ticket.
And…guess what? As those of us in the hot tub world know, regular hot tub soaks do wonders for your mental well-being! Soothing aches and pains, melting away stress, and getting a boost to your magnesium levels are just a few of the benefits of immersing yourself in hot water.
Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.
I hope you will take time today—and every day—to do a little something and take steps to a mentally healthy you!

Five top things to consider when buying a hot tub right now
October 7, 2020  – As demand for hot tubs continues at an all-time high, there are a lot of first time hot tub shoppers out there trying to figure out the right tub to buy.
Plenty of people come into the hot tub buying process thinking that a good hot tub will cost about $5,000. This always amazes me, as that’s how much folks thought a good hot tub cost when I started out in the hot tub industry—25 years ago! Once you do some research, you’ll realize good quality tubs that are designed to be easy to own and last for years will cost a good bit more than $5,000. With that kind of investment, you owe it to yourself to make sure you focus on the right things to make a smart decision. Here are five things you should consider when you buy a hot tub right now!
Sitting in safe clean water is paramount. Get a tub that has good balanced filtration. One tiny filter in a 400-500 gallon tub means two things: they put little thought, expense or care into making sure you would sit in clean water, and you may end up doing a lot more work to keep the water clean than anyone has time for these days. Balanced filtration with multiple filters ensures you sit in water that’s cleaner and will require less work for you. Also, look for tubs that allow you to sit in virtually chlorine free water. Hot Spring Spas feature healthy salt water soaking. You’ll sit in water that’s softer, has enough residual sanitizer produced for safe soaking, and is far better for you and the environment.
Get a hot tub that won’t shock you when the power bill arrives. This requires a deeper look, as all hot tubs must meet the energy guidelines put forth by the California Energy Commission. That’s a bare minimum benchmark! If you look beyond the marketing statements made by most hot tub manufacturers, you’ll discover no third party energy testing has been done, nor have the tubs been built to truly keep your energy costs low. Hot Spring is the only manufacturer to this very day that has contracted an outside agency to conduct energy use studies. You’ll find an energy calculator on their site to help you determine the approximate cost of running a Hot Spring Spa in your backyard. You’ll be pleased to see you could run your hot tub for a month for the cost of about four lattes! (It will be much better for you, too!)
A lot of jets may be nice…good therapeutic jets far better. Higher horsepower pumps and high jet counts don’t necessarily equate to the best massage experience. It’s easy to punch a lot of holes in a hot tub shell and put more jets in the tub than you’ll ever need. (That’s not necessarily smart to avoid cracks in the shell or leaks over time, either.) Truly, we’ve had some customers try out other brands of tubs and complain that there were so many jets it blew them right out of the seats! Your body craves targeted massage that will relieve key pain points and areas where stress lives in our bodies. Good therapeutic jets like the patented Moto-Massage found in Hot Spring’s Highlife Collection is legendary for its ability to sweep up and down your back, massaging it entirely. Those two jets take the place of eight or ten stationary jets in the same area of the tub—and boy, does it do a far more therapeutic job! (I have three herniated discs in my back—I know!) You’ll often find anywhere from five to eight different types of jets in a Hot Spring Spa. You’ll not only have jets that target different areas, they will also feel different and really increase your overall enjoyment and well-being. Take a moment to watch this quick video from one our customers on what a big difference her Hot Spring Spa has made in her life.
Buy from a company that will be there for you. Sounds logical, right? Yet many hot tub shoppers don’t even find out if the company they’re buying the tub from has the ability to take care of them after the tub is delivered. Do they have their own service department that provides your warranty service? Do they have a Valet Team that can help out with water care or perform cleaning services if you get too busy or need some TLC? Do they have an online store so you can continue to buy the right products to protect your investment and you in turn can support them as a local small business? Do they have home delivery services to make sure you have the key items you need for your hot tub and can get them shipped to your home right on schedule so you’re never stuck? If you ask questions like this and you get a deer-in-the-headlight stare or they blow them off as unimportant…you should re-think your buying decision.
Lastly, don’t overbuy! Bigger is not always necessarily better. We have plenty of customers that come back to us over the years to buy another tub from us based on the terrific experience they had with their first one. Yet, seldom do they buy a tub as big as the first one. Why? A lot of people will buy their first tub thinking it will get used with friends and end up with something that will seat 6-7 people. I’ve always told my customers to buy the tub for themselves first and everyone else second. When you own a hot tub, you tend to use it first thing in the morning or at the end of your day to help you get a good night’s sleep. That’s when no one else is around but you! Take a look at the way you live life and what the recent pandemic has done to shift your life experiences. Be sure to buy the tub that’s right for
Our buyer’s guide may have more tips to help lead you to the tub that’s right for you. If you’re in our area, we’d love to help you find the ideal tub!

