I feel that! ph is definitely set in France, somewhere around the mid 1800s. And we know the men existed at some point, I just assume their dead. Which is what makes Sheryl lady of the house. I also believe Rainsworth is the husbands name. It usually is, as the wife traditionally takes up the husbands name. Seeing as he had to be a lord considering their nobility. I do believe they are relatives of the king hence their line to royal blood. But cousins, nothing too close. Jack choose them
Carefully because he had to speak with the king ( which tells us PH does have a king) to get his plans going. I agree with you they probably only married for political reasons but I think Sheryl did love her husband considering she never once engaged Rufus despite her husband being well out of the picture years later. I imagine Sheryl had to work hard to gain the respect she has ! A true queen tbh if anything they marry to keep the bloodline going
Tumblr media
Oohhhh! Then I totally need to research more into the mid-1800s and France. You’re right about the women taking their husband’s name, but that’s where my question lies: why Shelly has the same surname? Instead of her husband’s.
Sharon only changes her name post PH because she marries Reim (I really need to re-read PH ahh), but Shelly is not shown to be the same (taking her husband’s name and moving away). And I’m sure Sheryl loved and adored her husband as well! And she sure worked tirelessly to get the respect she has currently, especially with her training Sharon and telling her how she should be as the future duchess. We can see that through her behavior and her remaining the way she is: Sheryl shows that in the male-leading society, she has to be strong and cunning to make sure that Rainsworth's family survives. I also think that cousins are the closest thing they’re getting to the crown as well, they cannot be any closer judging by their history from what I know. I’m sure both Sheryl and Shelly loved their husbands a lot, because they don’t seem to have any bad words (well, nothing at all) to speak about their spouses. But it’s just weird how Sheryl still remained the leader, because we’re not given anything about their history with any men or any possible switching power to a man. It seems like Rainsworth family is a weird enigma among other dukedoms based on their leaders in terms of commanding/supervising.
It’s very complicated to me who’s been pretty far away from PH, so I greatly appreciate your input, Dia! It’s so much to discuss this and gives me a new thought to think. There is a looooot to be digged and discussed, but I really need to re-read everything so I can be on top of my game. xD

kiingsroar replied to your post: I was wondering why in early drafts Sharon...
I always looked at it from history? Like both Sheryl and shelly’s husband aren’t present. I always saw it as they married purely for political reasons, arranged marriages back then were very good for alliances. Wanting to have peace between houses or their alliance being beneficial for both. I feel like for the rainsworth they married wealthy and powerful men just for them to look the part of a dutiful woman. Because women back then, especially in France were not supposed to be in places of powe
Power.* the Nightrays have a tarnished reputation thanks to jack. I think their marriage would have brought a good light to the nightrays. Be aligned with a good family name like the rainsworths would prove beneficial for them.

I never thought it was taken part in France, but I’m re-reading manga to see this. Idk why, I always switch to British royalty because of the name Rainsworth, but then again, I’m re-reading manga so I’ll try to see how it goes. But from the point of history, you’re right. But then again, the Rainsworth men are never shown, so I always thought that they’re either sent away or killed or dead. I mean, we’ve never heard of even brothers of Shelly or Sheryl as well. It’s a mystery, so that’s why it was hard for me to look at it just from the historical point of view from the real world.
To me, it feels like Rainsworth women only marry for the alliance because they do not take the man’s name, bringing the man into ‘their’ family if you know what I mean. That’s the reason why I’ve been sitting here and thinking. Yeah, women are not usually seen to be in power or allowed to be in power, but then again, somehow Sheryl has been the leader for years and years. Shelly’s husband is also never seen or never been appointed as the head of Rainsworth dukedom. I’m honestly in a state of mind just to try and understand, but I have not much knowledge on some royalties in different countries.
And you’re right, Nightrays would have a better outcome from the marriage because of how their name has been tarnished, you’re right. But then again, Nightrays also do experiments with Abyss, so I think it was another reason why specifically Nightray family was chosen too. They already have Gilbert as an ally, so why not sink their teeth deeper into it? But once again, I’m probably looking too much just a draft, so I’ll just step back because I can think and wonder, but it never happened xD

I was wondering why in early drafts Sharon could’ve married Vincent, but then I remember that the Rainsworth is a matriarchy, so that means that the first or second sons probably would not be married to her simply because they’re the next dukes of their respectful house (first for sure but if the first son dies the second one must take it).
Plus, Vincent was adopted into the Nightray family, so if it’s a way for Rainsworths and Nightrays to keep a good relationship through marriage, Vincent would be the best choice. Gilbert is a no-go either because he has Raven, the Nightray’s chain. For an arranged marriage, Fred is too old and probably already married. Claude and Ernest were probably needed for another things in the dukedom and/or were not the best suitors (idk just thinking), and Elliot is just too young.
It’s just my thought process, nothing else. I just find the arranged marriage quite an interesting thing to discuss since the potential alone makes me question what was the reason behind such a draft.

I got 100% on my final portfolio for Creative Writing. I thought I failed it miserably, but nope. 97% for Creative writing. 94.5% for Ethics, and straight-A (98-99%?) for Advertising (no percentage there).  So far, I have 3 straight As for my classes. The last one is Spanish.  Y’all, I killed this semester even with online classes.
