Now that I have completed Z’aanta (cosplay), you will all see a vast improvement on how I interpret what he is wearing from here on out.
#except adding in the knot embroidery/trim#because I am not drawing that every time#edit: I did not make chausses but you wouldn’t be able to tell#I interpret that that way unless he was like… shirtless

First, OP if you are out there, I apologize for briefly derailing this experience of longing. Thank you for bearing with me. I do understand.
But, since my tags were tacked on, I did want to say I located the quote for anyone who might be stopping by. It was said by Kakunoshin Futsuzawa, the writer for the Octopath Traveler series, in an interview.

the insane experience of missing a fictional character . like you can always go back and reread the book , replay the game , rewatch the show or movie , you can always go back & see them , but you can never experience them & their story for the first time again . its absurd to miss them because they'll always be there , but you'll miss when there were still new things for them to say .
for a small time they were real & growing and changing and you hung onto every new word, but now all they can do is repeat the same story forever&ever & they're not real anymore because you know everything they're going to do. & you miss them. its fucked man...
#the problem with becoming friend with your blorbos is that#now the longing you feel for them is that of a friend#and not of some concept#which kinda makes the ‘missing them’ kinda worse ngl

All forebears of the royal lineage were rightfully buried in honor amongst the monarchs of the past, placed to rest alongside those of their blood. But, to the current king of Cornia, there was no one stronger suited or more deserving than the blood from the covenant that had been laid before him decades ago.