OLYMPIC HOT TUB’S 4TH ANNUAL FOUNDER’S EVENT, OCTOBER 2020
October 4, 2020 – Our founders, Alice & Blair always had a place in their hearts for this issue of hunger.
We honor them with this fund raiser for 3 area food banks.
(Seattle, WA—October 1, 2020) Olympic Hot Tub kicks off its 4th Annual Founder’s Event by shining a light to help end hunger by supporting three regional food banks serving communities in the Puget Sound area. The event honors founders Alice Cunningham and Blair Osborn and their legacy of giving. This year Olympic Hot Tub selected these deserving beneficiaries: the Marysville Community Food Bank, the Rainier Valley Food Bank in Seattle, and Eloise’s Cooking Pot Food Bank in Tacoma. These institutions have been pushed to their limits by overwhelming community need during the pandemic. Past Founder’s Event recipients include Path with Art, and the GSBA Scholarship Fund.
“Alice & Blair, both brilliant businesspeople, were passionate about a number of worthwhile causes. They shared a concern about the ever-growing plight of hunger and homelessness in our region and they recognized the importance of giving back,” said Olympic Hot Tub President Don Riling.  “Hunger and homelessness often go hand-in-hand and go to the very core of our ability to have a foundation on which to build a happy, healthy existence.”
Olympic will donate a portion of each hot tub sale toward the Founder’s Event goal of $18,000 to benefit these food banks.
Olympic encourages community members to donate directly to their own local food bank or the three participating food banks. “Our company has always been focused on the health and wellness of our customers—one of the reasons we’ve adopted Better You…Better Life
Tumblr media
as Olympic’s mantra. We think that everyone, regardless of their situation in life, deserves the most basic needs to survive. Hunger is a serious issue in Puget Sound, especially these days, and we hope to do our small part to help eradicate it. We’re hopeful our customers will agree and make our fourth Founder’s Event a significant contributor to these worthy food banks working to end hunger,” said Riling.

Olympic works to help fight hunger in October
October 1 , 2020 – Anyone who knows me knows that fall is one of my favorite seasons. While I don’t love it getting darker earlier, I certainly embrace the changing of the leaves, the crisp morning air, and the smell after a good rain.
It’s also a signal the holidays are fast approaching, marking the time area food banks gear up to do what they can to fill the coffers and help out those in need. While it’s a year-round endeavor for them, the light tends to be shone brighter on the plight of hunger and homelessness as the temperatures get colder and the nights longer.
This year, our food banks have been pushed to the limit—really, pushed over the limit—in their efforts to provide everyone with the help they so urgently need. The pandemic has turned their job into an even more all-consuming challenge.
When I became owner of Olympic in 2016, I wanted to do something to honor Olympic’s founders, Blair Osborn & Alice Cunningham. I chose to have an annual Founder’s Event every October. Time flies, and this year has certainly blended days into months far faster than normal for me. Here we are at another October and another Founder’s Event! With the stress our food banks are experiencing, it felt only right that this year we should raise funds to help them out.
During the month of October, with every hot tub and Covana Automated Gazebo sold, Olympic will donate a portion of the sale for our 4th Annual Founder’s Event.  The funds will be distributed to three areas food banks: Seattle’s Rainer Valley Food Bank, Marysville Community Food Bank, and Eloise’s Cooking Pot in Tacoma.
If you or someone you know is ready to purchase a hot tub, I hope you’ll consider a purchase with Olympic. You can buy with confidence, knowing we’ve been the exclusive dealer of Hot Spring Spas since 1982. Hot Spring is the best-selling hot tub brand worldwide—you’d love owning one to enhance your overall health and well-being. Why not buy this month, and help us fight hunger in the Northwest?
Our mantra at Olympic is Better you. Better life. May October be the month you invest in a hot tub for a better you. That in turn will help us feed others to live a better life.
Our hope is to raise at least $18,000 to evenly divide up and donate to each food bank.
We’d also absolutely encourage you to donate directly to any of these three terrific organizations. I know they’d be so grateful for the extra support! I’m listing the links for direct donation below to make it easy for you.

