*deep sigh* kyle shut the fuck up challenge. god if i as a creator start acting like that, i hope that somebody calls me on my shit because it ain’t ok. legit. he could have just said, sorry the pandemic has been very stressful so writing has been tough, we may or may not be continuing the show, sorry that you feel that way about the last episodes. that’s it that’s all he had to say. hell he didn’t even have to reply to it! christ all mighty- also i also work and have school and have personal duties but like, i’ve still had time to write?? obviously it hasn’t been consistent but like, taking time for hobbies isn’t unreasonable? especially when that hobby effects income of you and others?? idk, it just seems like a bullshit excuse to treat his fans like shit...🌲

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: my issue is not with the writers taking a hiatus because of coronavirus, and if that is anyone’s issue, I think maybe that indicates a misunderstanding of one’s own priorities. I get frustrated when I see people say “well I’m able to work and create at the same time so why can’t they?”. that’s not a fair argument to take. this global health crisis is an unprecedented event in the lives of most people on earth, and it’s important to understand that it has impacted different people differently. asking those kinds of questions 1. gives writers and diehard fans of the creators an excuse not to focus on relevant criticisms being raised, and 2. misses the point of why kyle’s behavior was shitty in the first place. 

my issue specifically is that kyle is misrepresenting the person’s argument, and he does so by claiming that they have issue with the fact that the show is on hiatus, which is flatly not the case. they don’t even mention the hiatus in their original post. while I understand that the op of the reddit thread had also apparently voiced their opinions about the writers (but they edited them out, so I can’t speak to their content), it’s not really an excuse for kyle to not address any of the relevant criticisms op brought up. I mean, if he wasn’t planning on addressing them in the first place, he could have just not commented. instead he chose to behave like a child, and that really disappoints me. 

finally, and I think most importantly, if (by kyle’s own argument) writers and artists don’t owe anything to the people that consume their content, then the same is true in reverse. fans don’t owe the creators of their show blind adoration, and they are allowed (and should be encouraged) to think critically about the content they’re consuming.

I won’t speculate on the reasons behind his thin skin when it comes to king falls am, but I do think that the following built up around the writers is an interesting case study regarding how fandom spaces can become one-sided and toxic

what bothers me about that thread is not that kyle was so reactionary, willfully ignorant to the actual criticisms in the comment, and unnecessarily mean to some stranger on the internet, but specifically the sheer number of fans of the show jumping to his defense at a moment’s notice
