I love the use of the phrase 'some strange alchemy' as a descriptor for a process you don't understand.
'Through some strange alchemy(crochet) they turned a bundle of yarn into a stuffed giraffe'
'Through some strange alchemy(bad cooking) they turned a perfectly marinated steak into a charcoal briquet'
'Through some strange alchemy(good cooking) they turned a pile of slop into the fluffiest bread loaf I'd ever seen'
'Through some strange alchemy(bad reading comprehension) they took my polite statement and turned into a disgusting act against the poor'
and so on

something i have always found really weird is when english texts italicize words from other languages.
i remember reading a book as a kid and the author continually italicizing the word tamales

The most valuable thing I learned doing a Masters degree with depression, anxiety and ADHD was to change my “things I’m bad at” list to “things I can’t do on my own.” Stop thinking of them as things I could do if I tried hard enough, and accept that I can’t accomplish them by effort and willpower alone; they’re genuine neurocognitive deficits, and if I need to do the thing, then just like a blind person reading or a mobility impaired person going up a storey in a building, I need to find a different method.
I’m “bad at” working on long-term projects without an imminent deadline or someone breathing down my neck? Okay, let’s change that: I can’t work on long-term projects without an imminent deadline and someone breathing down my neck. So let’s create an imminent deadline and recruit neck-breathers. Find a sympathetic prof who will agree that 3 weeks before the due date they expect me to show them my preliminary notes and bibliography. Get a friend I trust to block off an hour to sit with me and keep asking, “Are you working on your project?” Write a blog post about my progress. Arrange to trade papers and proofread them with another student.
Accept your limitations and learn to leverage them, instead of buying the neurotypical fairytale that they’ll go away if you just try hard enough.

FOR THE LAST TIME
👏 APOSTASY is the rejection of a faith after having professed it;
👏 HERESY is selective belief in only some of the tenets of a faith one professes, or belief in tenets contrary to those of a faith one professes;
👏 BLASPHEMY is derogation of the honour due to God.

alas, it is "17th Century Tea Rooms"
(the place is Upton upon Severn in Worcestershire, and the tea rooms in question are a place called The Bell House)

Neurospicy was an ancient form of divination which involved slaughtering an animal and examining its brain. (Compare the similar practice of haruspicy, in which the liver/entrails were examined.) A practicioner of neurospicy was known as a neurospex.

Listen if the study of ancient humans doesn’t make you at least a little bit emotional idk what to say.
I started crying today at the museum because they had reconstructed the shoes of Otzi the iceman.
Tumblr media
Either he or someone he knew who cared about him made these shoes out of grass and bear skin and twine and he was wearing them when he died over five thousand years ago.
And a Czech researcher and his students did reconstructions of these shoes and wore them to the same place where he died to test them out and they were like yep! These shoes are really cozy and comfy and didn’t give us blisters while hiking!
Is that not just the coolest shit ever????

This arena got everything: birth records, baptismal records, records of death, my own birth, absolute birth, a shining place in the absolute darkness, a gold plated Shangri-la, day and night, paradise lost, Sodom, endless darkness. The Apocalypse.

honestly I'm excited to see if "of" for "have" sticks as a language change in these cases and does some weird things with modal verbs
I can’t get how some english speakers substitute ”have” with ” of” in some phrases. like I’m sorry, do you not understand the words in the language you speak?

this is a niche one but instead of "they would not fuckin say that" it's "they would not fucking use American sign language".
ASL is not the only sign language. two british characters in your fanfiction would not be using ASL. England in fact has its own kind of sign language, BSL, that forms a sign family with many other sign languages around the world.
ASL isn't even the original member of its sign family, it comes from french sign language. do you know sign languages aren't related to spoken languages? that's an important one! it's not a direct 1:1 with people speaking English around the world. people in other countries don't learn ASL just in case they run into an usamerican or Canadian (who do often use it)
i know the entire world is the USA or whatever and sign languages do sometimes borrow from ASL for signs they don't have, but please be aware that there are other sign languages and families in the world that are not in fact ASL.

its always very odd when you're listening to someone speak in a really confident, overwrought manner, jumping from topic to topic, sounding incredibly well-researched and convincing
and then they land on a topic you're actually knowledgeable about and you realise not only does this make no sense at all, but it's so completely indistinguishable from the style of previous segments that they must also be equally bullshit.
net zero information but with a side of having been manipulated
