Name: Boondog

Debut: Rhythm Heaven Megamix

Rhythm Heaven Megamix is the first game in the series with any semblance of a story mode! How is it conveyed? You basically encounter a bunch of funny guys who tell you to play rhythm games to ambiguously Help Them. It's not much, but it's fun! And like I said, there are funny guys. Boondog is my favorite! He's a dog who is also a bee, or a bee who is also a dog, or a bee-like dog, or a dog-like bee, or something like that, or maybe something else. They put a Normal/Bug type in Rhythm Heaven before Pokemon. And he's a great creature!

Boondog is, specifically, a Beehound, and from what he says, it sounds like Beehounds are indeed very dog-like insects. Finally, a cartoon bug character with a mammal nose and snout that has a REASON for it. Boondog reminds me of this bizarre mascot I remember seeing long ago. I think it was for an allergy medication, and it was a strange bee/dog hybrid. Please oh please tell me if you know about it!

When we first meet Boondog, he laments that he is having a bit of an identity crisis, which you might assume is to do with being a bee dog guy. But it's not! He is very confident in this aspect of his identity. The problem is that he just doesn't have enough Flow, and you play some games, and then he gets it back. Hooray! There is no character arc here whatsoever, but there sure are intriguing biological implications.

Fleas? I thought you established that you were an insect! Does this creature have fur or setae? Maybe he uses some kind of specialized flea comb that treats varroa mites. He lives to pollinate, and he LOVES honey, but he needs a ladder to reach tall flowers, so it doesn't seem like his wings can get him off the ground. When he gets tea at the cafe, he inundates it with honey, just like I do! Or like I did until I realized that doing so made the flavor of the tea itself kind of pointless, and started just drinking hot honey water instead. Not often! Do not worry about my sugar intake! (too much)

Boondog also says he has been stung by a bee, which I feel kind of implies he isn't quite a bee himself? He doesn't frame it as "another bee", just "a bee". This guy just says things, I guess. Fun but ultimately meaningless things. Like junk food dialogue. But with that said, I want to get into what I think is the real substantial stuff! One of them is something cute, in that he enjoys supporting dog-owned businesses, clearly feeling a kinship with dogs, regardless of how much of a dog he is himself.

My favorite Boondog line is one where he reveals that his mother scolds him for being wasteful with his money, to which he asserts "Someday I'll act more like a drone and less like a larva!". Of course I love this line. Implied dog larva! What's not to love? It does not matter what Boondog "truly" is, and frankly it's none of our business, but what matters is the delight he brings us. And also the fact that he inspired me to make this image.