Have a wonderful fall!

Perspectives on Pregnancy: Third Trimester
Third Trimester – Weeks 27 – 40
Before we get started I want to address something. It has been brought to my attention that not every birthing person identifies as, nor do they want to be called, mom. Mom is a title I have used quite a bit in my previous blog posts to address all persons carrying a baby. I’m grateful to this person informing me that my words might have been perceived as non-inclusive. It is my intention to always be inclusive and supportive of all people, birthing or not. If you are expecting and don’t identify as mom and my words made you feel left out of the conversation, I sincerely apologize. I will be much more thoughtful going forward. Please reach out to me directly if you would like to discuss this any further.
As a reminder…
My name is Dr. Jessi Gradin, I am one of the chiropractors at our Multnomah Village clinic and, four months ago (at age 35), I had my first baby. The journey of every expecting parent is different and I am not here to say my experience is “normal,” or “abnormal.” My hope in writing this blog is that you will find things that resonate with you. Use my experience and recommendations to have a more informed, confident and comfortable time navigating your unique pregnancy. If your pregnancy is at high risk please contact your OB prior to making any changes. If you haven’t already, please check out my other blog posts on the first trimester and second trimester of pregnancy.
YOU’RE ALMOST THERE!
These final months can be a little rough. Your growing body may present challenges with regard to how you feel and how you move. Good news is there are modifications for almost everything and if you can’t modify a particular exercise you can substitute something in its place. If you need help with coming up with modifications or substitutions please reach out to your chiropractor, they would love to help you!
Don’t be afraid to continue some form of your exercise routine as it continues to be beneficial for you and the baby to stay moving. According to a study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2016, “Moderate intensity aerobic exercise throughout pregnancy is known to result in lower caesarean delivery rates, lower incidence of gestational diabetes and hypertensive disorders, decreased maternal weight gain, and improvements in antenatal and postnatal depression, and has not been found to negatively affect birth weight.”  I would, however, encourage a mindset shift now. Try thinking about exercise during this trimester as movement for enjoyment and birth prep as opposed to gaining strength or endurance. One example of an exercise that you can perform now is the squat. To accomodate for your belly, you can try using a wider stance squat. Remember this is not about maximum weight but rather quality of movement. P.S. Squats are great for birth prep! Follow along with Craig!

