i actually think its very awesome that after 1000 years joe and nicky display, on the surface, characteristics that of a deep friendship rather than grand overtures of romance. that they shove each other like schoolboys to get to the coolest car. they're silly! they find whimsy within the deadly, as a partners in combat and in heart. to add to that, a dynamic that feels grounded in the troubles of a mortal relationship -- secret keeping and petty jabs with sidelong glares to accompany them -- shows how these old fucks don't have complete couple telepathy, or that their interiority hasn't blended into one. that they are firm in their individuality, still finding friction and growth after a millennium. it makes their perennial union/love that much stronger. it makes them endlessly more dynamic and displays a kind of push and pull with material consequences, rather than some softened, tacit behavioral delta that fanon likes to imagine. joenicky old guard2 you are beloved 2me.

not to tarnish my own post or anything but man. I was 22 working in a food service job surrounded by women when I wrote this and now I'm 24 surrounded by men in a semi-corporate job and it's like 22 year old me knew what she was bound for. stripped of all context and wealth and everything, shiv was a character I knew would resonate with me forever. every day I hate being a girl -- in my job -- but smear it on myself like medical lotion. I begrudgingly go into work knowing I am accepted by men. her character meant so much to me and it still does. I love you Shiv Roy

Not in the boring ass competitive sorority girl way though. i mean like . Girls who are keenly aware of their womanhood but feel a gaping void between themselves and other women. Girls who present as Women but only just enough to properly navigate as a sleeper variable around Men. Girls who have, in an effort to sever themselves from that identity, forced themselves to view other women the same way men do and are paying the Infernal Eternal Internal Consequences for it. Girls who want to be men but don’t want to sacrifice the currency of femininity to do so. Girls who hate their moms not in a ladybird way but in a The Absence of Your Motherhood Left Me Without Something I Didn’t Know I Was Missing Until I Began To Live In This World As A Woman way. Girls who begrudgingly acknowledge that they must be loved by men. yellowjackets had Natalie scartorccio and truly didnt know what to do with all that. adult mistynat was the most compelling dynamic in that timeline and they squandered it! nat in the wilderness as a reticent authority figure was so interesting in theory and so far they have still squandered that! I often have to check myself with "is it bad writing or are you unhappy with the outcome" but idk man! you had a beautiful character and crumpled her like she was nothing!
