folks, not to be aunty no fun allowed, but i thought i remembered reading some stuff abt kabul back when the taliban took over, and i just briefly looked it up to check if what i remembered held up.

kabul is... a city. it is the capital of afghanistan. it has over 7 million inhabitants. i daresay most of them are probably just non-extremist muslims trying to go about their day despite the taliban being there. kabul has parks, museums, malls, mosques, hotels, embassies, schools, roads, cars, public transport, an airport, several sports arenas (for some reason cricket???) etc. it's a place subject to violent unrest according to tripadvisor (lol), but it's not a shelled-out wasteland. also it's not in the desert! they can get pretty cold winters, apparently!

Listening to the Danny Elfman one from the first and thinking "it's not as bombastic as the later ones it's subtle but still classic" does it have a hint of oak to it too??

Interestingly watching all 8 mission impossible movies in the span of 4 days hasn't made me want to write fanfiction as much as i expected and has instead manifested in my comparing the opening themes across each movie and talking about them like a sommelier

I watched the final reckoning now I'm gonna share my thoughts in no particular order, spoilers abound

I can't believe they cut the forehead touch. I cannot believe it

This was in every promo and has been posted so many times by official accounts for promo why was it taken out?? Absolutely sick.. I saw a spoiler saying it had been taken out but I didnt want to believe it but god..

I guess on the bright side we now can all just decide it's whatever we want it to be, my guess is it was probably something to do with them talking about Luther.

I will say, I did expect Luther to die but it didnt make it feel better, what a gut-punch, his speech at the end had me emotional.

Funny enough, I didnt exactly "predict" the rabbits foot being the entity, but during my mi:3 rewatch a few days ago I did have a moment of "hm yknow what would be so crazy" before seeing the rabbits foot was labeled as a biohazard. There was something about Benji's speech about the anti-god where after mi:3 it did feel like, okay so that's it? That big speech and we don't know what that was? So even though it felt a little corny for that to tie in, I actually liked it.

Overall, I did enjoy the movie. I liked it more than Dead Reckoning, but it might be tied with Fallout, maybe just slightly ahead because i liked the big sequences a lot.

After it all, i still feel like Lane and the Syndicate was one of the more compelling villains of the series and even though i get they had to move on eventually it would've been interesting if they'd just added that some of the Syndicate had joined up with the entity.

I liked Gabriel as a villain more in this, his goals were clearer than in dead reckoning, but I still wish we knew a bit more about what was going on there. I think leaving it vague was an interesting choice, but i think it ended up being Too Vague.

Meanwhile, what wasn't vague was every single possible callback. We don't get any of Ethan's backstory, we only get flashbacks of the conversation with ethan, benji, and luther about the rabbits foot, no forehead touch, but every callback requires at least three clips from past movies. Maybe it's because I literally just watched all of them in the past four days, but after a point it felt ridiculous and redundant. Of course we also got time for whatever was going on with Grace, who now unfortunately seems to be their attempt at an Ilsa replacement instead of an actually fleshed out character. The dynamic in dead reckoning felt like such a clear mentor/mentee vibe, and then all of a sudden they're all cuddly and touchy. (Not that I think being touchy is inherently romantic, but it gets to a point).

The action was cool, i didnt even mind how much I had to suspend my disbelief for the submarine parts (he would not have been able to survive that swim, let alone open that submarine door, but whatever). The sound design in the submarine sequence was incredible, I hope they get nominations for that if nothing else. Although I fully expected Ethan to die, I was so relieved to see him survive, I think killing him would've been interesting and would've had its own value, but when they showed the parachute I nearly cheered.

But the editing I think was the biggest flaw. Too many flashbacks, some things I know needed it, but it felt like we were seeing the same scenes over and over again just to hammer the point home. But im not a fan of movies in general that assume the audience isn't picking things up, but I get they have to do that at the same time.

Also, some of the scene transitions were pretty baffling, what was with the parts with the slide-wipes and all that. I felt like I was watching a star wars prequel, there was one moment that felt exactly like this

It's tricky, it's not my top out of all the movies, but some of the sequences - the submarine one in particular - were so entrancing that it really pushed the movie up a level.
