"I'm glad you got help. But take your time. You can't rush recovery." He smiled gently at the man, and when they pulled into town, Ian parked in the carpark of the hotel Alan had pointed out. "Nice little place," he said, grabbing his bag from the backseat. "Like the calm before the storm."
They walked into reception, Ian sauntering as per usual, and smiled at the receptionist. "Two rooms please, singles if you've got them." Ian glanced around the main hall and spied the bar in the next room. He signalled to Alan that he'd found their next destination before turning back to the receptionist.
Ian sauntered along past the pit, glancing in to see if Alan was down there. His friend was no where in sight so he figured he must be in his trailer. He asked one of the students which trailer was Alan's, and was directed to one in the middle of the encampment. He whistled as he strolled through the dust, sunglasses shielding his eyes, and wondering if all black out here was a good idea. When he reached the trailer he gave out a little 'coooee' and knocked merrily on the door. When it opened, he grinned. "Don't ask, but I need an alibi."

They’d uncovered new fossils that morning, beautiful specimens that Alan was currently logging and documenting to send back to the university when he heard it. A semi-familiar voice calling out to him and his blood had run ice cold. No. It can’t be. It had been years since Alan had seen Ian Malcom. It had been years since Ian had basically saved Alan’s life during what was undoubtedly one of the darkest times of his life. He pushed off his stool, made his way to the door and opened it, staring down wide eyed at the man and mouth gaping for a moment before the man spoke and Alan was pulled from his shock right back to being annoyed.
Alan braced himself on the door and frowned, “An ALIBI?!!” He furrowed his brow and studied the man, “What the hell have you gotten yourself into, Ian?” He stepped to the side, gesturing for the man to enter his trailer, almost knowing that he was going to regret doing so and also knowing that he had absolutely no choice.

Ian listened silently, not interrupting the other man. Ellie had mentioned the name once, but had grown quiet and hadn't elaborated. Ian had wondered but he hadn't pushed; he could see there was a deep pain in her eyes. But hearing the explanation coming from Alan, he felt his heart shatter for his friend and he suddenly understood how he had fallen into such a deep pit of sorrow. And Ian became all the more convinced it was nothing short of a miracle that pulled him out. If anything like that had happened to Ian, if he'd lost one of his babies, he would never recover. Life would simply have ended. To be a father with no child, only the vague idea if what could've been, was something he wouldn't have been able to live with. He thought again about the letters in his pocket. He had planned to challenge Alan as to why he let Ellie go, and why he didn't just tell her. But he had his answer now. That wasn't to say he may not still try and convince the man the universe works in roundabout ways, but he'd have to do it with infinitely more tact than Ian usually afforded.
"She said the name once but stopped and....I didn't press." He sighed. "I'm so sorry. I can't imagine...." Keeping one hand on the steering wheel, he reached out with the other and squeezed Alan on the shoulder gently, offering comfort to his friend before removing it. "It's a helluva thing to keep to yourself. If you ever need to talk more about it.....I'm always there for my friends if they need me, anytime. I think sometimes you forget you can ask for help. Or just reach out and chat."
The town appeared on the horizon. Ian cleared his throat, determined to make Alan smile. "Now approaching the Town In The Middle of Nowhere. Sounds like the title to a bad horror movie. Next stop, food and drink. Then on to the bright lights of Vegas."

"I'll buy you one," he laughed along with her. "There are multiple reasons you may need one with Alan. Me being too much, finding a Dino in the backyard, a particularly thrilling evening in the, er, boudoir. A fine investment."
"If you guys want to kill me, I can't stop you."