First, I apologize it's been awhile. I did intend to share my thoughts about these two as a Traveler pair overlap, but some things had gotten in the way offline/it slipped my memory until now.
If you're still willing to lend an ear, for me, H'aanit and Osvald can be broken down as similar in both character and respective story, so I'll split it into sections.
As Characters:
Unfortunately a lot of this section is vibes I don't know how to fully articulate, but here I go.
From what I remember, because it certainly has been a hot second since I have visited OT2 and a lot of H'aanit's banters, both H'aanit and Osvald are characters that are brief and blunt with their words and say things straightforwardly. With scarcity, aside from the muzzled portions, Osvald is kind of like Therion in this way, but from the understanding I got, it's not done to be secretive, but simply because he's a man of few words, which I feel is a H'aanit trait. I wish I could explain this better to be honest.
Aside from what I will get into with their stories, they're also kind of homebodies. It's not really until after something is externally agitated to set them into action while still being complacent or content with their home life before their journey begins. Other characters fall into this, like Ochette for instance, but this wasn't me trying to say only two can have the trait. There could be as many as wanted.
As an aside, I see Ochette aligning more with Ophilia and her story in this way, so Osvald gets H'aanit. Tbh, Ochette and Ophilia could probably get their own post.
A minute physical similarities between them are both are some kind of long-haired blond at least in the pixel sprites. What H'aanit's hair color is certainly is a topic, but her sprite is what is probably meant to be strawberry blonde (alternatively known as pink hair, if that makes everything make sense now), and Osvald is blonde-dirty blonde. It probably depends on the lighting tbh lol. Other physical characteristics I don't really have comments on besides "they certainly are close but is it enough? idk." Simply don't know enough for something so trivial.
This point is a very Your Milage May Vary because this is very much a me opinion thing, but to me, Osvald and H'aanit suggest juxtaposition to how they are depicted in their art. It's Osvald more so than H'aanit given he gets the text descriptions of "bear-like build" and whatever was going on in Partitio and his travel banter (you know the one), but for instance, when I look at the box art, he feels lanky and lean, not much mass as we are meant to believe. With H'aanit, I realistically know that it's my bias clouding reasonable judgement in why I am not satisfied, because she does have defined arms, but this post was always about my own personal opinions/view anyway and not necessarily hard variables. The real parallel is I want them both bigger/buffer. Alternatively they're triangle up-triangle down, Osvald with wide shoulders and H'aanit with wide hips, but I digress.
Their Stories:
The abridged version of this answer is both of their stories revolve around family as what gets them to act and take up their journey, their love for them, and (ultimately) to get them back.
In H'aanit's case, she sets off to retrieve her absent master, gone with no word for approximately 9 months (under the assumption of a 12 month calendar). Until then H'aanit is pretty stationary with her position in S'warkii, not really having traveled or hunted as exuberantly as her master (this could also be gone into with Osvald and his own studies to a degree). She's an apprentice hunter with no tales to tell of her own, and one of her story's point is that this his her growing into that position as a master and as her master specifically. H'aanit's story concludes on her acceptance of Z'aanta's position to her, and it's shown to us by her actively doing, jesting around with, something he does that made her eyes roll so far into her head in the past.
In Osvald's case, he shares similarities with Primrose, revenge over the death of blood-related family being a motivator, however in the middle of his story, something happens and shifts his story. He finds out that his daughter thought dead is still alive, and he is able to keep her safe, and the circumstances in which this happens also vastly resembles what happens in the middle of H'aanit's story and not present in Primrose's story.
H'aanit is vocally shaken (considering they are pixel people, the VA is doing a lot of work) seeing Z'aanta petrified, but with his help, knows that there is a chance that he can come back. It's similar with Osvald, but the opposite(?). He finds that his child is back from the dead after believing for approximately 5 years that she wasn't, and this is what spurs a shift in his perspective for continuing, and ultimately it's with Elena's help, his love for her, to which he reaches the One True Magic and achieves his goal.
Now, a lot of OT2 is rearranging pre-established archetypes and tropes from OT in a different combination to get its result. This is how a series establishes itself, and there are also plenty of other swaps that can be pointed out between the two, but the sake of this post is the similarities between H'aanit and Osvald, so those points were the overlaps. There might be more, but this is what I can actively recall.
It's also worth to note that I had played OT2 first, and therefore was exposed to all this that way first ("backwards"). Whether or not this ultimately affected my like of H'aanit to some degree, I'm not sure. There certainly is a lot going on in why I got invested into her and her story (I certainly took one look at Z'aanta and went "oh no. I'm in danger"), but familiarity is something.
Lmao. Hi. You and I had the same question because—if I am reading the table correctly—we together make the 2 H’aanit-Osvald votes. Wanted to see the off chance if the other voter had maybe commented in tags, and lo you did. It does seem like a weird combo, but I do think I have a solid understand with this overlap, for me at least lol.
Hi! I actually voted after the results came out, so the mysterious other voter is still out there somewhere. I do also wanna know who they are tho bcus hi we all have the same two fave travelers lol! I also wonder if anyone else voted them after the results came out, like I did, which would add to the count
Also hello you have amazing taste in travelers haha! If you know why they're your faves and would like to share I'd be interested to hear! For me, I find Osvald an intriguing and complex character which are the kinds of characters I love, and H'aanit I just think is awesome and cool lol. They were also both my protagonists, I chose H'aanit bcus I saw Linde on her splash art and was like "Kitty :D ", and I followed Octopath 2 news as it released so chose Osvald bcus of Study Foe. That's honestly the only connecting thread between them I've noticed on my end haha
#there might be more that I'm forgetting#but this is already a monster of a post#sorry#Octopath Traveler#Octopath Traveler 2#H'aanit#Osvald Vanstein#sorry for talking about H'aanit much more but for reasons her details are far fresher in my mind 😭

#Octopath Traveler#Octopath Traveler 2#Z'aanta#Kazan#Kaz'aanta is the only time I will give a pass for the “because Z'aanta lost a bet” punchline#because these two would use it for roleplay purposes#(that is not used in the fic but I WILL do it if angered)#(edit: actually scratch that. it kind of is. you just have to squint)

“Asexuality” is a sexual orientation describing little to no sexual attraction
“Ayyyyy, sexuality!” is a guy at a bar imitating Chandler from Friends while talking about sexuality
“Aye, sexuality,” is a pirate giving his kids ‘the talk’
