something i think about every single day is how dean, i don’t think, has ever fully understood and conceptualized cas as an angel. even late series, every time cas does something Angel-y as small as healing him, he’s kind of. he pauses. like he’s suddenly remembering. and this is because his entire perception of cas is like….that’s Cas. That’s my nerdy dorky little dude best friend cas. and he starts doing this IMMEDIATELY, like a few eps into season 4 when sam is so revered to meet an angel, dean is already at the “eh, that’s cas” level. which is also why he reacts so strongly when sam referrs to jimmy novak, the vessel, as “it”, because??? how DARE he??? that’s not a vessel it’s just…..cas. and i don’t think it’s because he doesn’t respect cas as an angel or thinks lowly of him, i think it’s because dean winchester, faithless man with negative self esteem, simply cannot begin to comprehend cas in all that he is caring about him. at a basic level. this is a holy being who has given up everything, multiple times, specifically and explicity for dean himself and i think if he actually really looked at that and thought about it for what it is…………he just simply can’t do that
