Facebook Denies Australia from News Access (Article)
"This is not just about Australia. They are worried about a global precedent. This is a classic monopoly move by a powerful company trying to dictate what society does when in a democratic society..." This is Marcus Storm's, the president of the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA), statement towards Facebook, who recently blocked Australia from acquiring news on the said platform.
Facebook's decision is in response to the legislation passed by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission; the goal of which is to drive mega media companies, such as Facebook and Google, to pay publishers for their news content.
According to William Easter, managing director of Facebook Australia, the enactment enables the government to screen press releases and decide "how much the party that already receives value from the free service gets paid." In light of this, Facebook has resolved to focus investments in news programs in other countries.
The news obstruction is heavily condemned by the Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morison, who indicated the countless essential health guidance and emergency pages that have shut down. Ironically, even Facebook's own page became caught in the crossfire.
The codification has long been in the making. It aims to target media giants, such as Facebook and Google, which often had little impetus in remitting news outlets. But with the increasing revenue amounting from digital advertising, questions arose on the role online platforms held to support publishers. Many publishers have vouched for a change, including News Corp, a news corporation which included sources from Australia, UK, and the USA.
Regarding these concerns, Facebook released a notice, stating the former arrangement as a beneficial one which enabled publishers to gain more subscriptions and increase revenue. As exemplified by the platform stating the generation of around 407 million Australian dollars for these presses, Facebook declared the system as a "value exchange" in favor of the publishers.
Beforehand, upon the news of the codification in writing, Facebook has expressed the now manifested consequences. Additionally, Google fought alongside the social network; threatening to terminate search services in Australia should the ratification occur.
Yet in contrast, upon passing, the two companies split ways. While Facebook stood true to their declaration, Google instead partnered with News Corp and formed a three-year agreement under which the technological giant will pay for the company's news content.
In addition, Google announced a $1 billion worth initiative: "News Showcase", which allowed publishers to curate and determine how their content is introduced on the platform. News Corp publications have agreed to partake in the program. The partnership will involve the development of a subscription service, ad revenue shares, and investments in media journalism. Although the terms of the deal are not fully released to the public, News Corp's press release assured it will receive "significant payments."
Overall, the two platforms are hopeful in their diverging paths. "I hope in the future, we can include news for people in Australia once again," Campbell Brown, Facebook's vice president of global news partnerships, announced.
Meanwhile, News Corp CEO, Robert Thomson, shared: "This has been a passionate cause for our company for well over a decade and I am gratified that the terms of trade are changing, not just for News Corp, but for every publisher. For many years, we were accused of tilting at tech windmills, but what was a solitary campaign, a quixotic quest, has become a movement, and both journalism and society will be enhanced."

Sweet Treat (Poem)
There are only so many things tantalizingly sweet, Like a lover's peck on the other's cheek, The savor of confections could never compare, To the blushing caress of a beloved's hair, Such relish could be bested by only two or three, Like loving whispers of sweet nothings, Or a honeyed parfait of intimacy, Yet there is a revel delightful, which couldn't be, Beaten by no treat, sweet, nor pastry: When day-by-day one is simply, By the side of their sweetheart - where they are meant to be.

Cebu Charter Day (Feature)
Happy 84th Charter Day of Cebu!
Nearly a century has flown by since the inauguration of Cebu into cityhood. With the initiative of Don Vicente Rama, Father of the Cebu City Charter, and the support of Councillor Gervacio Lavilles, the humble municipality’s identity transformed into a promising city. And indeed, they fulfilled that promise as the City of Cebu has become the second largest metropolitan city in the Philippines, flourished with bustling businesses and vibrant affairs.
Traditionally, the Charter Day commemoration is held through mass festivities. But with the pandemic present, celebrations have taken on a new arena – online. According to Mayor Edgardo Labella, a virtual recognition will be held to acknowledge excellent individuals who contributed to the city’s development.
Nonetheless, the party doesn’t stop there. In our own ways online, let us celebrate Cebu City’s growth in this year and hope towards greater strides in the next.
