Meet Sven Calf, Who Survived a Tragic Fire and Found a New Life at Farm Sanctuary
From the time they are born, life is an uphill battle for most farm animals — and that was definitely the case for new Farm Sanctuary resident Sven. In just his first few days of life, the little calf had already been separated from his mother, imperiled by a tragic fire, and nearly sent to be raised for meat before the actions of a caring mother and son saved his life and put him on an entirely new path — the path to sanctuary.
youtube
National Shelter Director Susie Coston introduces Sven in a video originally streamed live on Farm Sanctuary’s Facebook page.
Born into the dairy industry, Sven found himself in a system that had no use for him. But unlike the vast majority of male dairy-breed calves, Sven (whose name is Old Norse for “little warrior”) has a safe, happy life to look forward to — all thanks to a family who put compassion first.

#NotYourOrdinaryJob: Thanking Our Heroes
Story and photos by Justin R. Robbins, Outdoor Recreation Planner for the BLM King Range National Conservation Area
This past holiday season was like no other for me. For two weeks I was asked to serve as a Resource Advisor on the Thomas Fire in Southern California. While on the incident, the Thomas Fire became the largest fire in California history and it proved to be the toughest fire assignment of my career. Seeing and walking along mountain ridge after mountain ridge, once covered in green vegetation and now burned black gave me plenty to think about each day on the fireline. On the final night of my assignment, a chance encounter proved to be the biggest challenge of all and humbled me to my core.

National Fallen Firefighter Memorial 2017
BLM Nevada firefighters Jacob O’Malley and Will Hawkins were forever honored on the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Oct. 8 in Emmitsburg, Maryland. They tragically died in an engine rollover while returning from a fire patrol on July 10, 2016. Will and Jacob were among 95 fallen firefighters honored at this year’s memorial services.
The National Fallen Firefighter Memorial was constructed in 1981 and is a seven-foot stone monument. Plaques surround it with the names of those who have died in the line-of-duty the previous year. Every year a National Memorial service is held at the site. This year Will and Jacob’s names were placed on the monument. Their families and friends attended a candle light vigil, a visit to the Memorial’s Chapel and a final Service.
In addition to families of Will and Jacob, several BLM representatives from around the country also paid their respects.
For more photos of the memorial, visit BLM Nevada’s Flickr.