Things for me really started changing around week 30; the baby really started popping and I was increasingly less comfortable with heavy lifting, bending and exercises that required much core stability. During these final months of pregnancy I relied heavily on my chiropractic and massage therapist co-workers to help me maintain maximum comfortability. You may not be aware but all massage tables here at Hosmer have removable cutouts for belly and breasts. This means that you can LAY FACE DOWN during massage! Yes, laying on your stomach for the first time in several months is as glorious as you imagine it might be. Make yourself a priority and do it! If you’ve never had a massage at Hosmer before it is possible that this service may be covered by insurance. Give the front desk at either location a call and they will find out your specific coverage.
Final Thoughts & Recommendations
Let’s talk about a few things that I had difficulty with during the third trimester, and ways to work around them.
Lunges and step ups: For me, just trying to put my socks on while standing required a concerted effort in core bracing for stabilization, and lunges were really uncomfortable. Try reducing the range of motion or just performing single leg stands as an option.
Shortness of breath: At some point in the third trimester your baby will “drop” until then it may feel like you can’t take a full deep breath. Include rest breaks between sets of exercises and if you feel dizzy or lightheaded take a pause and get a drink of water. Continue with your diaphragmatic breathing exercises they will help you through labor and during postpartum recovery.
Running/burpees/jumping: Towards the end of pregnancy I just eliminated all of these movements. You may or may not need to do so too. Here are a few ideas for ways to get your heart rate elevated without the added pressure of these more intense movements: spinning, walking up hill, rowing machine, squat and press, swimming.
Hip/low back/pelvis pain: As your baby grows in size and your ligaments relax in preparation for birth you will feel more pressure in these regions. This is where massage therapy and chiropractic care can be very helpful in reducing discomfort. Chiropractic care is safe and effective throughout pregnancy and can be a lifesaver during the later stages.
Fatigue: I get it, you’re feeling heavy, maybe your feet are swollen and you aren’t sleeping that great anymore. Your body is doing amazing things give yourself permission to rest. If you can sneak in a mid day 20 minute nap, those saved me!
Remember these recommendations are general and your best best is to come into the clinic for a full evaluation and individualized treatment. Chiropractic care and massage are a great addition to any pregnancy. We would love to help make your journey to parenthood as comfortable as possible.
Remember you are strong and resilient. The reward of your baby is just around the corner.

Fall is around the corner…is your hot tub ready?
September 8, 2020 – It’s Labor Day…! With all that’s been happening, it feels like we’re on an escalated timeline, doesn’t it?
Soon we’ll be experiencing cooler temps, crisp mornings, falling leaves…all the signs that fall is nearly here. Is your hot tub ready to take great care of you during the coming season? With hot tubbing being more important than ever, you’ll want to be sure your tub is ready to take care of you! That requires you taking care of it first. Here are some things to think about to get your hot tub set for the coming season.
How’s your hot tub cover? You want a cover in good shape to help keep things energy efficient. A cover that’s water logged can’t do its job, and it makes it far harder to remove when you’re ready to soak. Don’t be one of those that waits too long and allows the cover to cause damage to siding or a cover lifter! If you need a new cover, you need to order it soon. If your cover is okay for the coming season, be sure to clean the interior with baking soda, scrubbing the seams to eradicated mildew. Clean the top of the cover with mild dishwashing liquid. Then, condition the exterior vinyl with 303 Protectant.
Are your filters in good shape? I’m always stunned how long some wait until they replace hot tub filters. The filters are one of the hardest working components of your tub! If they are too old or too dirty, they can restrict flow to the heater and other components, preventing your tub from maintaining its set temperature. Filters should be cleaned monthly with a good filter cleaner. If you have one or two filters in your tub, they should be replaced about every two years. If you have more filters than two, they should be replaced every 2-3 years.
Fresh water is a must. Take the time now to give your tub a good drain and clean. A terrific product to use before draining your tub is Clean Start. We love this product! It’s designed to deep clean and sanitize your tub at the same time. It will reach the plumbing and parts inaccessible to you ensuring your tub is as clean as can be when you drain and refill with fresh water.
Do an inventory of your water care products. Do you have enough sanitizer? Shock? Balancing products? If you use a silver ion cartridge or @ease Mineral Purifier & SmartChlor cartridges, are you stocked? If you need anything and want to make it easy on yourself, check out our E-Store. We have everything you’ll need, and shipping is free on orders of $50 or more!
Is your ozone system working? If your tub has an ozone system, make sure it’s cleaned so you’re getting optimal ozone to your water. If it’s more than two years old, it’s a smart idea to test your ozone system. If you find it’s no longer operating, get a replacement ozone system
We’re enjoying quite the warm September in the Northwest over the next two weeks. It makes it the perfect time to get your tub some attention for fall. If you’re in our service area and want us to do the work for you, our Valet Team will come to the rescue. You can contact our Service Center for rates and scheduling.
Hot tubbing is essential to life at home these days! Make sure yours is ready to welcome you.