He didn't take his eyes from the road but he didn't need to. He could hear the pain in his voice well enough that he didn't need to see it in his eyes. He remembered with painful clarity the state Alan had fallen into, the abyss he very nearly couldn't get out of. To this day, Ian was amazed that he managed to salvage Alan Grant at all. He nodded in acknowledgement, telling Alan silently that he understood.
He did understand. Ian had been where Alan had been. But where Ian had sought comfort elsewhere as a reprieve from the loneliness, Alan couldn't bring himself to do that. It was Ellie or no-one. Alan's question drew Ian's gaze from the road, though he checked it frequently as he answered. "Er....sometimes. Now and again. When I'm in the area, I swing by. Make sure she's ok. Much the same way I do with you." He waited a moment, staring at the road ahead before adding softly, carefully, "She asked me to keep an eye on you whenever I could. She wants you happy."
Ian sauntered along past the pit, glancing in to see if Alan was down there. His friend was no where in sight so he figured he must be in his trailer. "Aye, Aye, Captain," Ian responded to Alan's directions, intending to be at this town and settled before the evening. It was still early in the afternoon but this way they could hit the bar and just chat, grab some food and catch-up. And Ian could ask about the letters he had secreted away in his pocket. He felt strange sitting next to the man knowing those papers were so close, like he was smuggling contraband. But he figured that if he broached the subject tonight, Alan would at least still be in the state, just 50 miles from the dig, and could probably get a lift back from someone if he wanted to abandon Ian in anger. He didn't think it would happen, he hoped it wouldn't, but he had to make sure he wasn't trapping an angry Alan in Nevada.
A few miles went by as the road flew past them. Ian was taking the road leisurely, enjoying the comfortable silence as he glanced at Alan to see him relaxing at the view. He couldn't help but smirk at the his comment though. "Yes Alan, it is. But that hadn't been the intention. If you'd like me to set you up though, I can certainly do that. But not in Vegas, you'll end up accidentally married, and so might I, and then she really will kill me. Sarah has some nice friends, I could work some magic for you. They do....y'know....dinosaur things," he said haltingly, trying to find the words.

Ian nodded his head in acknowledgement at Alan's gesture and watched the man go back into his trailer. Ian bit his lip, waiting with bated breath to see if Alan would discover the missing letters. He wanted to get Alan on the road before he realised he had them, else he might decide not to come at all.
But when he left the trailer and walked over to Ian with almost a smile, he knew he was in the clear. Ian grinned and climbed into the car, waiting for Alan to throw his stuff in the back and get comfortably buckled next to him. "Well I was thinking about grabbing a nice motel for the night, get the holiday to Greece sorted. Hotels, flights, stuff like that. Should only take a few hours. Take a photo in the bar, get my evidence. The we can have the weekend to ourselves. Just you, me and the wide road. Hell, maybe we can hit up Vegas, get you on the slots. Win you some funding for this place." He turned the key in the engine and pulled away, tires crunching over the dirt as he aimed for the road. "Know anywhere good to stay? Any nice little towns close by?"
Ian sauntered along past the pit, glancing in to see if Alan was down there. His friend was no where in sight so he figured he must be in his trailer. Ian grinned his signature grin when Alan suggested the road trip and had to stop himself from dancing around the trailer in joy. "See, this is gonna be just what you need. Something a bit different, a change of scenery, a change of pace." He stood and watched as his friend grabbed his bags, and nodded understandingly at his need to go and inform the dig leads. His smile softened into something gentler at the suggestion of Greece. He could hear the pain in Alan's voice and noted it, but didn't say anything. He could hear and see that Alan was trying to hide it, so he didn't mention it. That wouldn't be fair. And for all his bravado, Ian genuinely cared about the people he loved. He nodded gratefully. "Greece it is." He nodded as Alan walked from the trailer and left him alone in there.
As he waited for Alan, Ian took a meander around the trailer, careful not to disturb the other man's work. He looked at the notes pinned to the various corkboards, scanning Alan's handwriting and sketches. He peered at the numerous fossils and the labels next to them, forever impressed by the way paleontologists could decipher one bone from the next. As he scanned the shelves and units, taking note of the various tools of the trade, his eye caught something on a cabinet. He cocked his head slightly as he made his way over to the photo of Alan and Ellie, something that must have been taken before he met them judging by their carefree expressions. His eyes dropped sadly as he remembered the hurt Alan had been through, the turmoil Ian had helped pull him out of. He never wanted to see him in that situation again. His eyes caught a slightly open drawer right next to the photo and he opened it, gasping softly when he saw that it contained several letters addressed to Ellie, unsealed and unsent. He picked them up carefully, scanning them one by one, each more painful and desperate than the last.
He sighed and shook, but made up his mind he needed to talk to the man. He was going to spiral sooner rather than later. And Ian would be there again if it happened. He'd be there in a heartbeat, hesitating not a moment to run to Alan's side if he needed help again. But he'd rather try and prevent it first. He glanced behind him, quickly listening for the telltale footsteps of Alan returning. He heard nothing so he quickly took the letters and put them in his inside coat pocket, closing the drawer afterwards. He made his way outside, quickly grabbing the biscuits for the road. He saw Alan in the near distance talking to a few people, so he leant against his car to wait, whistling to himself softly.

