Taylor Swift is giving fans more insight into her new album âThe Tortured Poets Department,â thanks to a track-by-track experience with Amazon Music.
Fans can now listen to the album â which shattered streaming records after its release on April 19 â along with commentary from Swift breaking down the meaning of each track. To listen to âThe Tortured Poets Departmentâ with Swiftâs commentary, fans can simply say to Alexa, âIâm a member of âThe Tortured Poets Department.'â
Through the experience, Swift has revealed the inspiration behind songs including âFortnightâ with Post Malone, âClara Bow,â âFlorida!!!â with Florence + the Machine, âWhoâs Afraid of Little Old Me?â and âMy Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys.â
ââFortnightâ is a song that exhibits a lot of the common themes that run throughout this album. One of which being fatalism â longing, pining away, lost dreams,â Swift said of the albumâs opening song. âI think that itâs a very fatalistic album in that there are lots of very dramatic lines about life or death. âI love you, itâs ruining my life.â These are very hyperbolic, dramatic things to say. Itâs that kind of album.â
Of âClara Bow,â named after the silent film actress, Swift said the track is âa commentary on what Iâve seen in the industry that Iâve been in over time.â
âI used to sit in record labels trying to get a record deal when I was a little kid. And theyâd say, âyou know, you remind us ofâ and then theyâd name an artist, and then theyâd kind of say something disparaging about her, âbut youâre this, youâre so much better in this way or that way.â And thatâs how we teach women to see themselves, as like you could be the new replacement for this woman whoâs done something great before you,â she said. âI picked women who have done great things in the past and have been these architypes of greatness in the entertainment industry. Clara Bow was the first âit girl.â Stevie Nicks is an icon and an incredible example for anyone who wants to write songs and make music.â
âFlorida!!!â featuring Florence + the Machine is one of the rare songs on the album that doesnât see Swift directly speaking of a former lover. Swift said the inspiration for this track actually came from âalways watching âDateline.'â
âPeople have these crimes that they commit; where do they immediately skip town and go to? They go to Florida,â the singer added. âThey try to reinvent themselves, have a new identity, blend in. I think when you go through a heartbreak, thereâs a part of you that thinks, âI want a new name. I want a new life. I donât want anyone to know where Iâve been or know me at all.â And so that was the jumping off point. Where would you go to reinvent yourself and blend in? Florida!â
As for âWhoâs Afraid of Little Old Me,â Swift revealed that she wrote the tune âalone, sitting at the piano in one of those moments when I felt bitter about just all the things we do to our artists as a society and as a culture.â
âThereâs a lot about this particular concept on âThe Tortured Poets Department,'â she added. âWhat do we do to our writers, and our artists, and our creatives? We put them through hell. We watch what they create, then we judge it. We love to watch artists in pain, often to the point where I think sometimes as a society we provoke that pain and we just watch what happens.â
Lastly, Swift broke down the metaphor within âMy Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys.â
The song is about âbeing somebodyâs favorite toy until they break you and then donât want to play with you anymore,â she said. âWhich is how a lot of us are in relationships where we are so valued by a person in the beginning, and then all of the sudden, they break us or they devalue us in their mind. Weâre still clinging on to âNo no, no. You shouldâve seen them the first time they saw me. Theyâll come back to that. Theyâll get back to that.ââ

For me, the award is the work. All I want to do is keep being able to do this. I love it so much. It makes me so happy. It makes me unbelievably blown away that it makes some people happy who voted for this award too. All I want to do is keep doing this. So thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to do what I love so much. Mind-blown. Thank you so much!

So some good news.
The WFP is actually reaching Ghazzawis for food distribution and has even helped Ghazzan bakeries in Deir Al Balah and Rafah reopen by providing flour, yeast, water, etc... according to Palestinian journalist Hind Khoudary (this was on her story the other day so I can't link it).
The PCRF is also active in Ghazzah, providing medicine and even food to Ghazzawis in shelters.
Today, I ask each one of you to donate at least one dollar to both of these organisations, and more if you can spare it.
