(Although the COD would be IMO the heart failure due to the abnormal compression of the nerves on the throat by the pressed-on collar, not the compressed windpipe - the compressed windpipe would have evetually woken up the poor guy).
During the Victorian era, starched and rigid collars were popular fashion accessories. These collars were so stiff and snug that they posed a potential risk of suffocation for the wearer. In September 1888, a tragic incident occurred involving John Cruetzi, who was discovered deceased in his apartment. The coroner's assessment suggested that Cruetzi, possibly under the influence of alcohol, had fallen asleep on his couch. His head slumped forward onto his chest, and the unyielding collar he wore inadvertently compressed his windpipe. This interruption of blood circulation ultimately resulted in his untimely demise.