"After this many years together, most of those in the blissful bond of matrimony, and two beautiful girls together, you'd certainly hope I love her." He watched as the other man went to the fridge and accepted the bear gratefully with a nod and a smile. "Sarah's special. When everyone else thought I was crazy, she sought me out. She's been through what we've been through. She's one of extremely few people in the world who I can talk to, who understands. She was on Sorna." His face dropped slightly as he cast his eyes to the table, staring at the assortment of fossils accumulated there. He spoke softly, something in his voice haunted by memories. "She has the same nightmares...."
He cleared his throat and refocused his eyes with a smile at Alan. "Honestly, past sending a selfie to her of me on your dig with you smiling or not smiling beside me - your choice - I hadn't really thought about it. Any suggestions for romantic vacations would be welcome. I'm struggling between Paris and Rome. Maybe somewhere in Greece." He took a swig of the beer, appreciating the cold in this heat. "A place to stay for the weekend would be appreciated," he added with a quirk of his eyebrow. "Or we could go on a roadtrip, taking photos here and there. A boys weekend away would definitely stop her paranoia." He laughed, only half serious in the suggestion. "No, but seriously, a couch for a couple of nights, somewhere to plug my laptop in so I can book hotels and flights, and a friend to share a beer with," he raised his beer as he said that, "is more than enough if you're willing."
Ian sauntered along past the pit, glancing in to see if Alan was down there. His friend was no where in sight so he figured he must be in his trailer. Ian nodded in quick succession as Alan spoke. "I know, I know, I know, and I'm a firm believer in practising what you preach." He spied an open packet of biscuits on the table and helped himself, taking a quick bite. "But sometimes there are things you can't communicate; I have my reasons with Sarah just as you, I imagine, had your reasons with Ellie. I note that our dear Dr Sattler is married elsewhere, and you are here in this, uh, lovely dig, so clearly my communication advice didn't go....well, quite to plan. But I digress...."
He looked softly at the man, and cocked his head to the side gently, smiling softly at his friend. "Do you really think I'd cheat on the best woman I've ever been lucky enough to find? Actually, no, don't answer that, I'm not sure I want to know. But no, I'm absolutely not." He finished the biscuit in one go, before continuing. "It's our anniversary soon. I've taken off for the weekend so I can plan something nice and impressive, big, romantic and, above all, surprising for her. There's very little doubt she'd figure me out if I tried it at home, and then whoosh! Surprise gone. And I thought, 'hey, two birds one stone. I'll go see Alan, get proof I'm not with another woman, and plan our anniversary all in one weekend.' Though actually that's three birds isn't it?" He picked up the pack of biscuits, offering Alan's own food to him.

It would have been, uh, yeah when Hammond wanted me to see him, when he told me about Site B. The kids were there, her and Tim. She would've been, what? Sixteen? Hard to believe she's all grown up."
"Yeah, I heard through the grapevine that you were looking into it, it's why I got in touch with you. But I didn't know that it was Lex that put you onto it. Team Nublar strikes again," he said with a laugh. "Taking down corrupt dinosaur corporations one at a time."
