“there’s a homeless person sleeping at my usual table and i don’t fancy myself waking him up to chat.” a hand gently gestures to the seat she’d already pulled out. “you don’t mind do you? you’d be doing me a huuuuge favor.” violet grins big, and pleading in a way she knows usually annoys people more than it makes them feel sympathetic to her.

A shrug lifts Rory’s shoulder and her half-smile remains, “I don’t mind the company, just learned to not expect it,” calm your daddy issues there, Rory, “Honestly, I wouldn’t wake Frank either. He gets cranky when his nap is interrupted, but if I leave an egg roll by him for him to wake up to he’s usually pretty chill.”

.。   ♡         eating at the food court – well,       celeste wouldn’t really label it as a treat but it was most certainly a break from her norm. and like the high school dining hall of years past – the options of where to sit overwhelmed her almost immediately.  not a spare table in sight,    she readied herself for at least  some  kind of ridicule for intruding. 

    “    i guess you can owe the pleasure to the hands of fate – ?    “ words awkwardly stumbled from lips, set against the metal screech of the chair on tiled floor as she pulled it back,    “    taking lunch during lunch hour … who would have guessed how busy it is today –   “

“And people say malls are dying,” Rory offered as she looked up to Celeste, her head tilting; she didn’t mind the company, no matter how much her tone often made it seem as if she might, and she beamed a small smile at the other woman, “The thing about malls is they’re only dying in places where there are other options for congregation, and we’re lucky enough to live in purgatory so...”

emi hates eating lunch alone so she’ll go to great lengths to avoid it. as soon as she spots rory, she makes a beeline for her table and sits down. “just thought i’d give you some company,” she shrugs casually as if she was the one doing rory a favour. “what did you get? that looks so good,” emi eyes rory’s plate before glancing back at her sandwich wrap. “is it bad that i get this so often that the worker knows my order by heart?” 

Rory could have been crunty about it, but she was a good person deep down to she shrugged and snorted, “I don’t mind the company, just didn’t expect any given my overall look...” after a moment, she pushes an egg roll across the table, “They usually have my order ready for me by the time I get here... depending on the day it changes up, but the egg rolls are always fresh. And... you know, sharing is caring.”

          ― ⁂ having left class hungry as fuck, eric hurried to the food court knowing he wouldn’t have much time until his shift started. already expecting it to find the place packed, ( it was lunchtime ), he bought his favorite from a chinese place and tried to find a free table to sit on. not suceeding, he recognized rory sitting down and approached her with a timid smile– he hated to bother but he doubted he could eat that standing up. “ hi. ” he said a bit shy. “ i was wondering if you were expecting someone? i’m sorry to bother– there’s not a lot of room. is it okay if i eat with you? ”

Rory was many things -- and sometimes that did include bitch -- but it didn’t extend to people who were just lost and trying to find their way. At the heart of it, she was a good person, she just kept to herself for various reasons and tended to have rbf in the worst way, “Sit, sit. I didn’t mean to make it seem like it wasn’t allowed. I’m probably wearing my resting bitch face right now, eh?” 

She shifted to a small smile and nodded across from her, “I don’t bite.”

if there were any awkward social cues which might have prevented echo from realizing her presence was not required here, they’d long since gone straight over her head. setting down her hard plastic tray that contained an overly large slice of greasy pizza bigger than her own head with a loud plunk, she took a seat opposed from rory.  “didn’t think you’d enjoy your lunch as much without your favorite co-worker.” an obnoxious grin follows suit, which is then replaced by a large mouthful of pizza. 

There were few people who could actually break through the nigh-zombie like state that Rory’s work at Hot Topic usually put her in -- she personified the early 2000s employee to a tee on most days -- but Echo was always able to smash right through. Rory’s eyes crossed and her tongue stuck out for a moment, before she snorted, “I needed to get my daily MSG before I head back into the lion’s den. I swear when they put these buy one get one free sale in people go nuts.”

“Well we can’t have that, now can we?” he teased. “So how’s work treating you? Now that middle schoolers are skipping their emo phase, I don’t know what kind of crowd you usually get anymore.”

“They’ve stocked all-new sections with what they call ‘kawaii’ merchandise. There’s a ton of shit from Asian bands as well that people tend to go all-in on. K-Pop, in particular, is huge and it’s funny to watch it happen?” Rory offers with a shake of her head, biting into one of her egg rolls with a surprising crunch, “What about you? Do kids still try to sneak into movies above their paygrade with tickets that don’t make sense?”

Sure there was a perfectly good table a few feet away that only a few crumbs and a moderately suspicious stain on the surface he could have sat at, but he figured it might be a bit sad to eat by himself, especially when a familiar face right there. So he settled himself into the seat across from her offering her his signature cheesy grin. “Well I only get twenty minutes so I figured I might as well spend it with a view.” He played, picking up a fry from his tray and popping it into his mouth.

Her eyes rolled first, then she grinned at him and shook her head. Things might have ended, but it didn’t mean her attachment to him had; they were friends, and they’d likely die that way while giving each other what the old folks call ‘bedroom eyes’ across the table from one another -- no matter how feigned it might be from one or the other, “I mean there are likely better and less traversed views around, but pickings are a little slim right now, eh?”

“Thought you could use the company,” he replied with a shrug. “But, no, I won’t leave if you ask me too,” he teased, putting his bag down next to hers. 

“Color me surprised,” Rory offered with a cheeky smile but no actual surprise in her tone and she slowly pushed one of her food-court level egg-rolls across the table towards him, before pressing her heel onto the edge of his bag as well in case anyone tried to juke it, “Company’s always useful, otherwise I get all pensive and brooding.”

lunchtime had come not soon enough and rory slid into the battered seat at one of the most wobbly tables in the food court -- a plate of broccoli beef in front of her -- and set her bag by her foot on the floor. a heavy heeled boot rest against its strap daring anyone to try something, and she tucked in slowly. 

after a moment, the chair across from her scraped against the tile floor and she, with a mouthful of food and a hand over it to be polite, offered, “Didn’t think anyone would join me today, to what do I owe the pleasure?” before glancing up and giving a half-smile.
