People have a hard time letting go of their suffering. Out of a fear of the unknown, they prefer suffering that is familiar.

tianafck:
She was taken aback by the blunt huff that Adam responded with, not something that anyone else she knew would have dared to say, especially if she had shown up to their house with freshly made food, just for them. But truthfully the response wasn’t uncalled for, nor was it unwarranted, Tiana having invited herself in, regardless of how much had been in her hands. Pausing only slightly at the sarcastic comment and blunt response she received, Tiana remained unfazed, merely setting about her business unpacking the food she’d brought.
Too focused on her own work, she barely noticed Adam’s hesitation to pull down a bowl, the man having an internal conflict over whether to get one or two. Reorganizing her tupperware containers, she tried not to focus on the sting emanating from her back, only praying that she wouldn’t split a stitch. Humming to herself, the brunette nodded. “I wouldn’t say there’s that many, but there sure are a lot. I only know about five.” She barely glanced at the bowls, one sliding hesitantly onto the table after the first. Immediately she began to scoop rice into one, forming a nice base, using the bottom of the spoon she’d brought to curve the bottom. Turning to the gumbo in question, she carefully ladled some into the bowl, making sure to get a little bit of everything into the serving. Glancing up, her eyes met Adam’s, the bowl in her outstretched hand, giving it to the man. Opening her mouth to tell him to eat, she paused.
Fuck, he’d seen her wince. “I’m fine,” she lied, not wanting Adam to worry at all. Or whatever it was that he was going to do. “Now eat. You need the protein.” Tiana turned, not wanting Adam to see the truth hidden in her eyes, setting about to make him another bowl for later - something he could throw in the microwave or eat cold the next time he got hungry - only feeling the warm and wet trickle of blood from a popped stitch until it was too late, the bright red coloring the back of her dress.
In a instant just the lightest smell of blood overpowered all else in his mind. It stirred awake the angrier self that Adam fought to settle while having company over. Staring at the stain forming on her dress, Adam gave a snarl at it. By the form her blood made on the dress he made the deduction that there was stitching underneath, which would explain her earlier face of pain. Adam was only familiar with it all because of being stitched up by Curtis recently and breaking a few at his wounds in negligence.
“I said be truthful.” He growled out angrily. Right after a trespasser, the next thing Adam hated was a liar. Stepping closer to Tiana, the smell getting stronger, he took a deep breath to try to rationalize why’d she insist she were fine, after he asked. She wasn’t the lying type, not if she didn’t have to be. Adam was familiar with liars--the ones who did it for gain and power, and then the ones who did it to protect themselves. Tiana extended a large hand of kindness to everyone she met, including him. Those stitches couldn’t have been an accident on her own accord. “What happened?”

He came here for a moment to be alone, mostly away from all the eyes that followed him and the small box he’d been carrying. Not that he wasn’t used to having people stare at him like a ghost, but with an occasional chirping box drew more attention than he usually preferred. He tried to make having it as inconspicuous as he possibly could, but there was only so much he could do with it having a small already injured bird inside. But when the girl slipped by and made her place at the table, Adam was partially grateful that she’d beat him to it. Now he had a real reason to concur visiting the cafe was a bad idea to begin with and go home elsewhere. “That’s fine. You can have it. You look more comfortable there anyhow.”
Rita all but collapsed onto a seat at the only empty table in the cafe, resting her head on the table with a soft thud. Sensing that someone was standing in front of her, however, she glanced up to see who it was. ❝ This was the only free table, huh? Well, sharing is caring and all that. ❞

babesreyes:
She opened her mouth to respond, brow still marred by confusion, when the box in his hands chirped. That caught her off guard, to say the least. ❝ Bianca, a friend of hers, ❞ She managed nonetheless, pointedly eyeing his box despite his steadfast attempt at eye contact. Just because she could turn into one, too, didn’t mean she understood other birds, but it wasn’t as if she could turn a blind eye to him now. After all, if that were her in some box, no matter who was carrying it, well. ( Not that she ever shifted near enough to anyone for that mistake to be made, but she still felt a sense of something like… solidarity, almost. ) ❝ Your box just… chirped. ❞ Bianca pointed out, a little flatly. ❝ It did, didn’t it? ❞
“...” He couldn’t argue the obvious. Especially to a mutual acquaintance of someone he knew. Remaining quiet, he eyed her in an attempt to read what her potential reaction would be to a bird in a box. She didn’t seem afraid of him, or maybe just more concerned about his friend in the box. Sighing he nodded slowly. “It did. It’s a friend of mine I found near my place....hurt...... It would’ve died if I left it alone.”

The explanation was absolutely ridiculous. Adam looked at the girl as if she spoke an far off exotic language. “If it’s pouring, you didn’t hear how hard it was falling? On the rooftop? Look outside a damn window at least?” He gave a shake of his head, so appalled at the explanation. But she was soaked and she looked pitiful. Adam rolled his eyes. “Maybe. I could check the lost and found, but there’s not one there for you to use, you’re soaked.”
“I-I didn’t realize how hard the r-rain was coming down until I s-stepped outside. One second a-and I was drenched. D-do you have an umbrella?”

“I’ve been, fine. Better. Here. I guess.” He shrugged. Adam hated that question. People habitually asked how the other were doing just to be nice. No one really cared. “Oh, you’re going on your break. Bad time, sorry. I’ll just come back when your break is over. Or later. Another day.” Tapping on the counter once, taking a step back already in set mind to make his exit. The lunch hour usually had the most people, and he was already pushing his comfort level by coming back again at this hour.
{ @roarofadam }
It had been a few days since she’d last seen Adam, but now, clocking out for her lunch break, Tiana glanced up to see him at the counter. How funny, she’d just been thinking about him, wondering how he was doing - if he was feeling better, how the library was now that Curtis had hung up a bunch of signs that kept the Deputy out. Flashing him a grin, Tiana untied her apron and hung it up, slipping her notebook from the pocket to her handbag. “Hey there. What have you been up to? Can I get you something before I go on break?”
