Rosa sat against the far wall of town next to the stairs that lead to the deep reflection pool above. She idly twisted strands of grass between her fingers as she listened to how the waterfall carelessly spilled into the river beside her, a gentle mist spraying against her face.

It was a strangely quiet day in town, everyone went about their daily business with an haze of mundanity hanging above them. There was no gossip that floated in the air, no festivities to prepare for, and no calls to alarm that might put the townsfolk into a stir.

All around, the day could be described as peaceful, if she were not so exhausted from having tea with her mother this afternoon. The tea was not quite right and the how-do-you-dos felt somewhat forced. It was hard to tell if there was something playing on Joanna's mind or if Rosa was the one who was rather out of it.

Perhaps the latter was true... Rosa felt the tiredness in her shoulders, could hear the water bubbling in a pitch that seemed not quite right. She closed her eyes, hoping the gentle breeze that kissed her skin and tingled in an unusually uncomfortable way would allow her to relax for just a moment before she needed to head back to the palace.

If I post this WIP, maybe I’ll be inclined to finish it!

I’m not sure why, but about a year ago I was thinking about medieval/renaissance monarchies and how they related to the structures of power in Final Fantasy IV. So I looked up images of Queen Elizabeth I to get some ideas of how female monarchs were presented in paintings and I had the idea to draw Rosa in a similar fashion. Why did I choose the painting of Circe to model her pose off of? I’m not sure. But I think I was onto something with the symbolism of Rosa mimicking both Circe and her connections to Ancient Greek witchcraft and Queen Elizabeth I/ Christian monarchies.
